Safety
For your protection, observe the following safety precautions when setting up the equipment.
Follow all cautions and instructions marked on the equipment.
Ensure that the voltage and frequency of the power source match the voltage and frequency
inscribed on the equipment’s electrical rating label.
Never push objects of any kind through openings in the equipment. Dangerous voltages may
be present.
Do not make mechanical or electrical modifications to the equipment. Rorke Data is not
responsible for the safety or regulatory compliance of a modified Rorke product.
Do not block or cover the openings of the Rorke Data product. Never place a Rorke Data
product near a radiator or heat register. Failure to follow these guidelines can cause
overheating and affect the reliability of the Rorke Data product.
For products with multiple power cords, all power cords must be disconnected to completely
remove power from the system.
Do not operate Rorke Data products without the covers in place. Failure to take this
precaution might result in personal injury and system damage.
The motherboard contains a coin-cell battery (CR2032) that powers the real-time clock and
CMOS memory. When the computer is not plugged into a wall socket, the battery has an
estimated life of three years. When the computer is plugged in, the standby current from the
power supply extends the life of the battery. The clock is accurate to ± 13 minutes/year at
25 ºC with 3.3 VSB applied.
CAUTION
Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced with an incorrect type. Batteries should be
recycled where possible. Disposal of used batteries must be in accordance with local
environmental regulations.
CAUTION: If the DICOM Appliance is connected directly to a piece of Medical Equipment it should be
connected to a common ground or provision for an equipotential ground connection should be provided
as part of the installation. The equipotential connection should be installed in accordance with the
facilities specifications and all local codes for equipotential connections of medical equipment.”

Congratulations on the purchase of a DICOM Appliance. This guide
discusses how to unpack, setup and use the DICOM Appliance and its
management tools.
About the DICOM Appliance
The DICOM Appliance provides a mirrored hard disk architecture and an integrated
Panasonic ADA (Advanced Disc for Archive) Drive, bringing a high level of reliability for your
DICOM archives. The DICOM Appliance provides integration with modalities and PACS
solutions using DICOM 3.0 standards.
The DICOM Appliance has an easy-to-use web-based management interface, allowing
administrators to manage the system from almost anywhere, at any time. It is easy to
setup. Simply follow these step-by-step instructions and the organization will soon be
archiving its DICOM images.
The DICOM Appliance provides reliable multi-modality centralized storage with fast and
consistent access to patient data and images virtually from anywhere.
Overview
The DICOM Appliance is a fully integrated DICOM Storage and DICOM Application Server,
compatible with any DICOM modality and DICOM 3.0 viewing workstations.
The DICOM Appliance provides PACS services such as storage provider and query retrieval
provider. Both of these services run as Linux daemons and utilize the DBMS system and file
indexers for managing the medical images and reports.
A typical network consists of a central DICOM Appliance which stores a database containing
images from one or multiple modalities and from which multiple clients can retrieve and
display these images using medical imaging software. The images are stored in DICOM
format. The modalities (MRI, CT, PET, Ultrasounds ...) send the images to the Appliance by
using a DICOM "push" (DICOM C-Store). The server and the client workstations
communicate by using the DICOM protocol (DICOM C-Store or Query & Retrieve). The
clients display the images by using medical imaging software such as a DICOM viewer or a
radiology review workstation client software system.
