Cornwell Tools MSM100K is a cooling system pressure tester that is designed to help you test the cooling systems of various vehicles. It comes with radiator adaptors that allow it to test the most commonly found radiator necks in the industry. The tester is easy to use and can be attached to the filler neck of the radiator or service tank. It features a pressure gauge that indicates the pressure in the cooling system. The tester can be used to test for leaks, check the pressure cap, and detect compression or combustion leakage into the cooling system.

Cornwell Tools MSM100K is a cooling system pressure tester that is designed to help you test the cooling systems of various vehicles. IMPORTANT
With proper care, this test instrument should provide
the user with years of service. The pressure gauge
itself is a delicate instrument. Do not drop or treat
the unit roughly, as this WILL damage the gauge. The
pump should be oiled regularly. Add 3-4 drops of light
oil through the vent hole near the knob.
COOLING SYSTEM TESTING
The MSM-100K Cooling System Tester includes radiator adaptors (see
figure 2) that will allow the unit to test the most commonly found
radiator necks in the industry today. (Adaptors for other radiator necks
are available through your
CORNWELL TOOLS
Distributor.)
WARNING: Wear appropriate eye protection when servicing a cooling
system. Do not perform cooling system maintenance operations when
the engine is HOT. Coolant temperature in the radiator of a pressurized
cooling system can be much higher than the boiling point of the solu-
tion at atmospheric pressure. Removing the radiator cap while the sys-
tem is hot may cause the coolant to boil instantly, spewing coolant over
the engine, fenders, and persons nearby.
1. With the radiator cool, carefully remove the pressure cap
from the radiator or service tank.
2. Check coolant level. Fill, if necessary, to recommended level
in radiator.
3. Clean the inside of the filler neck, inspecting the sealing
seats to be certain they are in good condition.
4. Check the overflow tube for dents or internal obstruction.
Pressure released by the pressure cap during vehicle operation
must pass through this tube. This tube must be cleared to
avoid excessive pressure build up that may cause the radiator
or some portions of the cooling system to burst.
5. Apply water to the rubber gasket of the tester head and
attach to the filler neck.

NOTE: When testing a radiator where an adaptor is required, first apply
water/coolant to the rubber gasket of the adaptor. It is usually easier
to attach the adaptor to the radiator first, then attach the pump to
the adaptor.
To attach the tester head of the pump to the filler neck (or adaptor), keep
the locking ears in line with the entrance notches of the filler neck (or
adaptor). Press down slightly and rotate the tester head lever clockwise
until the lever climbs up onto (see position in figure 3)
and rides completely over the ramp cams (see position in figure 4) so
that the tester head is fully engaged and sealed. Little force is required
for this installation.

To test radiators with 1” deep filler necks, insert 1/4” thick Rubber
Spacer Washer (Part MSM-10006-see parts breakdown) prior to con-
necting the tester head to assure proper sealing.
IMPORTANT: This tester is not designed to release pressure below
30psi. DO NOT allow the pressure to build up past the arrow indicating
the maximum for each system.
6. Once the tester head is attached to the radiator/adaptor,
operate the pump until the gauge indicator hand reaches
the proper colored arrow just beyond the end of each color
band (see figure 5.)
Check manufacturer specifications to determine the proper pressure
cap for each system. The following chart indicates radiator cap pressure
ranges. NEVER TEST A SYSTEM BEYOND THE MAXIMUM PRESSURE
INDICATED ON THIS CHART. (See following page)

INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS
A. Gauge Indicator Hand Holds Steady:
If the gauge indicator hand does not drop over a period
of several minutes there are no serious leaks in the system.
Still, examine all joints for seepage or slight leakage using
a flashlight.
B. Gauge Indicator Hand Drops Slowly:
A small leak is likely present. First check radiator, hoses,
gaskets, and heater. Tiny leaks in the radiator core can be
stopped with a good quality stop leak. After repairing leaks,
re-test system for leaks. If hoses swell during testing,
replace them.
C. Gauge Indicator Hand Drops Quickly:
A large leak is present. If the large leak is from the radiator
is should be repaired by a qualified radiator repair person.
D. Gauge Indicator Hand Drops But There is No Visible Leakage:
An interior leak is likely present. Replace radiator cap and
run engine. Check motor oil dipstick and transmission fluid
dipstick for evidence of coolant.

NOTE: Compression or combustion leakage in to the cooling system
can be detected using this procedure:
1. Carefully remove radiator cap when engine is cool
and install pump on filler neck.
2. Let engine idle until system reaches operating temp-
erature. If GAUGE INDICATES RAPID PRESSURE
BUILDUP - TURN OFF ENGINE IMMEDIATELY!
Release remaining pressure by carefully rotating
tester head lever clockwise, then removing tester.
DO NOT ALLOW PRESSURE TO EXCEED SYSTEM
MAXIMUM. A fast pressure rise of this nature
indicates a blown gasket. Replace head gasket.
If GAUGE indicates NO rapid pressure buildup,
use pump to build pressure to the system maximum.
If the gauge indicator hand vibrates, this indicates
a compression or combustion leak into the cooling
system.
7. Once testing is complete, release pressure in the cooling system
by turning the tester head lever clockwise until it moves partially
up the ramp cams. With pressure released, rotate lever counter-
clockwise to remove.
TESTING PRESSURE CAPS
The MSM-100K Cooling System Tester requires the use of radiator cap
adaptors (not included) in order to test radiator caps. These adaptors
are available from your
CORNWELL TOOLS
distributor. Select the appro-
priate radiator cap adaptor for the radiator cap to be tested.
1. Carefully remove pressure cap from the radiator when the
system is COOL. Remove pressure cap slowly, releasing any
remaining pressure.
2. Check cap and verify it is the correct pressure range for
the system.
3. Make sure that all parts of the cap, tester, and adaptor are
clean. Check the locking ears of the tester head assembly.
Do not re-adjust them - replace tester head assembly if
necessary.

4. Apply water to rubber gasket of pressure cap and install on
the radiator cap adaptor (not included). Apply water to rubber
gasket of pump and install on the other end of the radiator
cap adaptor. (See 5. under COOLING SYSTEM TESTING).
5. Hold tester with radiator cap adaptor hanging down. (Note: some
pressure caps have a free or loose relief valve and will not seal
unless tested in this inverted position).
6. Operate the pump, watching the pressure gauge. Check the
pressure level at which the cap starts relieving pressure and
compare with Radiator Cap Pressure Ranges Chart. The cap
must not open (leak) below the low limit, but must open at
or below the high limit side of its range. If it fails to do so it
must be replaced (Note: A cap is satisfactory if it holds the
proper test range for minute or more. If the gauge indicator
hand falls quickly, replace the cap).

AMSM-10032 can
be "forced" threaded
