Product Description
3M
Stain Resistant Additive SRC-220 is an aqueous
fluorinated polyurethane dispersion (PUD) that, when
formulated as a penetrating sealer, adds both stain resistance
and stain release, as well as water and oil repellency
characteristics to porous surfaces. The SRC-220 concentrate
can be used as a stand-alone product or can be incorporated
as an additive into many general coating formulations, and to
various construction materials. This product is suitable for both
indoor and outdoor use.
Benets
Provides stain-resistance and easy cleaning of surfaces
such as concrete, marble, ceramic tile, wood and other
hard surfaces
Provides both oil and water resistance to stains such as
motor oil, transmission uid, antifreeze, coee, wine,
mustard, ketchup, etc.
3M laboratory testing indicates most stains can be easily
removed up to 24 hours after spill with mild cleaning
solutions, e.g., soap/water, and with minimal eort
The images at right show the performance of 3M stain
resistant coating SRC-220 on treated and non-treated
surfaces.
Figure 1 is an image of redwood and pine wood samples.
The set on the left is untreated and the set on the right is
treated with a prototype formulation containing the
SRC-220 material.
Figure 2 shows a concrete sample. The left side is untreated
and the right side is treated using the same prototype
formula containing SRC-220 as used on the wood samples
in Figure 1.

This picture was taken after the stains remained on the wood
surface for 24 hours prior to being wiped with a wet paper towel.

To obtain optimum performance from 3M
Stain Resistant
Additive SRC-220, some solvent may be required in the
formulation.* The purpose of the solvent is to act as a
coalescent or lm-forming agent. This helps the product
form a uniform protective lm over the substrate.
VOC (volatile organic compound) regulations may inuence
the amount of solvent used in SRC-220 formulations.
Because SRC-220 is a concentrate in water, it is not
compatible with hydrocarbon type solvents (e.g., hexane,
heptane, mineral spirits, etc.).
*Note: When using solvents, be sure to read and follow the
manufacturer’s precautions and directions for use.
SRC-220 Initial Prototype Formula
Suggestions
* Dipropylene Glycol mono-Methyl Ether or Dipropylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether
Objective: Prepare a 100g sample of SRC-220 in water/DPM
at 4% active solids.
Procedure: Weigh out 8.7g of DPM (or DMM) into a glass
or plastic container. While mixing, add SRC-220 concentrate
followed by DI water. Mix until uniform (10-15 minutes).
The final mixture should be slightly opaque to clear.
* Dipropylene Glycol mono-Methyl Ether or Dipropylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether
Objective: Prepare a 100g sample of SRC-220 at 2% active
solids.
Procedure: Weigh out 7.3g of DPM (or DMM) and 79.4g
of IPA into a glass or plastic container. While mixing, add the
SRC-220 concentrate. Mix until uniform (10-15 minutes).
The final mixture should be a clear solution.
Objective: Prepare a 100g sample of SRC-220 added to
existing coating at 1% active solids.
Procedure: Weigh out 93.3g of paint/sealer/varnish into a
glass or plastic container. While mixing, add the SRC-220
concentrate. Mix until uniform. Significant mixing may be
required if the original viscosity is high (20-30 minutes).
Final color will depend on the original coating.

* Dipropylene Glycol mono-Methyl Ether or Dipropylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether
Objective: Prepare a 100g sample of SRC-220 (4.5 % solids)
with acrylic resin.
Procedure: Weigh out 3g of DPM (or DMM) into a glass
or plastic container. While mixing, add the SRC-220
concentrate followed by Rhoplex CS-4000 (10g) and
DI water. Once homogeneous, add biocide and/or
UV stabilizer. Mix until uniform (10-15 minutes).
The final mixture should be chalky white.
