Quick Set-up Guide 8020 &
8040 Magnetic Arc Controls
The Cycloma c™ 8020 and 8040 Magne c Arc Controls can be somewhat
confusing for those unfamiliar with the system. This guide will help with
ini al setup and will get you up and running in no me.
Dip Switch Se ngs
Stabilize / Oscillate DIP Switch
For ini al con gura on of the controls, set the S1 DIP Switch se ngs to the Open posi on for stabilize
mode (STAB). See Figure 23 in the 8020 manual, Figure 18 in the 8040 manual (for purposes of these
instruc ons, se ngs are opposite from the gure se ngs).
Posi on DIP Switch
S2 DIP Switch (Channel 1): Set Switch 1 Open and Switch 2 closed. S3 DIP switch (Channel 2): Set
Switch 1 Open and Switch Closed. This is the default con gura on as shown in the manual, see Figure
29 in 8020, Figure 24 in 8040.
Inhibit DIP Switch
Posi on 1 of S4, the Inhibit DIP Switch, should be Closed. Posi on 2 should be Open. This is the default
con gura on as shown in the manual, Figure 20 in 8020, Figure 15 in 8040.
Taper DIP Switch
Posi on 1 of S5, the Taper DIP Switch: Set in Closed positon. Posi on 2 of S5: Set in Open posi on. This
is the default con gura on as shown in the manual, Figure 22 in 8020, Figure 17 in 8040.
Front Panel Controls
Adjust the following front panel controls to the values listed:
Sweep: 000 Posi on: 500 Le Dwell: 000
Amplitude: 000 Taper: 000 Right Dwell: 000
Remote Interface Cable
Disconnect the remote interface cable from the control to prevent the inputs from interfering with the con-
trol’s func ons.
Turn on the Magne c Arc Control Unit
Turn on the control unit. The power lamp will light and the LED’s may ash a few mes.

Strike an Arc
Strike an arc and allow it to stabilize. At this point, the operator will not see any signi cant change in the arc
ac on, but we do have control of the arc with the magne c eld.
Posi on Adjustment
With the arc established, adjust the Posi on control to posi on the arc directly below the Torch (tungsten).
This adjustment o sets the posi on of the arc and makes up for the probe mechanical moun ng errors.
Make a note of the Posi on Dial Reading. This is your Centered posi on. See Figure 16 in 8020, Figures 10,
11, 12 in 8040.
Oscilla on Mode
Turn the Control O brie y to change the mode from Stabilize to Oscillate. Set the S1 DIP Switch se ngs to
the Closed posi on (OSC). Apply power to the control and strike an arc once again. See Figure 23 in 8020,
gure 18 in 8040.
Amplitude
Slowly increase the Amplitude adjustment(s) above 000 and you will begin to no ce the arc oscillate. Once
the desired arc oscilla on width is reached, make a note of the Amplitude value.
Le & Right Dwell
Once amplitude is adjusted, slowly increase the Dwell adjustments to begin contouring the weld bead to
your desired shape. Increasing the Dwell values adds me to the Dwell func ons.
Sweep
The Sweep adjustment also performs bead contouring. Increasing the Sweep values increases the transi on
me between the Le and Right Dwell.
Taper
Taper is used during the downslope of amperage. As amperage decreases during downslope, the arc be-
comes easier for the Magne c Arc Control (Mag Arc) to move. To keep the Mag Arc on at the same ampli-
tude levels, the arc will be blown out by the Mag Arc before the nal amperage is reached. Taper reduces
the Amplitude level over me to match the downslope of amperage and the downslope me. The end
result feathers the bead out at the end. The Taper func on requires the use of the Remote Interface cable,
providing an input trigger signal to begin the Taper func on.
Conclusion
The Mag Arc systems are very versa le and easy to operate once set up. This guide gets you up and running
fast so that you can begin to realize the bene t of the Magne c Arc Control system. You should now begin
to step through the func ons and ne tune the system to achieve your goals.
