1. Preliminary remarks
This innovative XPS-80/90 is designed to print addresses, text
and graphical elements onto individual or mass-dispatch mailed
items in professional applications requiring high throughput.
To ensure the safe and reliable operation of this
printer and its components for many years, you must
read and observe this installation and operating guide,
including the notes on safety, before installing it and
putting it into operation. Be sure to observe all warning
and information labels attached to the printer.
All persons assigned to operate the XPS-80/90 must also be fa-
miliarized with this installation and operating guide.

How to use this manual
All general and explanatory information is given in continuous
text. This information is needed in order to carry out the following
installation and operating steps.
Whenever the installer or operator has to perform a specific ac-
tion, it is always marked in the text with bullets, as follows:
Carry out an action now
Then perform the next action
Always be sure to read the manual as far as the action texts. You
will then obtain all the information you need without second-
guessing the manual. This will protect you from making any mis-
takes!
Chronology and reference
The manual has a chronological structure, i.e. it describes the se-
quence from delivery/unpacking to the ready-to-use condition.
This is followed by the operating and programming instructions
and finally the technical information.
If you are unfamiliar with the equipment, you are best advised to
read the manual through in sequence. You will be guided in a
step-by-step approach and will soon be able to operate the printer
easily and quickly.
If you are already familiar with the XPS-80/90, however, you will
find it just as easy to use the manual as a reference resource.
Key terms and abbreviations
To operate the XPS-80/90, you must be familiar with a small
number of terms and abbreviations:
- Cartridge (Crt.) = C, C1, C2, C3
- Unit = U, U1, U2
This combines all three cartridges in a single unit.
- Paper width = Extension of the paper in the direction of trans-
port. Left to right as viewed from the operator
side.
- Paper height = Extension of the paper transversally to the di-
rection of transport. Top to bottom as viewed
from the operator side.

2. Safety
The XPS-80/90 has been constructed in line with state-of-the-art
technology and is safe to operate. However, hazards cannot be
excluded if persons unfamiliar with its use operate it. The same
applies if it is used in an inappropriate way or in a manner not in
accordance with its intended purpose.
If you ignore the information given in this manual, the follow-
ing hazards cannot be excluded:
Electric shock,
Injury by the rotating items,
Damage to the printer.
2.1 General notes on safety
The XPS-80/90 may only be connected to a voltage source of
100-120VAC/60Hz or 220-240VAC/50Hz. It is vital to check
the information on the type-plate before connecting it, to ver-
ify that the correct fuses (type and rating) are installed for
your voltage source.
The power plug must be connected to a grounded socket!
Make sure that the grounding has not been rendered ineffec-
tive by the use of an extension cable with no ground conduc-
tor. Any break in the ground conductor inside or
outside the printer is dangerous and must be cor-
rected.
Both AC terminals of the printer are fused! Even if a fuse
blows, electrical parts in the printer may continue to be live.
Run the power lines so that no one can trip over
them. Make sure that no objects are placed onto
the power cables.
Unplug the printer from the wall outlet (voltage
source) if it is not being used for a longer period of
time. This avoids any damage in the event of volt-
age surges.

User Guide 2-2
Never touch the print units while the printer is run-
ning! There is a danger of bruising and crushing in-
jury. Also be sure to keep long hair or any items of
clothing away from the printer while it is running.
Protect the printer from moisture.
Always unplug the printer before cleaning it.
Do not use any cleaning agents. Use a damp cloth.
You must unplug the printer and have it checked by
an authorized service technician in the following cir-
cumstances:
If the power cable or power plug has worn or been
damaged.
If water or another liquid has penetrated the printer.
If the printer does not operate properly even after the
operating instructions have been followed.
If one of the printer parts or its housing is damaged.
If the printer shows marked discrepancies from nor-
mal operation.
Do not dismantle the printer beyond the level described in this
manual. Unauthorized persons must not open the housing.
Only authorized service personnel may carry out repairs.
Prohibition of conversions: all conversions or modifications
carried out by unauthorized persons are prohibited for rea-
sons of safety.
2.2 Handling the print cartridges
Keep all print cartridges out of the reach of children.
Under normal circumstances, ink cannot run out of a car-
tridge. Wash off any ink spray, which gets onto the skin im-
mediately under running water. If any ink gets into your eyes,
rinse it out immediately with plenty of water and subsequently
consult a doctor.
Print cartridges must not be shaken, as ink may run out.
Install each print cartridge immediately after removing the
protective tab. Be sure not to exceed the expiry date.
RENA XPS-80/90
User Guide 2-3
Do not attempt to open or re-fill an ink cartridge. Any such ac-
tion may damage the cartridge and may cause the cartridge
to leak ink into the printer, causing damage to the printer.
2.3 Placement of the XPS-80/90
The surface on which the XPS-80/90 is placed must be hori-
zontal and sufficiently stable to bear its weight. The printer is
set up on four pan legs, which can compensate uneven sur-
faces within certain limits.
Select a placement location, which protects all parts of the
printer from extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations,
direct sunlight and excessive heat.
The XPS-80/90 must not be exposed to vibrations or shocks.
Place the XPS-80/90 so that you can switch off the power
plug easily at any time.
Leave enough room behind the printer so that access to the
interfaces is assured.
Ensure that sufficient stand area is available for the feeder
(when a feeder is used).

3.3 Final assembly
Normally the XPS-80/90 is operated in conjunction with the op-
tional AF635 (automatic synchronized feeder). Before being put
into operation, they must be mechanically and electrically con-
nected.
Note: If you are not using the AF635 feeder with the XPS-80/90
printer, you may skip Section 3.3.2.
3.3..1 INSTALLING THE XPS-80/90
When installing the XPS-80/90, make sure that there is suffi-
cient room behind it to allow access to the interface ports and
terminals.
Ensure that the printer is switched off. Ensure that the voltage
source is within printer power limits. Then plug the power ca-
ble into the wall socket (power source) and into the power in-
put module on the right-hand side of the printer.

3.3..2 CONNECTING THE AF635 FEEDER TO THE XPS-80/90
The AF635 is placed on a stand to ensure that it feeds the
print media at the right height.
Position the AF635 so that the ejection roller is on the same
side as the positioning fingers of the stand, See diagram be-
low.
Run the two connectors of the AF635 through the hole in the
top of the stand and place the AF635 onto the stand so that
the four alignment pins fit neatly into the holes of the AF635.

and AF635.
The XPS-80/90 and AF635 are now correctly aligned and con-
nected.
For further information on the operation of the AF635, consult
the AF635 User Guide.
3.3..3 CONNECTING TO THE PC
The XPS-80/90 may be connected to any IBM-compatible PC
via the Centronics parallel or the RS232 serial interface on its
rear panel. Ensure beforehand that both devices are switched
off. Do not connect or disconnect the interface cable during
operation, as this can lead to the destruction of electronic
parts. The printer should be powered on before the computer
is powered on.

see Section 4.5 for details)
To properly discharge electrostatic energy, be sure the
ground strap, supplied with the XPS80/90, has been
properly connected between the printer and feeder. If
the ground strap is not connected, a potential voltage
difference may build up, which can effect operation and
or cause damage to the electronics.

3.3..4 POSITIONING THE PRINT MEDIA
Normally the AF635 is aligned so it feeds the print media cen-
tered to the transport system at position “A” (shown below).
RENA XPS-80/90
User Guide 3-8
When using narrow media, if the print media covers fewer
than three suction slits, the AF635 can be offset to position B
(as shown below). This reduces the risks of raised media cor-
ners causing paper jams. To do this, the stand of the AF635 is
shifted to its forward position, i.e. inserted into the two forward
slits. The diagram below shows the AF635 in the forward posi-
tion “B” with a narrow envelope. The print media is now fed
centered on the second belt.
RENA XPS-80/90
User Guide 3-9
The decal shows the media formats that should to be fed cen-
trally to the second belt (Position B). P= printer F= feeder.
When the AF635 is attached at position B, this
change must also be adjusted via the printer or
FlexMail offset. Otherwise the position of the printed
image will not match the print position you have
selected via the software. When moving the AF635
from position A to position B, the previously set value
must be increased by 42.5mm.
If the print media is less than 70mm in height (note: the XPS-
80/90 is not specified for this low value!), then feed it centrally
to the transport band under Pos A.
RENA XPS-80/90
User Guide 3-10
3.3..5 MEASURING THE PAPER OFFSET VALUE
The correct offset value can be read off the ruler, located on
the safety flap.
Feed a piece of print media from the feeder, by pressing PAP
momentarily, so it is positioned under the safety flap. Then
read off the back value of the print media edge. The following
diagram shows a C5 envelope fed at Pos A.
A value of 9.8cm (98 mm) can be read off the ruler
Use this value as the offset in FlexMail.
RENA XPS-80/90
User Guide 3-11
The following diagram shows a #10 envelope that was fed at
position B and runs centrally to the second belt. The value on
the ruler is 16.8 cm (168 mm).
Use this value as the offset in FlexMail.
