1. Introduction

This Deployment Guide will guide the installer through the process of installing, configuring, and adding a

SmartLink Matrix to a Blueprint configuration.

Before You Begin

Read through this document in its entirety and ensure that the following required items are available:

2. Deployment Steps

Follow these steps to successfully deploy a SmartLink HDMI Matrix Switch. This page can be used as a checklist

to record which steps have been completed.

1. Perform a Site Survey ...............................................................................................................................................................

Before any system design or configuration is performed, we recommend that a site survey be

conducted to ensure that the system can be installed within the environment. Make note of the

locations of the rooms, room names, and wiring distances.

2. Create a List of Devices ...........................................................................................................................................................

Before starting the deployment, it is important to list the sources, displays, and controllers that will

be used. This will speed up the process of designing and configuring the system. Be sure to include

the device type and physical location in the list.

3. Record all Device Information ...............................................................................................................................................

Before deploying, it is recommended that all serial numbers, MAC Addresses, Savant IDs, and any

other specific information is recorded. This will allow for quick reference during deployment,

installation, and in the future for troubleshooting.

4. Research all Device Specifications ......................................................................................................................................

Knowing the capabilities of the source, display, and switching components is important to ensure

that they meet the A/V and control requirements of the system. Make note of control methods so

that the highest level can be used.

Count the number of IR and RS-232 connections to be used. This will be important when choosing a

Savant controller with the correct amount of control connections for the system.

Using the data collected in the Site survey and device research, identify the best connection for the

signal being used.

While this step may add time to the installation up front, it will save installing a device twice should

SmartLink HDMI Matrix Switch (SLN-84BT/SLN-86BT/SLN-88BT)

Front Panel (SLN-84BT | SLN-86BT | SLN-88BT)

On/Off (hole)

To Place Into Standby Mode: Insert pin into hole and hold for 8 seconds while

powered On by rear switch to place matrix into Standby mode.

To Remove From Standby Mode: Insert pin into hole and hold for 1 second

while powered On by rear switch.

Reset (hole)

Press and hold for 5 seconds while powered On to clear network settings.

Status LED will blink rapidly when reset is complete.

Power LED

Green: System has adequate power and is operating normally.

Red: System is in standby mode.

Off: System is not receiving power.

CPU Status

LED

Green: HDMI matrix is operating normally.

Green Flashing: Controller has a DHCP or static IP Address. Connecting to

host.

Off: Unit is rebooting

Red: Firmware update has failed and unit will be rebooted.

Red Flashing: No IP Address/Connecting to Network.

Amber: Firmware update in process.

Amber Flashing: Controller has a link-local IP Address. Connecting to host.

This applies to matrixes that are not connected to an active router and may be

connected directly to a host.

Over Temperature or Hardware Failure

If the Controller experiences a hardware failure, the Status LED indication will

be interrupted every 3 seconds with a solid Red indication. For example, if the

LED is flashing Green when a hardware failure occurs, the LED will flash Green,

solid Red, etc., in 3 second intervals.

4. Wiring and Connections

HDBaseT Link Connections

The link connections on the SmartLink Matrix are 5Play compliant and feature Power over HDBaseT (PoH), which

can supply power to compatible receivers. Read this section before making any connections and powering on the

matrix to avoid damaging any connected devices.

Power over HDBaseT (PoH)

Power over HDBaseT allows for 5Play compliant HDBaseT receivers to receive power on the same cable as the

audio, video, IR, RS-232, and Ethernet. This eliminates the need for a power supply connected to the receiver.

When non 5Play compliant receivers are used, PoH on the link port must be turned off before making any

connections to the SmartLink Matrix.

HDBaseT Protocol Differences

While similar in nature, the HDBaseT protocol is different than Ethernet protocol; PoH voltages supplied are

higher than PoE. For this reason, the HDBaseT link should never be connected to an Ethernet router or switch.

Doing so may cause damage to connected equipment.

HELPFUL INFORMATION!

• While HDBaseT transmission technology is much less susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI) than

other transmission technologies, Savant recommends that shielded Cat 5e/6/7 cable and shielded RJ-45

connectors be used for maximum signal reliability.

• To avoid HDBaseT signal loss, Savant recommends making a direct end-to-end (homerun) connection when

running the Cat 5e/6/7 cabling. Patch panels, wall plates, or similar types of splicing products allow noise to be

introduced, which reduces the quality of the video and in some instances video loss.

HDBaseT Configuration

When using a power supply for the HRX-SLN501 or a non 5Play compliant receiver at the endpoint, the Power

over HDBaseT must be turned off. This is accomplished using the Web User Interface (Web UI) on the matrix.

Perform these steps before attaching a power supply to any HDBaseT receiver.

1. Power Off the matrix.

2. Disconnect any HDBaseT link connections to the matrix.

3. Power On the matrix.

4. Retrieve the IP Address.

Refer to the Retrieving and Setting IP Addresses for Savant Devices Application Note located on the Savant

Community for more information.

5. Open the Web UI by following the steps in Accessing the Web UI.

6. Open the Inputs & Outputs tab.

7. Uncheck the Remote Power Receiver check box for the outputs that will be powered by PoH.

8. Power Off the matrix and reconnect the HDBaseT link cables.

9. Power On the matrix.

Zone Control Passthrough Connections

Each zone on the SmartLink Matrix contains control connections that can be used to pass control signals from a

Savant or 3rd party controller to the endpoint. These connections use standard Savant connectors, but have

different wiring than commonly used in a Savant system.

For more information about these connections, see Adding Zone Control and Data via HDBaseT.

Zone Passthrough RS-232 Wiring

The RS-232 passthrough ports are reverse of the Savant standard with pin 5 as transmit (TXD) and pin 6 as

receive (RXD). Wiring for the SmartLink Matrix side of the cable is shown in the following diagram, the wiring on

the opposite side may vary based on the device’s pin configuration.

Note:

Due to the pins being the reverse of the Savant standard, a straight-through cable is used when connecting to a

Savant controller.

Zone RS-232 Wiring (SmartLink Receiver)

The RS-232 ports follow the Savant standard with pin 5 as receive (RXD) and pin 6 as transmit (TXD). Wiring for

the HRX-SLN501 side of the cable is shown in the following diagram, the wiring on the opposite side may vary

based on the devices pin configuration.

Note:

The table below follows the Savant standard RS-232 pinout.

IMPORTANT!

When using an RJ-45 to DB9 adapter, the cable from the adapter to the SmartLink Receiver should be a straight-

through cable. Any required crossover should be achieved by using a Null adapter.

RJ-45 to DB9 Adapters

Savant offers RJ-45 to DB9 adapters in a variety of configurations that can be used for RS-232/422/485 control.

Refer to the RS-232 Conversion to DB9 and RS-422/485 Pinout Application Note located on the Savant

Community for more information on RJ-45 to DB9 adapters.

IMPORTANT!

If you are using RJ-45 to DB9 adapters not supplied by Savant:

• Ensure that any wires required for communication/control are terminated within the adapter.

• Ensure that all wires NOT required for communication/control are NOT terminated in the connector.

• Ensure that the unused wires in the connector are cut to prevent them from shorting out, as they are still

terminated in the RJ-45 connector on the controller side.

Zone Passthrough IR Wiring

IR connections are made using the supplied 4-pin Screw Down Plug-in Connector. Wiring is the same on the

matrix and the SmartLink Receiver.

IMPORTANT! IR Wiring Precautions

• Ensure that all IR emitters are within 15 feet (4.6 meters) from the location of the matrix or receiver.

• Use of 3rd party flashing IR emitters with Talk Back is not recommended. These types of emitters can draw

voltage away from the IR signal that can degrade IR performance.

• Output may be connected to an IR Flasher or directly to a device’s IR Input.

5. Blueprint Configuration

IMPORTANT!

Deploying a SmartLink Matrix within a Savant system is different than other Savant components. Follow all

instructions and warnings in this section carefully to ensure successful deployment of a SmartLink Matrix.

Adding the SmartLink Matrix

1. Create the rooms for the system. To make placement of components a smooth and quick process, we

recommend that all rooms be created as a first step. This will allow for components to be placed in the rooms

as they are added to the layout.

2. Add the matrix to the configuration.

a. Open the Component Library:

View >Show Component Library from the toolbar.

icon on the Menu Bar.

b. Enter SmartLink in the search box.

c. Select a SmartLink Matrix in the Component Library and drag it onto the configuration.

SLN-84BT:

8 inputs / 4 Outputs

SLN-86BT:

8 inputs / 6 Outputs

SLN-88BT:

8 inputs / 8 Outputs

If using an existing configuration, remove the component that the SmartLink Matrix is replacing.

d. Enter a unique name for the component and click Create.

3. Enter the Unique ID (UID) for the matrix.

In order to be recognized by the host, the UID located on the bottom of the matrix is required within Blueprint.

a. Select the matrix in the configuration and open the Inspector:

View > Show Inspector from the toolbar.

b. Enter the UID for the matrix being used in the system.

4. Connect the Control LAN (Ethernet) connection on the matrix to the Ethernet Port on a network router or

switch.

IMPORTANT!

Services for the configuration will not be generated unless the SmartLink Matrix is connected to a network router

or switch within Blueprint.

Tips for Selecting a Savant Controller

Every Savant configuration requires a controller in order to provide the appropriate services for the configuration.

While any controller can be used, there are certain parameters to keep in mind when using the matrix in a

configuration.

• If the SmartLink Matrix is the only AV switching component in the system, choose a controller that does not

have any AV switching that would add unnecessary overhead to the system.

• Select a controller that has sufficient control connections for all the components in the system. This will

eliminate the need to add controllers for more connections. Remember that each zone on the matrix can send

control to a zone.

Adding Display Devices

There are two ways a display can be connected to the matrix: local direct connection using HDMI and remote

connection using HDBaseT. Each one has different methods that are used to make the connections within

Blueprint.

Zone HDMI Out Directly to Display

1. Place the display device onto the layout and select the appropriate room.

2. Connect the HDMI input of the display to an HDMI output on the matrix.

3. Repeat steps 1 to 2 for all displays in the system.

Zone HDBaseT (Link) to Receiver to Display

1. Place the display device onto the layout and select the appropriate room.

2. Place an HRX-SLN-501 onto the layout and select the appropriate room.

3. Connect the Link connection on the matrix to the Link connection on the receiver.

4. Connect the HDMI input of the display to the HDMI out on the receiver.

Adding Zone Control and Data via HDBaseT

IR, RS-232, and Ethernet connections are provided for each zone output that can be connected to a Savant or 3rd

party controller to send control signals to the endpoint via HDBaseT. Control signals may also be sent to the

headend by connecting a Savant or 3rd party controller to the receiver located at the endpoint.

While the physical connection is from Controller to Matrix to HDBaseT Receiver to Device, the Blueprint

connection must go directly to the device being controlled. For example, to control a TV in a zone using an

HDBaseT Receiver, the Blueprint connection is Controller to TV, while the physical connection is Controller to

Matrix to HDBaseT Receiver to TV. This applies to IR, RS-232, and Ethernet.

Adding Audio Distribution Using Digital Coax Outputs

While the SmartLink Matrix provides audio via HDMI, digital coax outputs are provided as an alternative source of

audio. These coax outputs, which are tied to the HDMI inputs, should be connected to an audio distribution device

such as the SSA-3220 or Digital Audio Converter (DAC). Once connected to these devices, the audio can be

distributed to multiple zones. This functionality is shown in the Blueprint image below.

Common use cases:

• Audio only zones

• When audio in a zone is supplied via speakers that are separate from audio coming from a display device.

Additional Information:

Configuring Zones and I/O Paths

While SmartLink can be operated with default settings, I/O paths and zones can be configured to bring added

functionality to the system. Settings in SmartLink allow for a source to appear only on specific outputs or control

of the switch to appear in specific zones (rooms).

Enabling or Disabling Zones

By default, all zones are enabled. Use the steps below to limit the zones where an output will appear.

1. Select the SmartLink switch in the Blueprint layout

2. Open the Inspector.

Menu Bar > View > Show Inspector

3. In the Show drop-down, select Enabled in Zones

4. Uncheck the box next to the zone to disable in the matrix.

Allowing I/O Paths

In addition to assigning zones, inputs can be configured to appear only on certain outputs. This is useful to limit a

service to a particular zone or group of zones.

1. Select the SmartLink switch in the Blueprint configuration.

2. Open the Inspector.

Menu Bar > View > Show Inspector

3. In the Show drop-down, select Allowed I/O Paths

4. Under each output, uncheck the box for the input(s) that should not appear.
