Installing the adapter
Caution: Opening your computers case may void your computer’s
warranty. Contact your computer‘s manufacturer before opening the
case to make sure that you do not void the warranty.You may need to
have the adapter installed by your computer’s manufacturer or an
authorized computer technician.
Caution: Before touching any electronic components, make sure that you
first touch an unpainted, grounded metal object to discharge any static
electricity stored on your clothing or body.
To install the DX-E101:
1 Turn off your computer and unplug the power cord and all cables.
2 Remove your computer’s case cover. See your computers user
guide for information about removing the cover.
3 Locate an available PCI slot. PCI slots are usually white.
4 Remove the screw that secures the backplate (the small piece of
metal that covers the opening for the PCI card on the back panel of
your computer), then remove the backplate.
5 If the bracket on the DX-E101 is too tall to fit your computer’s case,
remove the bracket and replace with the includ3d half-height
bracket.
6 Carefully insert the adapter into the PCI slot. Do not touch the
metal connector on the adapter.
7 Secure the adapter to the case using the screw you removed from
the backplate.
8 Reinstall your computer’s case cover.
9 Plug in the power cord and other cables.
10 Connect one end of a Category 5 Ethernet cable (not included) to
the porton your DX-E101. Connect the other end to yor router or
network switch.
11 Start your computer, then install the adapter driver as described in
the next section.
Installing the driver
When your computer starts with your new adapter for the first time, it
will prompt you to install the driver.
To install the driver in Windows XP:
1 The Found New Hardware Wizard opens, asking, “Can Windows
connect to Windows Update to search for software?”

2 Click No, not this time, then click Next.
3 Insert the DX-E101 DC into your CD or DVD drive. The Dynex PCI
Adapter window opens automatically. Click Exit.
4 In the Found New Hardware Wizard, click Install the software
automatically (Recommended), then click Next.
Important: If a dialog box opens saying the Dynex DX-E101 PCI Fast
Ethernet Adapter has not passed Windows Logo testing, click Continue
Anyway.
Windows seraches for the drivers on the DX-101
CD and installs the drivers. When the installation
is complete, the Completing the Found New
Hardware Wizard window opens.
5 Click Finish. The driver installation is complete.
6 To set up your Windows XP network, see the instructions in the
User’s Guide on the Dynex CD.
To install the driver in Windows 2000:
1 The Found New Hardware Wizard runs automatically. Click NEXT.
2 Insert the DX-E101 CD into your CD or DVD drive. The Dynex PCI
Adapter window runs automatically. Click EXIT.
3 The Install Hardware Device Drivers window opens. Click Search
for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), and then
click Next.

4 In the Locate Driver Files window, click CD-ROM drives. Click to
clear all other checkboxes, and then click Next.
5 In the Driver Files Search Results window, click Next.
6 In the Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard window, click
Finish. The driver installation is complete.
7 For information about connecting your computer to a network,
see Windows Help.
To install the driver in Windows 98/Windows ME:
1 The Add New Hardware Wizard runs automatically. Click NEXT.
2 Insert the DX-E101 CD into your CD or DVD drive. The Dynex PCI
Adapter window runs automatically. Click EXIT.
3 Click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced), then click Next.
4 Click Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended), click
to select Removable Media, then click Next.
5 Click Next. Windows installs the DX-E101 drivers.

6 Click Finish. The driver installation is complete. You may be
prompted to restart your computer.
7 For information about connecting your computer to a network,
see Windows Help.
Enabling Wake-On-LAN
The adapter features Wake On LAN (WOL). This feature lets a remote
station “wake your computer when it is in Standby or Hibernate mode.
For more information about WOL, see your user guide.
Caution: The WOL cable is an interconnect cable with standard 3-pin
connectors on each end. If your computer’s system board WOL connector
does not fit the WOL cable or does not have 3 pins, do not try to force a
connection or alter the components to fit. Doing so could permanently
damage your computer.
Note: The WOL function is system dependent. In addition to the following
instructions, you may need to download WOL software from Intel or
another manufacturer’s Web site. See your computer’s user guide for
specific BIOS settings.
To enable WOL:
1 Turn off your computer andunplug the power cord and all cables.
2 Remove your computer’s case cover. See your computer’s user
guide for information about removing the cover.
3 Connect one end of the cable to the DX-E101 WOL connector on
the adapter. Both ends of the WOL cable are identical, so you can
use either end.
4 Examine the computer’s system board or see the system board
guide to locate the corresponding WOL connector on the system
board. The actual location varies, but the system board may have a
label beside the WOL connector.
5 Connect the other end of the cable to the WOL connector on the
system board.
6 Reinstall your computer’s cover.
7 Plug in the power cord and other cables, and then turn on your
computer.
8 Press Delete or F1 when prompted to enter the BIOS Setup utility.
The keys you press to enter the BIOS Setup utility may vary. See
your computer’s user guide.
9 Enable the WOL function or power-on function of the computer.
The name of this function is system dependent, but it may be
located in a category titled such as “Power Management. See
your computers user guide for more information regarding the
BIOS Setup utility and BIOS settings.

For troubleshooting information, see your user guide located on the
Dynex CD.
