The Backer 5/6-inch Recessed Retrofit with
SwitchSense® technology is designed to
be your ultimate battery back-up supply that
you can place in any existing 5-inch or
6-inch recessed canister within your home.
The Backer will provide up to 90 minutes of
continuous power delivering 200+ lumen
output on a full charge. During a power
outage, The Backer uses stored energy
from the NiMH battery to power the LED
system. The SwitchSense® technology
allows you to turn on The Backer using your
wall switch as you normally would. When
main power returns, The Backer returns to
normal operation and will automatically
start re-charging for the next time battery
power is needed.

Important! Up to four (4) Backer 5/6-inch
Recessed Retrofits may be installed on a
single wall switch circuit. Exceeding four
(4) units on a single switch circuit may
interfere with the SwitchSense® system
to recognize a power failure at the main
household circuit panel.
Step 1: Remove The Backer main housing /
trim from the box and make sure that no
parts are missing. Included with your
purchase is a standard Socket Adapter
Assembly with quick-connect male-end plug
and Retrofit Trim with butterfly clips and
quick-connect female-end plug.
Step 2: The Backer 5/6-inch Recessed
Retrofit includes a factory installed NiMH
battery. The unit is shipped with the battery
circuit in the OFF position. Prior to installing
The Backer into an existing 5 or 6 inch
canister, move the toggle switch to the ON
position to initiate the normal operating setup
(see Figure 1). This will insure that the
battery supply is now active and will send
battery supply to the LED system during
power outages and be able to receive power
from the house circuit for re-charging.
Step 3: Where applicable, it may be
necessary to remove an existing socket
bracket from the canister. Follow the steps in
Figure 2 to remove the socket bracket by
unscrewing the wing nut inside the canister
and detaching the socket from the socket
bracket. A list of applicable housing canisters
is provided in the Warning section.
Warning! Prior to beginning
any installation please turn
the power OFF at the Circuit
Panel and Wall Switch.
USE AND CARE GUIDE
Step 4: Thread the Socket Adapter Assembly
into the canister socket as shown in Figure 3.
Step 5: Plug the quick-connect male-end from
the Socket Adapter Assembly into the
female-end of the Retrofit Trim as shown in
Figure 4.
Step 6: Carefully squeeze together the butterfly
clips and insert into the holes or clips of the
existing canister as shown in Figure 5.
Step 7: Make sure all wires from the Socket
Adapter Assembly and Retrofit Trim are inside
the existing canister and carefully push the
Retrofit Trim upward into the canister. In some
existing shallow canisters you may need to
position the existing socket and Socket Adapter
Assembly adjacent to the side of the plastic
battery housing.
Important! Once the Installation is complete
restore power at the Circuit Panel.
