Ifsmokespillageoccursfromareplaceopeningwhen
thedoorisopen,thereiseitheraleakageintheue,a
blockageintheue,orsomeconditionisaffectingdraft
Understandinganddifferentiatingtheconditionswhich
cancauseeachofthesekindsofspillageproblemsis
essentialtotheirsolution.
• FlueLeakage
Check for improperly connected flue joints or a
damaged ue joint in the chimney system. Such
leakagewouldreducedraft(airwouldbedrawnin
throughtheleaksratherthanthroughthereplace).
The result might be difficult start-up and smoky
resthatmightspillifotheradversedraftconditions
accompanythisproblem.
• FlueBlockage
Thedampershouldbeopen.
Check for objects that may have fallen down the
chimney.
Besureyouhaveairavailableforcombustionandthat
yourrewoodisdryandwellseasoned.Buildyourres
properlyandaccordingtotheinstructionsgiveninop-
eratinginstructions,“StartingaFire”.Besureyourue
systemisinstalledcorrectlyandthatitistheproperdi-
ameterandheight.Checkforthefollowing:
• Allchimneysectionsareproperlyinstalled.
• Thechimneyiscleanand freeofcreosoteorsoot
buildup.
• Makesureoverhangingtreesandbranchesarecut
backwithintenfeetofthetopofthechimneyandthe
chimneyisfreeofdebrisfromanimals.
• Ensure the chimney cap is clean and free of any
buildupofsootorcreosoteifcapisequippedwitha
sparkarrestorscreen.
• Thewoodbeingusedindryandwellseasoned.
Ifyoustillsuspectyouhavealowdraftproblemitmay
be necessary to increase the volume of air in your
uesystem.Sincethediameterofyouruesystemis
matchedwiththesizeoftheuecollarandshouldnot
bechanged,thentheheightofthesystemmustbein-
creased.Addchimneysectionsoneatatimeuntilthe
draftimproves.
Insomecases,regardlessofwhatyoudo,itcanstillbe
difculttoestablishtheproperuedraft.Thisisespe-
ciallyevidentwhenusinganexteriorfactory-builtchim-
neyorexteriormasonrychimney.Tryholdingaburning
rolledupnewspaperasclosetotheueoutletaspos-
sibleforafewminutes,thenlightthepaperunderthe
kindling.Theheatgeneratedfromtheburningrolledup
newspapershouldhelpgetthedraftestablished.
Stillotherfactorscanaffecthowwellyouruesystem
performs.Neighboringstructures,highwinds,talltrees,
evenhillsidescanaffectaircurrentsaroundthechim-
ney.Welldesignedchimneycapsareavailablethatcan
help. Your replace dealer is the local expert in your
area. He can usually make suggestions or discover
problems that can be easily corrected allowing your
replacetooperatecorrectlyasithasbeendesigned,
providingsafeandeconomicalheatforyourhome.
Flue draft is measured as negative pressure in the
chimney.Theamountofnegativepressuredetermines
howstrongthedraftis.Thedraftisimportantbecause
itdrawsthecombustionairintothereplaceandpulls
thesmokeoutofthechimney.
Therearethreebasiccriteriaessentialinestablishing
andmaintaininguedraft:
• availabilityofcombustionair
• heatgeneratedfromthere
• diameterandheightoftheuesystem
Thesethreefactorsworktogetherasasystemtocreate
theuedraft.Increasingordecreasinganyoneofthem
willaffecttheothertwoandthuschangetheamountof
draftintheentiresystem.
Ifthereishardtostartandsmokespillsoutofthere-
place,oryounditdifculttoestablishandmaintaina
moderatelyhighburnrate,thentheuedraftistoolow
andcorrectivemeasuresmustbetaken.
