SPARK ARRESTER WARNING TO RESIDENTS OF
CALIFORNIAANDSEVERALOTHERSTATES
Under California law, and under the laws of several
other states, you are not permitted to operate an inter-
nal combustion engine using hydrocarbon fuels on any
forest, brush, hay,grain, or grass covered land; or land
covered by any flammable agricultural crop without an
engine spark arrester in continuous effective working
)rder.
Theengine on the unit is an internal combustion engine
which burns gasoline, a hydrocarbon fuel, and must be
equipped with a spark arrester muffler in continuous
effective working order. The spark arrester must be
attached to the engine exhaust system in such a
manner that flames or heat from the system will not
ignite flammable material. Failureof the owner/opera-
tor of the unit to comply with this regulation is a mis-
demeanor under California law (and other states) and
may also be a violation of other state and/or federal
regulations, laws, ordinances or codes. Contact your
localfire marshal or forest service for specific informa-
tion aboutwhich regulations apply in your area.

oughly familiar with the controls and the
proper useof thetillerand its engine=
Knowhow to stop the unit and disengage
the controls quickly=
2. Neverallow children to operatethe
tiller. Neverallow adults to operatethe
tiller without proper instruction.
3. Keepthe areaof operationclearof all
persons,particularly children andpets.
4. Keepin mind that theoperator or user
is responsiblefor accidents or hazards
occurring to other people,their property,
and themselves.
Preparation
1. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawhere the
tiller is to be usedand remove all foreign
objects.
2. Be sureall control levers arereleased
and the WheelGearLeveris in ENGAGE
position beforestarting the engine,
3. Do not operatethetiller without
wearing adequateouter garments. Avoid
loosegarments orjewelry that could get
caught in moving parts.
4. Donotoperatethetiller whenbarefootor
wearingsandals,sneakers,or light
footwear.Wearprotectivefootwearthatwill
improvefooting on slipperysurfaces.
5. Donottill nearundergroundelectric
cables,telephonelines,pipesor hoses.If in
doubt, contactyour telephoneor utility
company.
6. Warning: Handlefuelwith care;it is
highlyflammableand its vaporsareexplo-
sive. Takethefollowing precautions:

Storefuel in containers specifically
designedfor this purpose.
Thegascapshall neverbe removed
or fuel addedwhile the engine is
running. Allow the engineto cool
for severalminutes before adding
fuel.
C. Keepmatches,cigarettes, cigars,
pipes, open flames, and sparks
away from the fuel tank and fuel
container.
d. Fillfuel tank outdoors with extreme
care. Neverfill fuel tank indoors.
Use afunnel or spout to prevent
spillage.
e. Replaceall fuel tank and container
caps securely.
f. If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to
start the engine,but movethe
machine awayfrom the areaof
spillage and avoidcreating any
source of ignition until fuel vapors
havedissipated.
7. Never makeadjustmentswhen engine
is running (unless recommendedby
manufacturer).
Operation
1. Donot put handsor feet nearor under
rotating parts.
2. Exerciseextremecaution when on or
crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.
Stay alertfor hidden hazardsor traffic. Do
not carry passengers.
3.Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stopthe
engine,removethewirefromthe,spark
plugwireandpreventitfromtouchingthe
sparkplug,thoroughlyinspectthe
machineforanydamage,andrepairthe
damagebeforerestartingandoperating
themachine.
4.Exercisecautiontoavoidslippingor
falling.
5. Ifthe unit shouldstartto vibrateabnor-
mally,stopthe engine,disconnectthespark
plug wireandpreventit from touching the
sparkplug,andcheckimmediatelyfor the
cause.Vibration is generallya warning of
trouble.
6. Stopthe engine,disconnect the spark
plug wire and prevent itfrom touching the
spark plug wheneveryou leavethe operat-
ing position, before unclogging thetines,
or when making any repairs, adjustments
or inspections.
7. Takeall possible precautionswhen
leavingthe machineunattended.Stop the
engine. Disconnectspark plug wire and
move it awayfrom the spark plug. Move
WheelGear Leverto ENGAGE.
8. Beforecleaning, repairing, or inspect-
ing, stop the engineand make certainall
moving parts havestopped.Disconnect
the spark plug wire and prevent itfrom
touching the spark plug to preventacci-
dental starting.
9. Always keepthe tiller tine hood flap
down.
10. Neverusethetiller unless proper
guards, plates,or other safetyprotective
devicesare in place.
11. Donot run engine in an enclosed area.
Engineexhaustcontains carbon monoxide
gas, adeadlypoison that is odorless, col-
orless, andtasteless.
12. Keepchildren and petsaway.
13. Neveroperatethe tiller underengine
power if theWheel GearLever is in DIS-
ENGAGE(FREEWHEEL).In this position,
the wheelswill notholdthetiller back
and therevolvingtines couldpropelthe
tiller rapidlybackward,possiblycausing
lossofcontrol.Always move theWheel
Gear Leverto ENGAGEbefore starting the
engine or engaging thetines/wheelswith
the ForwardClutchor the ReverseClutch.
14. Beawarethat the tiller may unexpect-
edly bounceupward orjump backward if
the tines should strike extremely hard
packedsoil, frozen ground, or buried
obstacles like large stones, roots, or
stumps. If in doubt aboutthe tilling condi-
tions, always usethefollowing operating
precautionsto assist you in maintaining
control of the tiller:
a. Walk behindandto oneside ofthe
tiller, using one handonthe han-
dlebars. Relaxyourarm, but use a
securehandgrip.
b. Useslower engine speeds.
c. Clearthetilling area ofall large
stones,rootsand otherdebris.
d. Avoidusing downwardpressureon
handlebars.Ifneed be, use slight
upwardpressureto keepthetines
from diggingtoodeeply.
e. Beforecontactinghardpackedsoil
at the end ofa row, reduceengine
speedand lift handlebarstoraise
tinesout ofthe soil.
f. In an emergency, stop tines and
wheels byreleasingwhichever
ClutchLeveris engaged.Do not
attemptto restrainthetiller.
15. Do not overloadthe tiller's capacityby
attempting to till too deeplyat too fast a
rate.
16. Neveroperatethe tiller at high trans-
port speedson slippery surfaces. Look
behind and usecare whenbacking up.
17. Do not operatethe tiller on aslope
that istoo steepfor safety.When on
slopes,slow down and makesure you
havegood footing. Neverpermit the tiller
to freewheel down slopes.
18. Neverallow bystanders nearthe unit.
19. Onlyuseattachments and accessories
that are approvedby GardenWay Inc.
20. Usetiller attachments and accessories
when recommended.
21. Neveroperatethetiller without good
visibility or light.
22. Neveroperatethetiller ifyou aretired, or

Maintenance and Storage
1. Keepthe tiller, attachments and acces-
sories in safeworking condition.
2. Checkall nuts, bolts, and screws atfre-
quentintervals for proper tightness to be
surethe equipment is in safeworking con-
dition.
3. Neverstorethetillerwithfuel inthefuel
tank insidea buildingwhereignitionsources
arepresentsuchashotwaterandspace
heaters,furnaces,clothesdryers,stoves,
electricmotors,etc.). Allowengineto cool
beforestoring inanyenclosure.
4. Toreducethechancesof afire hazard,
keepthe enginefreeof grass,leaves,or
excessivegrease.
5. Storegasoline in acool, well-ventilated
area,safelyawayfrom anyspark- or flame-
producingequipment. Storegasolinein an
approvedcontainer,safelyawayfrom the
reachof children.
6. Referto the storage instructions in the
Maintenancesection of this Manualand
the separateEngineOwner's Manualfor
instructions if the tiller isto be stored for
anextendedperiod.
7. Neverperform maintenancewhile the
engineis running or the spark plug wire is
connected,exceptwhenspecifically
instructed to do so.
8. If thefuel tank hasto bedrained,do this
outdoors.

Assembly
To prevent personal injury or property
damage,do not startthe engineuntil all
assembly steps are complete and you
haveread andunderstandthe safetyand
operatinginstructionsinthis Manual.
INTRODUCTION
Carefullyfollow these assemblysteps to
correctly prepareyour tiller for use. It is
recommendedthat you readthis Section
in its entirety before beginning assembly.
INSPECT UNIT
Inspect the unit and carton for damage
immediately after delivery. Contact the
carrier (trucking company) if you find or
suspect damage. Inform them of the
damageand request instructionsfor filing
a claim. To protect your rights, put your
claim in writing and mail a copy to the
carrier within 15 days after the unit has
beendelivered.Contact us atthe factory if
you needassistancein this matter.
STEP 1: UNPACKING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Removeany cardboardinserts and
packagingmaterial from the carton.
Removeany staplesfrom the bottom of
the carton andthen lift the carton up and
off the unit.
2. Thetiller is heavyand you should not
attempt to remove it from the shipping
platform until the handlebarsare installed
and the WheelGearLeveris placed in
DISENGAGE.The procedurefor removing
the tiller is explainedin Step2 of these
assembly steps.
3. Removethe handlebar assemblyfrom
the carton. Do not removethe two control
leversfrom the handlebars.
4. Removethe separatehardwarebag
from the carton. Checkthat you havethe
items listednext and shown in Figure
2-1 (parts shown at reducedsizes).
Contact your localdealer or the factory if
any items are missing or damaged.

STEP 2: ATTACH HANDLEBARS
I. Removethe ReverseClutchControl (B,
Figure2-2) from the handlebars(A).
Removeany rubber bandsfrom the
handlebars.

2. Position the handlebarcross-brace (C,
Figure2-3) in front of the curvedheight
adjustment bracket(D) and placethe han-
dlebarendsto the outside of the two
mounting tabs on top of thetransmission.

3. Attachthe handlebarsto the mounting
tabs with two 3/8-16 x 1" screws (headsof
screws go to inside of tabs), 3/8" flat
washers and 3/8-16 Nylock lock nuts (see
Figure2-3). Do notfully tighten the
screws atthis time.
4. Move the handlebarto align the
threaded hole in the cross-brace with one
of thefour slots in the curved height
adjustment bracket. Placethe keyed
washer (E,Figure2-4) on the height
adjustment handle (F)with the raisedkeys
(edges)on the washerfacing down.

5. Threadthe height adjustment handle
(F,Figure2-3) intothe threadedhole in
the handlebarcross-brace, making sure
that the raisedkeyson thewasher fit into
the selectedslot on the curved bracket.
Tighten the handlesecurely. Next,
securelytighten the two screws that attach
the handlebarsendsto the mounting tabs.
6. To remove thetiller from its shipping
platform, first carefully unwrapthe Wheel
GearLeverand cableassembly (G, Figure
2-5) from around the engine. Next,move
the leverto the DISENGAGEposition (this
allows the wheels to rotate).

IMPORTANT:Usethe DISENGAGEposi-
tion only whenthe engine is not running.
Beforestarting theengine,the WheelGear
Lever must be placedin the ENGAGEposi-
tion (seeSection 3 for details).
STEP 3: ATTACHREVERSE
CLUTCH LEVER
1. Slidethe ReverseClutchControl
(removed in Step2) down through the
hole in the left sideof the handlebar
control panel and pass it abovethe cross-
braceat the lower endof the handlebar.
2. Insertthe end of the lever(H, Figure
2-6) through the hole inthe pivot (I). Note
there aretwo small holes in the lower end
of the lever.

3. Installa 5/16"flat washer (8, Figures
2-1 and 2-6) and secure it with a 5/8" long
straight cotter pin (7) through the bottom
hole in the lever. Spreadthe legsof the
straight cotter pin apart and bendthem
overto prevent the pin from coming loose.
STEP 4: ATTACHFORWARD
CLUTCH ROD
1. Theupper end of the ForwardClutch
rod is attachedto the bottom of the han-
dlebar control panel. Turnthe rod (L,
Figure2-7) so that its end points inward
toward the clutch swivel plate(HH).

2. Insert a hairpin cotter down through
the hole in therod that is locatedclosest
to the bend (see4, Figures2-1 and 2-7).
3. Thereare four numberedholes in the
clutch swivel plateand four numbered
slots in thecurved height adjustment
bracket(seeFigure2-8). Forcorrect oper-
ation of the ForwardClutch rod, the num-
beredhole usedfor the ForwardClutch
rod must matchwith the numberedslot in
the height adjustment bracket. For
example,if the handlebaris set into slot
#1,then the ForwardClutch rod must be
installed into hole #1 of the clutch swivel
plate.

IMPORTANT:Wheneverthehandlebar
height is changed,the hole position of the
ForwardClutch rod must be changed
accordingly. Changingthe handlebar
height changesthe tension on the Forward
Clutchrod - this tension must be adjusted
byrelocating the rod into theappropriate
hole in the clutch swivelplate.
4. Selectthe proper hole in the clutch
swivel plateand insert the Forward Clutch
rod so that thetip facesinward (see Figure
2-8). Securetherod by inserting a
second hairpin cotter (4, Figures2-1 and
2-7) through thehole near the tip of the
rod.
5. Checkfor correct tension on the
ForwardClutch rod as follows:
(a) Two interconnected Forward Clutch
levers hang beneaththe control panel.
Lift and hold the right-side lever
againstthe handlebargrip.
STEP 5: CHECKTRANSMISSION
GEAR OIL LEVEL
Thetransmission wasfilled withgear oil at
the factory. However,you should check
the gear oil levelto make certain it is
correct.
IMPORTANT:Do not operatethetiller if
the gear oil levelis low. Doing sowill
Gap Should be result in severedamageto the transmis-
3/16"-to'5/16" sion components.
1. Move thetiller to a levelarea.

(b) Whilesqueezingthe lever, measurethe
gap betweenthe E-ring (A, Figure2-9)
andthe lower endof theclutch rod
bracket(B). Thegap should be
between3116°and 5116".
NOTE:A stack of five penniesis
approximately 5/16"thick.
(c) If the gap is incorrect:
2. Pull the Depth Regulator Lever(M,
Figure2-10) straight back andthen slide it
to thesecond notch from the top. If the
leverdoesnot move freely, lift the tine
hood flap and look for a plastictie secur-
ing the lever. Cut and remove thetie.
(I) First checkthat the Forward Clutch
rod is in thecorrect hole in the
clutch swivelplate (Figure2-8). If
not, reposition the rod and repeat
Step 5b. Figure 2-10:Putleverinsecondnotch.
(2) If the Forward Clutchrod is in the
correct hole and the gap is incor-
rect, you will needto adjust the
length of the Forward Clutchrod.
To do this, first releasethe Forward
Clutch leverand thendisconnect
the rod from the clutch swivel plate
(remove hairpin cotter at end of rod
and pull rod out of hole in clutch
swivel plate).
3. Removethe oil levelcheck plug (N,
Figure2-I I) on the left-side of the trans-
mission. (Dueto dried paint on the plug
threads, it may require some force to
remove the plug the first time.) Thegear
oil leveliscorrect if oil starts to flow out of
the hole asthe plug is removed. If so,
securely reinstall the plug.
If thegap is more than5/16", rotate
the rod counterclockwise (as
viewed from the front of tiller) to
decreasethegap. Reinstallthe rod
in the correct clutch swivel plate
hole,secure it with the hairpin
cotter, and repeatSteps 5a and 5b.
If thegap is less than 3/16" rotate
the rod clockwise (asviewed from
the front of tiller) to increasethe
gap. Reinstallthe rod intothe
correct clutch swivel platehole
(Figure2-8), secure it with the
hairpin cotter, and repeatSteps 5a
and 5b.

4. If oil doesnot flow from the check
hole, add SAE140, SAE85W-140 or SAE
80W-90 weight gear oil (preferably use
API ratedGL-4 gear oil; however, GL-5
can be usedfor small top-offs) asfollows:
NOTE:Donot use automatic transmission
fluid or motor oil in the transmission.
(a)Cleanareaaround oil fill hole (L, Figure
2-I I) and unscrew oil fill plug.
(b) Usinga cleanfunnel, slowly add gear

STEP 6: ADD MOTOR OIL TO ENGINE
Thetiller is shippedwithoutoil in the
engine.
IMPORTANT:Do not start the engine
without first adding motor oil. Severe
engine damagewill result if the engine is
run withoutoil.
I. With the unit on levelground, pull the
DepthRegulator Lever(M, Figure2-10)
back and then move it up or down until the
engine is level.
2. Add motor oil according to the instruc-
tions provided in theengine manufac-
turer's EngineOwner's Manual (included
in the unit's literature package).
STEP 7: ATTACH
ENGINE THROTTLE LEVER
Forshipping purposes,the engine throttle
cableassembly is wrappedaround the
engine. Carefullyunwrapthe cableand
attach it asfollows:
I. Routethe throttle cableupthe right-
side handlebar.
2. Insertthe lever(P, Figure2-13) up
through theslot in the control panel,
labeledENGINETHROTTLE.

3. Insert thetwo #10-32 x I12" round
head screws down through the"+" marks
on the control paneldecaland through the
holes in the baseof the engine throttle
lever.
4. Holdthe engine throttle leverbase
against the bottom of the control panel
and secure it with the two #10 lockwasher
and #10-32 nuts,
5. Placethe "T" shapedenginethrottle
lever knobonto the end of the leverand
use a board to tap the knobdown until it
seatsfirmly on the lever (seeFigure2-I 3).
6. Move the leverforward and backward
- it should move freely through the full
range of travel. (Notethat there is a
detent atthe SLOWsetting which catches
the lever. This detent preventsthe lever
from unintentionally moving to the STOP
setting when you arejust trying to slow
the enginedown.) If the leveris difficult
to move awayfrom the STOPsetting,
loosen both screws and movethe lever
assembly slightly to the left. Retighten
both screws and recheckthe movement.
Adjust the leverasneeded.
7. Securethe throttle cableto the right-
side handlebarwith two plasticties (R,
Figure2-14) locatedabout two feet apart.
Theserrated sideof the tie should beon
the inside of the loop. Snip offany excess
tie length with scissors.
STEP 8: ATTACHWHEEL GEAR LEVER
Forshipping purposes,thewheel gear
cableis wrappedaround the transmission.
Carefullyunwrap thecableand attach it as
follows:
I. Routethewheel gearcable up the left- S --
side handlebarand insert the lever (S,
Figure2-I 5) up through the slot in the
control panel,labeled WHEELGEAR.
2. Inserttwo #10-32 x 1/2" round head
screws down through the "+" marks on
the control paneldecaland through the
holes in the baseof the lever,
3. Securethe basewith two #10 lock-
washers and #10-32 nuts.
4. Placethewheel gear leverknob on the
end of the leverand usea boardto tap the
knob down until it seatsfirmly on the lever
(seeFigure2-15).
5. Securethecableto the left-side han-
dlebarwith two plastic ties (T,Figure
2-14) located abouttwo feet apart. Snip
off anyexcesstie lengthwith scissors.

STEP9: CHECKTIRE AIR
PRESSURE
Usean automotive-type tire pressure
gaugeto checkthe air pressure in both
tires. Deflateor inflate both tires evenly
between15 and 20 PSi (poundsper
squareinch). Be surethat both tires have
equalair pressureor the unit will pull to
oneside.
STEP 10: CHECK HARDWARE
TIGHTNESS
Inspect the hardwareon the unit and
tighten any loosescrews, bolts and nuts,

WHEEL GEAR LEVER
This lever (A,Figure3-I) hastwo posi-
tions: ENGAGEand DISENGAGE.
In the ENGAGEposition, the wheels will
start turning when either the Forward
Clutchor the ReverseClutch isengaged.
NOTE:Thetines will alsostart turning
when either clutch isengaged.
Never place the Wheel Gear Lever in
DISENGAGE (Freewheel) when the
engineis running.
Having the Wheel Gear Lever in
DISENGAGE and then engaging the
tines/wheels with either the Forward
Clutchor the ReverseClutch couldallow
the tines to propel the tiller rapidly
backward.
Failure to follow this instruction could
result in personal injury or property
damage.
The DISENGAGE(freewheel) position
placesthewheelsin freewheeling modeto
allowthe wheels toturn without starting
the engine. Usethe DISENGAGEposition
onlywhen the engine isnot running.

FORWARD CLUTCH LEVERS
Two interconnected levers (B,Figure3-1)
control engagementof the forward driveto
the wheelsand powerto thetines.
Never engage wheels and tines with
ForwardClutchor ReverseClutchunless
Wheel GearLever is in ENGAGE.
Engagingthe ForwardClutchor Reverse
Clutch when wheels are not engaged
could allow the tines to rapidly propel
tiller backward.
Failure to follow this warning could

To OperateForwardClutch:
1. Beforeengagingthe Forward Clutch,
put theWheelGear Leverinto the ENGAGE
position (see"WARNING"above).
2. Lift and hold one or both leversagainst
the handlebargrips to engagethewheels
and tines.
3. ReleaseBOTHlevers to disengage
wheels and tines. All forward motion will
stop (enginewill continue to run).
IMPORTANT: TheForward Clutch Levers
are connectedto a mechanicalinterlock
that automatically shifts aseparateWheel
GearLever (A,Figure3-I) into ENGAGE
position when either ForwardClutch Lever
is pulled up against the handlebars. This
isa safety feature designedto prevent the
wheels from being in DISENGAGE(free-
wheel) position whenthe tines are
rotating.
Beforestarting the engine,test the func-
tion of the mechanicalinterlock asfollows:
I. Put WheelGearLeverinto DISENGAGE
position and roll tiller back and forth a few
inches.Wheelsshould roll freely.
2. Without rolling the tiller, squeezeeither
ForwardClutchLever againstthe handle-
bar grips. As the leversmove upward, the
mechanicalinterlock automatically moves
the WheelGearLeverforward into the
ENGAGEposition (roll tiller back andforth
a few inches). If it does, the wheelswill
not roll freely whenyou pushand pull on
the handlebars.
3. Themechanical interlock works prop-
erly if it functions as described in Step 2.
If the mechanicalinterlock does not func-
tion properly, do not operatethetiller until
it hasbeencorrected (seeyour authorized
dealeror contact thefactory).
REVERSECLUTCH CONTROL
This control (C, Figure3-I) engagesthe
reversedrive to thewheels and power to
the tines. It is used for moving the tiller
short distances in a reversedirection.
ToOperate ReverseClutch:
• Useextreme cautionwhenreversingor
pullingthe machinetowardsyou. Look
behindtoavoidobstacles.
Never attempt to till in reverse.
Failure to follow this warning could
result in personal injury or property
damage.
1. Beforeengagingthe ReverseClutch,
put the WheelGearLeverinto ENGAGE.
(see"WARNING" at left).
2. Releasethe Forward Clutch Levers.
3. To move the tiller in reverse,first stop
all forward motion. Lift up the handlebars
until the tines clear the ground and pull
the ReverseClutch leverout.
Thewheelswillrotateinareversedirec-
tionaslongastheleverisheldin
REVERSE.Tostopthewheelsandtines,
releasetheleveranditwillreturnto
NEUTRAL.Neverattempttotill while
movingin reversedirection.
DEPTH REGULATOR LEVER
This lever (E,Figure3-2) controls the
tilling depth of the tines. Pull the lever
straight backand slide it up or down to
engagethe notched heightsettings.

Thehighest notch (lever all theway down)
raisesthe tines approximately I-I12
inches offthe ground. This "travel" posi-
tion allows thetiller to be movedwithout
thetines digging into the ground.
Moving the leverup increasesthetilling
depth. The lowest notch allows atilling
depth of approximately six to eight inches,
dependingon soil conditions.
Forbest results, alwaysbegin tilling at a
very shallow depth setting and gradually
increasetilling depth.
Place Depth Regulator Lever in
"travel" position before starting
engine. This position prevents the
tines from touching the ground until
you arereadyto begintilling.
Do not attempt to till too deeply too
quickly. Graduallyworkdowntodeeper
tilling depths.
Failure to follow this warning could
result in personal injury or property
damage.
HANDLEBAR HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
Handlebarheight is adjustable to four dif-
ferent settings=Whensetting the height,
keepin mind that the handlebarswill be
lower whenthe tines areengagedin the
soil=
Whenever the handlebar height is
changed,the ForwardClutchshift mech-
anism mustbereadjusted.
Beforeadjustingor checkingthe Forward
Clutch mechanism, shut engine off, dis-
connect spark plug wire and prevent it
from touchingsparkplug.
Failure to follow this warning could
cause the ForwardClutch mechanismto
operate improperlywhichcould result in
personalinjuryor propertydamage.
To AdJustHandlebarHeight:
1. Stop engine,wait for all parts to stop
moving andthen disconnect spark plug
wire.
2. Loosenthe two screws at lower ends
of handlebar.
3. Loosenheight adjustment handle (F,
Figure3-3) and pull keyedwasher (G) free
from slots in curved height adjustment
bracket.

4. Move handlebarsto a new slot setting
and insert the raisedkey on the keyed
washer into theslot. Tighten the height
adjustment handle securely.
5. Retightenthe two screws at endsof
handlebar.
6. Adjust the tension on the Forward
Clutch rod shift mechanism asfollows:
(a) Removeinner hair pin cotter from end
of ForwardClutch rod=
(b) Thereare four numberedholes in the
clutch swivel plate (seeFigure3-4) and
four numberedslots in thecurved
height adjustment bracket. Forcorrect
operationof the ForwardClutch mech-
anism,the numbered holes usedfor
the ForwardClutch rod must match the
numberedslot in the heightadjust-
ment bracket. Example:If handlebar is
in slot #4, put ForwardClutch rod into
hole #4 of clutch swivel plate.

(c) Selectthe correct hole in the clutch

begin using it in the garden.
BREAK-IN OPERATION

4. Releaseall controls on the tiller.
Keep awayfrom rotatingtines. Rotating
tines will causeinjury.
5. If the engine is equippedwith afuel
shutoff valve,turn thevalve to theopen
position, asinstructed in the separate
EngineOwner's Manual.
6. Move the EngineThrottle Leverinto the
STARTposition.
7. Chokeor prime the engineas instructed
in the separateEngineOwner's Manual.
8. Checkbehind you to avoid contacting
anyobstacles whenpulling the starter
rope. Placeone handon the fuel tank to
stabilizethe unit anduse the recoil starter
to start the engine asinstructed in the
EngineOwner'sManual. Whenthe engine
starts,gradually movethe choke lever(on
enginessoequipped)to theNOCHOKE,
CHOKEOFFor RUNposition, whichever
applies.
9. Usethe FASTthrottle speedsetting
when tilling.
Stoppingthe Engine
1. To stop the wheelsand tines, release
the ForwardClutch leversor the Reverse
ClutchControl (whichevercontrol is in
use).
2. Tostop the engine,move the Engine
Throttle Leverinto the STOPposition,
OPERATINGTILLER
Beforetilling, contactyour telephoneor
Do not pushdown on the handlebars to
try to make the tiller till more deeply.
This prevents the wheels from holding
the tiller back and can allow the tines
to rapidly propel the tiller backward
toward the operator, which could result
in loss of control, propertydamage, or
personal injury.
(b) Asthetillermovesforward, relax and
let thewheels pull the unit along
while the tines dig. Walk behind and
a little to one side of the tiller. Usea
light but secure grip with one hand
on the handlebars, but keepyour
arm loose. SeeFigure4-2. Letthe
tiller move aheadat its own pace.
Do not push down on the handlebars
totry and force thetiller to dig
deeper- this takesweight off the
wheels,reduces traction, and causes
thetines to try and propel the tiller.

6. Toturn the tiller around:
(a) Practiceturning in a level,open area.
Be very careful to keepyour feet and
legs awayfrom the tines.
(b) Tostart aturn, reducethe engine
speedandthen lift the handlebars
until the engine and tines are bal-
ancedoverthe wheels (Figure4-4).

3. Start the engine andallow it to warm
up. Whenwarm, move thethrottle control
into the FASTspeedsetting.
4. Forforward motion of thewheels and
powerto the tines:
(a) Pull up and hold the Forward Clutch
levers againstthe handlebars. To
stop the wheels and tines, release
both levers.

CHANGING BELT RANGE SPEEDS
Thetiller hastwo forward belt range
speedsfor the wheels andtines: Low and
High. Thetwo rangesare obtained by
moving the forward drive belt betweentwo
setsof grooves on the forward drive pulley
andthe transmission drive pulley.
NOTE:The Highspeedbelt range is rec-
ommendedfor all tilling purposes. The
Low speedbelt rangewill operatethetines
andwheels at a slower forward speed,
which may be suitable in some conditions
(such astilling in very hard ground).
To Changefrom Lowto HighSpeed:
1. Stopthe engine,allow itto cool, and
disconnect thespark plug wire.
2. Move the WheelGearLeverinto the
DISENGAGEposition.
3. Removethe two nuts from the plastic
belt cover on top of thetransmission and
removethe beltcover.
4. From beneaththe tiller, movethe
forward drive beltout of the transmission
low speedgroove (B, Figure4-10) and
into the high speedgroove (D).
5. Pull upwardon the beltto remove any
slackand slip the belt out of the engine
drive pulley low speedgroove (A,Figure
4-I0) and into the high speedgroove (C).
NOTE:If the belt isdifficult to move, pull
on theengine start rope while pushing the
belt with your finger (enginedrive pulley
will turn asstart rope is pulled).
6. Checkthat the belt iswithin theforward
belt guide (E,Figures4-10 and 4-I I) on
the right-side of the unit and is within the
forward idler (F,Figure4-11) on the left-
side. Besure that the belt is situatedin
the center grooves (C and D, Figure4-10)
of the engine (upper) and transmission
(lower) pulleys.
7. Reinstallthe plastic belt cover and
secure it with thetwo nuts.
8. Put WheelGearLever in ENGAGEand
reconnect spark plug wire beforeattempt-
ing to startthe engine,

forward drive belt out of the transmission
pulley high speedgroove (D, Figure4-10)
and into the low speedgroove (B).
5. Pull upward on the belt to removeany
slackand slip the belt out of the engine
drive pulley high speedgroove (C,Figure
4-I0) and intothe low speedgroove (A).
NOTE:If the belt is difficult to move,pull
on the engine start rope while pushing the
belt with your finger (engine drive pulley
will turn as start rope is pulled).
6• Checkthat the beltis within the forward
belt guide (E,Figures4-I0 and 4-I I) on
the right-side of the unit and iswithin the
forward idler (F, Figure4-11) on the left-
side. Besure that the belt is situated in
the rear grooves (A and B,Figure4-10) of
the engine (upper) and transmission
(lower) pulleys.
7. Reinstallthe plastic belt cover and
secure it with the two nuts.
8• Putthe WheelGearLeverin ENGAGE
and reconnectthe spark plug wire before
attempting to start the engine.
TILLING TIPS & TECHNIQUES
This is a CRT(counter-rotating tine) tiller. As the wheels pull
forward,thetines rotatebackward. Thiscreatesan"uppercut"tine
action which digs deeply,uprooting soil and weeds. Don't over-
loadthe engine,but dig as deeplyas possibleon eachpass. On
later passes,the wheels maytend to spin in the soft dirt. Help
them along by lifting up slightlyon thehandlebar(one hand,palm
up,works mosteasily).
Avoid the temptation to push down on the handlebars in an
attemptto force thetiller to dig deeper. Doingsotakesthe weight
off thepoweredwheels,causingthemto losetraction. Withoutthe
wheels to hold the tiller back,the tines will attempt to propel the
tiller backward,towards the operator. (Sometimes,slight down-
ward pressureon the handlebarswill help get through a particu-
larlytough sectionof sod or unbrokenground, but in most cases
this won't benecessary.)
When cultivating (breaking up surface soil around plants to
destroy weeds, see Figure 4-9), adjust the tines to dig only
I" to 2" deep. Usingshallow tilling depths helpspreventinjury
to plants whose roots often grow close to the surface. If
needed,lift up on the handlebarsslightly to prevent the tines
from digging too deeply. (Cultivatingon a regular basis elimi-
natesweeds,and loosensand aeratesthe soil for better mois-
tureabsorptionandfasterplantgrowth.)
• Watering the garden area a few days prior to tilling will make
tilling easier,aswill lettingthenewlyworkedsoil setfor a dayor
two beforemakinga final,deeptilling pass.
With experience,you will find the '_ustright" tilling depthand tilling speedcombinationthat is bestfor
yourgarden.
Settheenginethrottle leverat a speedto givethe engineadequatepowerand yetallowit to operateatthe slowestpossiblespeed...atleast
until you haveachievedthe maximumtilling depthyou desire.Fasterenginespeedsmay bedesirablewhen makingfinal passesthrough
theseedbedor whencultivating.Selectionof thecorrectenginespeed,in relationto thetilling depth,will ensurea sufficientpowerlevelto
do thejob without causingthe engineto labor.
Whiletilling, relaxand let thewheels pull
the tiller along while the tines do the
digging. Walk on the sidethat is not yet
finished (to avoidmakingfootprints in the
freshly tilled soil) and lightly, but securely
grip thehandlebarwith just onehand.
Wheneverpossible, walk on the untilled
sideof theunit to avoidmakingfootprints
in your freshly tilled or cultivated soil.
Footprintscausesoil compactionthat can
hamperroot penetrationand contributeto
soil erosion. They can also "plant"
unwanted weed seeds back into the
freshlytilled ground.
Tilling wet soil often resultsin large, hard
clumpsof soilthat caninterferewith plant-
ing.If time permits,wait a dayor two after
heavyrains to allow the soil to dry before
tilling. Testsoil bysqueezingit into a ball.
If it compressestoo easily,it is too wet to
till.
Whenpreparinga seedbed,go overthe samepathtwice in the first row, then
overlap one-half the tiller width on the rest of the passes (see Figure
4-6). Whenfinished in one direction,makea secondpassat a right angleas
shownin Figure4-7. Overlapeachpassfor best results(in very hardground,
it maytakethreeor four passesto thoroughlypulverizethesoil.)
If the garden size will not

TILLING TIPS & TECHNIQUES (cont.)
Readthefollowing recommendationsbeforetilling onslopes:
If you must gardenon a moderateslope, pleasefollow two very
importantguidelines:
1.Till only on moderate slopes, never on steep ground where
footing is difficult (reviewsafetyrulesin Section1: Safetyof this
manual).
2. Till up and down slopes rather than across slopes. Tilling verti-
cally on a slope allows maximum planting area and also leaves
room for cultivating.
IMPORTANT:Whentilling on slopes,maintain correct motor oil
level (checkevery one-half hour of operation). Theslope incline
causestheoil to slant awayfrom its normal levelwhich canstarve
enginepartsof lubrication. Keepthe motor oil levelat thefull point
atall times!
Donot operatethetiller on a slopetoo steepfor safe opera-
tion. Till slowly and be sure that you have good footing.
Never permitthe tiller tofreewheel downslopes. Failureto
follow thiswarningcould resultin personalinjury.
Tilling Upand DownSlopes(VerticalTilling)
Tominimizesoilerosion,addenoughorganicmattertothe soilfor
good moisture-holding texture, and avoid leaving footprints or
wheelmarks.
Whentilling vertically,try to makethe first pass uphill (the tiller
digs moredeeplygoing uphill than it doesdownhill). In soft soil
or weeds,you may haveto lift the handlebarsslightly while going
uphill. Whengoing downhill, overlapthe first passby aboutone-
halfthewidth ofthetiller.
Thetines havea self-clearingactionwhich eliminatesmosttangling of debrisin thetines.
However, occasionally dry grass, stringy stalks or tough vines may become tangled.
Followtheseproceduresto helpavoidtanglingandto cleanthetines,if necessary.
To reducetangling, set the depth regulatordeep enough to get maximum "chopping"
action as the tines chop the material against the ground. Also, try to till under crop
residuesor covercropswhiletheyaregreen,moistandtender.
• Whiletilling, try swayingthehandlebarsfrom sideto side(about6" to 12"). This"fishtail-
ing"actionoftenclearsthetinesof debris.
If tangling occurs, lift the tines out of the soil and run the tiller in reverse (if unit is
equippedwith poweredreverse)for a few feet. This reversingaction of the tines should
unwindmostof thedebris.
It may be necessaryto removethe debris by hand (a pocketknife will help you to cut
away the material).Stop the engineand disconnectthe spark plug wire beforeclearing
thetines byhand.
Before clearingthe tinesbyhand, stop
the engine, allow all moving parts to
stop and disconnect the spark plug
wire. Removethe ignitionkeyon elec-
tric start models. Failure to follow
this warning could result in personal
injury.
LOADING AND UNLOADING TILLER
Loading and unloading the tiller into a
vehicle is potentially hazardousand we
don't recommenddoing so unlessabso-
lutely necessary,as this could result in
personalinjuryor propertydamage.
However, if you must load or unloadthe
tiller, follow theguidelinesgivennext.
• Before loading or unloading, stop the
engine, wait for all parts to stop moving,
disconnect the spark plug wire and let
the engine and muffler cool.
The tiller is too heavy (over 175 Ibs.,
depending on model) and bulky to lift
safely by one person. Two or more
people should sharethe load.
Use sturdy ramps and manually (engine
shut off) roll the tiller into and out of the
vehicle. Two or more people are needed
to do this.
• Ramps must be strong enough to
support the combined weight of the tiller
and any handlers. The ramps should
provide good traction to prevent slipping;
they should have side rails to guide the
tiller along the ramps; and they should
have a locking device to secure them to
the vehicle.
The handlers should wear sturdy
footwear that will help to prevent
slipping.
Position loading vehicle with ramp angle
asflat as possible (the less incline to the
ramp, the better). Turn vehicle's engine
off andapply its parking brake.
When going up the ramps, stand in the
normal operating position and push the
tiller ahead of you. Have a person at
eachsideto turn thewheels.
• Whengoing down ramps,walk backward
with the tiller following you. Keep alert
for any obstacles behind you. Position a
person at each wheel to control the
speedof the tiller. Nevergo down ramps
tiller-first, asthe tiller could tip forward.
• Place wooden blocks on the downhill
sideof the wheels if you needto stop the
tiller from rolling down the ramp. Also,
use the blocks to temporarily keep the
tiller in placeon the ramps (if necessary),
andto chock thewheels in placeafter the
tiller is in the vehicle.
After loading the tiller, prevent it from
rolling by engaging the wheels (put
WheelGear Lever into ENGAGE).Chock
the wheels with blocks and securely tie
the tiller down.
Maintenance
Before inspecting, cleaning or
servicing the machine, shut off engine,
wait for all moving parts to come to a
complete stop, disconnect spark plug
wire and move wire away from spark
plug. Remove ignition key on electric
start models.
Failure to follow these instructionscan
resultin serious personalinjuryor prop-
ertydamage.

TILLER LUBRICATION
Proper lubrication of the tiller is an essen-
tial part of your maintenanceprogram.
After every 10 operating hours, oil or
greasethe lubrication points shown in
Figures5-1 and 5-2 and described below.
Usegeneral purpose lubricating oil (#30
weight motor oil is suitable) and a general
purposegrease(metal lubricant is pre-
ferred, if available).
• Removewheelsand cleanwheelshaft
(A, Figure5-I). Apply a thin coating of
greaseto shaft before reinstalling
wheels.

CHECK TIRE AIR PRESSURE
Checkthe air pressure in both tires.
Deflateor inflateboth tires evenly to
between15 and 20 PSI (pounds per
squareinch). Be surethat both tires have
equal air pressure or the unit will pull to
one side.
CHECK FOR OIL LEAKS
Beforeeachuse, checkyour tiller for signs
of an oil leak--usually a dirty, oily accu-
mulation eitheron theunit or on the floor
where it hasbeenparked.
A little seepagearound a cover or oil seal
is usually not a causefor alarm. However,
if the oil drips overnight, then immediate
attention is needed--ignoring a leakcan
result in severetransmission damage.
If a cover leaks,try tightening any loose
screwsor bolts. If the fasteners aretight,
a new gasketor oil sealmay be required.
If the leakisfrom around a shaft and oil
seal,theoil sealprobablyneedsto be
replaced. Seeyour authorized dealeror
contact thefactory for serviceor advice.
IMPORTANT:Neveroperatethetiller if the
transmission is lowon oil. Checkthe oil
levelafter every 30 hours of operationand
whenever there is anyoil leakage.
CHECK HARDWARE
Checkthe unit for looseor missing hard-
ware after every 10 operating hours.
Looseor missing hardwarecan leadto
equipment failure, poor performance, or
oil leaks.
Besureto checkthe threeend cap mount-
ing screws locatedat the rear of thetrans-
mission (Figure5-3). Lift thetine flap to
servicethose screws.

TRANSMISSION GEAROIL SERVICE
Checkthe transmission gear oil levelafter
every 30 hours of operationor whenever
you notice anyoil leak. Operatingthetiller
when thetransmission is low on oil can

Thetransmissiongear oil doesnot needto
be changedunless it hasbeen contami-
natedwith dirt, sand or metal particles.
1. Prop up the left sideof the unit
securely. Removethe left-sidewheel by
removing the wheelmounting hardware.
2. Unscrewthe plastic gear oil fill plug
from thetop of the transmission
(L, Figure2-11).
3. Placea cleanpan below thetransmis-
sion drain plug (Figure 5-4) and remove
the drain plug. The oil will start flowing
out of the drain hole (it mayflow slowly,
especiallyin cold temperatures).

4. Removethetransmission gear oil level
checkplug that is located a few inches
abovethe left-side wheel shaft (N, Figure
2-11).
5. Whenthe oil stops flowing, tilt the
transmission forward to drain oil from the
rear of the transmission.
6. After draining the oil, clean thethreads
of the drain plug, apply a non-hardening,
removablegasketsealantto thethreads,
and securelyreinstall the drain plug.
7. Usea cleanfunnel to slowly add SAE
140 or SAE85W-140weight gear oil (with
an API rating of GL-4 only) to thetrans-
mission. Thetransmission holds approxi-
mately 3-I14 pints (52-54 ounces). Tilt
the tiller slightly backwardsto makesure
the gear oil reachesthe rear (One)end of
the transmission. Stop adding gear oil
when it beginsto flow from the oil level
check hole on the sideof the
transmission.
8. Securely reinstall the oil levelcheck
plug.
9. Securely reinstall the gear oil fill plug
on top of the transmission.
10. Reinstallthe wheel and removethe
prop,
ENGINE OIL SERVICE
Checkthe motor oil levelbefore starting
the engine eachdayand after each5
hours of continuous operation. Running
the enginewhen the oil level is lowwill
quickly ruin the engine.
It is recommendedthat you changethe
motor oil after every I0 hours of operation
and evensooner when operatingin
extremely dirty or dusty conditions.
A. ToChecktheMotor Oil Level:
I. Move the tiller to a levelareaand stop
the engine.
2. Levelthe engineby moving the Depth
RegulatorLever into the second notch
from thetop.
3. Cleanthe areaaround the oil dipstick or
oil fill tube (whichever applies)to prevent
dirt from falling into the crankcase.
4. On engineswith an oil fill tube, remove
the filler cap and add oil (if required) until
it reachesthe top of thetube. Reinstall
the filler cap.
5. On engineswith a dipstick, remove it,
wipe it clean,and reinstall it finger-tight.
Removethe dipstick againand checkthe
reading. Add oil (if required) to bring the
levelto the FULLmark. Donot overfill.
B. ToChangetheMotor Oil:
Changethe motor oil as instructed in the
separateEngineOwner's Manual=
AIR CLEANER SERVICE
Theengine air cleanerfilters dirt and dust
out of the air before it enters thecarbure-
tor. Operatingthe engine with a dirty,
clogged air filter can causepoor perfor-
mance and damageto the engine. Never
operatethe enginewithout the air cleaner
installed. Inspect and servicethe air
cleanermore often if operating in very
dusty or dirty conditions.
Servicethe air cleaneras instructed in the
separateEngineOwner's Manual.
SPARK PLUG SERVICE
Inspectand cleanor replacethe spark
plug after every 100 operating hours or
annually=Cleanthe plug and set the gap
asdescribed in the separateEngine
Owner's Manual.
In someareas, local law requires using
resistor spark plugs to suppress ignition
signals. If the enginewas originally
equippedwith a resistor spark plug, use
the sametype for replacement.
SPARK ARRESTER SCREEN SERVICE
If the engine muffler isequipped witha
spark arrester screen,remove and clean it
according to the time intervalsand
instructions in the separateEngine
Owner's Manual.
ENGINE CLEANING
Theengine must be kept cleanto assure
smooth operationand to prevent damage
from overheating. Referto the separate
EngineOwner's Manualfor specific repair
and cleaning instructions. All inspections
and services must be done with the engine
shut off and cool to the touch.
CARBURETOR/GOVERNOR
CONTROL ADJUSTMENTS
Operators shall not tamper with the
engine governor settings; the governor
controls the maximum safe operating
speed to protect the engine and all
moving parts from damage caused by
overspeed. Authorized service shall be
sought if a problemexists.

WHEEL GEAR CABLE
ADJUSTMENT
Whenthe WheelGearLeveris in DISEN-
GAGE,thewheels will roll freely (free-
wheel). Thewheels should not roll freely
whenthe lever is in ENGAGE.If the
wheels roll freely whenthe WheelGear
Leveris in ENGAGE,thewheel gearcable
needsto be adjusted as described below.
I. Withthe engine shut off and the spark
plug wire disconnected,put the Wheel
GearLeverin ENGAGE.
2. Loosenthe top adjustment nut
(A,Figure5-5) on the wheelgear cable
bracket locatedon the left side rear of the
transmission=

OFF SEASON STORAGE
Whenthe tiller won't be usedfor extended
periods, prepare it for storage asfollows:
1. Cleanthe tiller and engine.
2. Doroutine tiller lubrication (see Tiller
Lubrication) and checkfor loose parts and
hardware(see CheckHardware).
3. Protectthe engine by performing the
engine storage instructions in the separate
EngineOwner's Manual.
NOTE:Besure to protect thefuel lines,
carburetor and fuel tank from gum
deposits by removing fuel or by treating
fuel with a fuel stabilizer (follow engine
manufacturer's recommendations).
4. Storeunit in a clean,dry area.
5. Neverstorethe tiller with fuel in the fuel
tank in an enclosedareawhere gasfumes
could reachan open flame or spark, or
whereignition sourcesare present (space
heaters,hot water heaters,furnaces, etc.).
TINES
Thetines will wearwith useand should be
inspectedat the beginning of eachtilling
seasonand after every 30 operating
hours. Tines canbe replacedindividually
or asa complete set. Never inspector
servicethetines unless the engine is
stopped and the spark plug wire is
disconnected.
NOTE:The tiller hood must be removed to
take off eithera single tine holder or indi-
vidualtines. Thehood is securedto the
transmission housing with two rear bolts
and two front bolts.
Tine Inspection
With use,the tines (Figure5-6) will
become shorter, narrower and pointed.
Badlyworn tines will result in a loss of
tilling depth and reducedeffectiveness
when chopping up and turning under
organic matter.

RemovingandInstalling
TineAssemblies
1. Usea 9/16" socket,6" extension, a
ratchet, and a 9/16" box wrench to loosen
the nut (A, Figure5-7) and bolt (B) that
securethe tine holder to the tine shaft.
2. Usea rubber mallet to tap the tine
holder loose.
3. Slide theLineassembly off the tine
shaft.
4. RepeatSteps l-through-3 aboveto
remove the other Lineassembly.
5. Installing the tine assembly is simply
the reverseof its removal. Besure the
cutting edgesface so they will enterthe
soil first when the tiller is moving
forward- this means the cuttingedges
face toward the operator position.
First be sureto removeany rust, uneven
spots or burrs from the Lineshaft, using
fine sandpaper. Thengreasethe tine shaft
before reinstalling the tine assemblies.
Tighten the hardwarevery securely.
RemovingandInstalling
Individual Tines
1. Usetwo 9/16" boxend wrenchesto
remove the two bolts (C, Figure5-7), and
nuts (D) that secure the tine to its Line

CHECKING AND ADJUSTING
TENSION ON DRIVE BELTS
Follow the belt adjustment instructions
carefully. An incorrectadjustmentcould
result in the ForwardClutch mechanism
engaging too soon. This could cause
loss of tiller control and result in per-
sonalinjuryor propertydamage.
Maintaining correct tension on the drive
belts is important to good tilling perfor-
manceand long belt life. A loosebelt will
slip on the engine andtransmission
pulleysand cause thetines and wheelsto
slow down - or stop completely - even
though the engine is running at full
speed.A loosebelt will also result in pre-
maturewear to the belt.
While checking belttension, also check
for cracks, cuts or frayed edges.A belt
that is in poor condition should be
replaced.
Thetension on a new forward drive belt
should becheckedafter the first two (2)
hoursof operation. Thereafter,checkthe
tension after everyten (10) hours of
operation.
Thereversedrive belt, becauseit is used
more sparingly, will probably not require
an initial tension adjustment until a sig-
nificant number of operating hours has
passed.
To Checkand AdjustTension
onthe ForwardDriveBelt:
1. Checkingfor correct belt tension is the
same asthat described in item 5, Step4:
Attach Forward ClutchRod. Before
checking, shut off the engine,disconnect
the spark plug wire, and allow the engine
and muffler to cool down. If, after follow-
ing the adjustment procedures,you
cannot get the correct gap on the forward
clutch rod adjustment bracket,you will
needto makea secondaryadjustment as
described next.
2. Disconnectthe Forward ClutchRod (A,
Figure5-9) from the swivel plate (B) by
removing the innermost hairpin cotter
(C).
3. Unthreadthe ForwardClutch Rod (in a
counterclockwise direction asviewed
from the front of the unit) until one or
two threads on the rod extend abovethe
rectangular nut (D, Figure5-10) on the
forward clutch bracket.
4. Removethe beltcover.
5. Slip the forward drive belt (E,Figure
5-9) off the engine-drivenforward drive
pulley by pushing it off (awayfrom
engine) with your left hand while pulling
engine starter rope with your right hand.
6. Onthe left side of the unit (from oper-
ator's position) remove the hairpin cotter
from the clevis pin (F, Figure5-I I) that
connects the forward idler arm (G) to the
forward adjustable link (H). Push inward
on the forward idler arm (G)and remove
the clevis pin (F).
7. Thereare two holes in the forward
adjustable link (H, Figure5-11). Push

forward idler arm (G). Securetheclevis
pin withthe hairpin cotter.
