Nortel WLAN—Security Switch 2300 Series Installation and Basic Configuration Guide
Introducing the Nortel WLAN 2300
Series System
This guide shows you how to install a Nortel WLAN—Security Switch (WSS) in a Nortel WLAN 2300 System wireless
LAN (WLAN) and deploy basic IEEE 802.11 wireless service.
Read this guide if you are a network administrator or other person installing WSSs and deploying 802.11 wireless
service in a network.
Nortel WLAN 2300 System
The Nortel WLAN 2300 System is an enterprise-class WLAN solution that seamlessly integrates with an existing wired
enterprise network. The Nortel system provides secure connectivity to both wireless and wired users in large environ-
ments such as office buildings, hospitals, and university campuses and in small environments such as branch offices.
The Nortel WLAN 2300 System fulfills the three fundamental requirements of an enterprise WLAN: It eliminates the
distinction between wired and wireless networks, allows users to work safely from anywhere (secure mobility), and
provides a comprehensive suite of intuitive tools for planning and managing the network before and after deployment,
greatly easing the operational burden on IT resources.
The Nortel WLAN 2300 System consists of the following components:
WLAN Management Software tool suite (WMS)—A full-featured graphical user interface (GUI)
application used to plan, configure, deploy, and manage a WLAN and its users
One or more WLAN—Security Switch (WSS) —Distributed, intelligent machines for managing
user connectivity, connecting and powering Access Points (APs), and connecting the WLAN to the
wired network backbone
Multiple Access Points (APs) —Wireless access points (APs) that transmit and receive radio
frequency (RF) signals to and from wireless users and connect them to a WSS
WLAN 2300 System Software (WSS Software)—The operating system that runs all WSSs and
APs in a WLAN, and is accessible through a command-line interface (CLI), the Web View interface,
or the WLAN Management Software GUI
WLAN Location Engine 2340 (LE 2340)—The Nortel WLAN Location Engine tracks all
powered-on 802.11 devices that register Location information on the network

WSS overview
A Nortel WLAN—Security Switch (WSS) provides mobility and authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA)
services for wireless or wired users. A WSS also controls the operation of Nortel Access Points, which control and
manage IEEE 802.11 operation over the air.
