Chain Link Fence Fabric
How deep do I install my terminal posts
and line posts in the ground?
How deep you install your terminal and line posts
depends on the height of your chain link fabric.
The height of the terminal posts, above ground, will
equal the height of the chain link fabric plus 2". The
height of the line posts, above ground, will equal the
height of the fabric less 2". The height will deter-
mine how deep your post will be set in the ground.
You will need to check with your local village or city
fence installation regulations to determine how deep
the post must be set below the frost line.
The process does not need to change, as long as the process is one that incorporates cement for terminal and
line posts. Holes for terminal posts are typically dug 8" in diameter and 18"- 30" deep; 6" in diameter and
18"-24" deep for line posts. For softer soils, use the deeper depth recommendations. Make sure all posts are
vertical, centered in the hole, and secured with cement.
With pliers, open the top and bottom ends of wire where you wish to terminate or remove
fabric. Unwind the strand and twist through the links until the wire comes out of the fabric,
in a corkscrew manner.
From an end of the fabric, remove a strand of wire. Join the two sections together and
wind the removed wire down through the ends, in a corkscrew manner.
Note: a second strand of wire may have to be removed in order to mesh properly.
Does the installation process change depending on what type of dirt I put my post in?
What if I do not need the entire footage of the chain link fabric?
Can you add or splice fabric together to make it longer?

Q:
Chain Link Fence Fabric
Yes, chain link fences can be installed on uneven terrain. The approach will differ depending on the type of uneven
terrain. For mild variations in terrain, such as gradual sloping, slightly rolling ground, and slightly uneven ground, you
would install the fence normally being aware that there may be slight gaps between the fence bottom and the terrain.
For more extreme terrain variations, for instance a slope that varies by more than 15" per 100' of lateral fence, you
can install chain link fence using a terraced or stepped approach. You can also install chain link fence by doing what is
called a bias cut for slopes. The bias cut approach will require cutting of the chain link mesh to accommodate for the
slope, and increased use of terminal posts and tension bars for each section of fence that has been bias cut.
Can I build a chain link fence on uneven terrain?
