Getting Started
Thank you for purchasing the OfficeConnect
®
Internet Firewall. The Internet Firewall acts as a
secure barrier between the private LAN and the public Internet to protect your network from security
threats on the Internet.
This QuickStart guide assumes that you have an Ethernet network connected to the Internet.
Note: This guide covers initial installation setup instructions for OfficeConnect Internet Firewall 25
and OfficeConnect Internet Firewall DMZ. These instructions are the same for both models. Please
refer to your User Guide for comprehensive setup instructions and hardware specifications.
Below are rear panel descriptions for each OfficeConnect Internet Firewall. The Internet Firewall 25
has LAN and WAN ports. The Internet Firewall DMZ has LAN, WAN and DMZ ports. This
QuickStart Guide will only discuss the LAN and WAN ports. For information on using the DMZ
port of the Internet Firewall DMZ, please refer to your User Guide.

Installing The Internet Firewall
Start by placing your Internet Firewall on a hard, flat surface near your cable modem, DSL modem
or Internet router.
Note: The Internet Firewall 25 front and rear panel views differ from those of the Internet Firewall
DMZ below. The same instructions, however, apply to both models.
Connect the Internet Firewall to Your Network
Connect an Ethernet cable to the Internet Firewall's LAN
port. Connect the other end to your LAN hub.

Apply Power to the Internet Firewall
Attach the power adapter to the power adapter
socket on the Internet Firewall and plug the other end
into a power outlet.
The Internet Firewall's Power LED will flash for
approximately 90 seconds as it performs a series of
diagnostic tests.

Check Link LEDs
The WAN Link LED, the LAN Link LED on the
Internet Firewall should light up.
If the Link LED on the LAN port does not light up
after applying power, press the Uplink/Normal
switch located next to the LAN port.

Connect the Internet Firewall to the Internet
Attach the Internet Firewall's WAN port to your cable
modem, DSL modem or Internet router, using the
Ethernet cable. After you apply power, verify that the
Link LED on the Internet Firewall's WAN port is lit.

Setting Up a Management Station
You can administer your OfficeConnect Internet Firewall from any computer on your LAN. This will
be called the "Management Station."
The Internet Firewall's preconfigured IP address is 192.168.1.254. To contact the Internet Firewall
for the first time, you will need to change the IP address of the management station to
192.168.1.30.
1From the Start menu, choose Settings and
then choose Control Panel.
2Then double-click the Network icon.
3In the Network window's Configuration
tab, select TCP/IP and click the Properties button.
Configure TCP/IP Settings
If the Management Station is running Windows
®
95, 98, 2000, or NT 4.0, do the
following:

Restart your PC for changes to take effect.

Enter 192.168.1.30 in
the IP Address field.
Enter 255.255.255.0 in
the Subnet Mask field.
Select the Specify an IP
address radio button.
Click the IP Address tab.
Replace any existing information
in the Gateway tab with
192.168.1.254.
Click OK and then click OK
again to close the Network
control panel.
A TCP/IP Properties window will appear.

Logging In
Now that you have changed your computer's IP address, you will need to log into the Internet
Firewall.
The Web browser software used must support JAVA
®
and HTTP uploads in order to fully
manage the Internet Firewall. Netscape Navigator
®
4.0 and above, as well as IE 5.0, are
recommended. If you don't have Netscape installed on your computer, you will find it on the
OfficeConnect Internet Firewall CD.

Configure the Internet Firewall
Launch your Web browser.
The Installation Wizard
The first time you log into the Internet Firewall, the Installation Wizard is automatically
launched. The Installation Wizard will guide you through the initial setup.
Note: Certain browser configurations may not invoke the wizard. In this case, you must
login with the User Name "admin" and the Password "password" and follow the
instructions in the manual to configure the Internet Firewall.

Type http://192.168.1.254 into the
Location or Go to field at the top of
your browser.
Please note that you may need IP
addressing details provided by
your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
to complete the Installation Wizard.
Contact your ISP if you are missing
this information.

Please register your OfficeConnect
Internet Firewall on 3Com's Web site at
http://www.3com.com/internetfirewall/.
Registered users can take advantage of
automatic firmware update notification
and a free 30 day subscription to the
Web Site Filter.

Note: Once you have completed the Installation Wizard and restarted the Internet Firewall, you
will be able to manage the Internet Firewall by typing the URL specified in the Wizard's
Congratulations window into a Web browser. You must login with the User Name "admin" and
the Password that you defined in the Installation Wizard.
Configuring Computers on the LAN
Restart the computers on the LAN to complete the update of their network settings.
The Internet Firewall is now functioning and protecting the LAN from Internet-based attacks and
break-ins.
On a Windows computer, do the following:
1From the Start menu, choose Settings.
2Then choose Control Panel.
3Double-click the Network icon.
4Then double-click TCP/IP.
5Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically.
6Click OK and then click OK again.
After the Internet Firewall has restarted, change the network settings on the computers on the LAN.
Each computer on the LAN must be configured to get its IP address dynamically.
After completing the initial configuration, the Installation Wizard will display a page with
instructions to configure the computers on your LAN. Complete either 9A or 9B depending
on answers in the Wizard.
After the Internet Firewall has restarted, change the network settings on the computers on the LAN.
Configure each computer with a static IP address on the same subnet as the Internet Firewall's IP
address.
On a Windows computer, do the following:
1From the Start menu, choose Settings.
2Then choose Control Panel.
3Double-click the Network icon.
4Then double-click TCP/IP.

Click Specify an IP address
.
6Enter an IP address in the range indicated in your
Wizard restart screen in the IP Address field.
7Enter the subnet mask indicated in your Wizard
restart screen in the Subnet Mask field.
8Clear any existing information in the Gateway
tab and add the New gateway as shown in your
Wizard restart screen.
9Click on the DNS Configuration tab and add the
DNS server information provided by your ISP.
10Click OK and then click OK again.
Print this screen. You will need
the information to properly
configure the computers on
your LAN.

DHCP Server Disabled
If you did not enable the Internet Firewall DHCP server, you will see a screen similar to the
following:
Restart the computers on the LAN to complete the update of their network settings.
The Internet Firewall is now functioning and protecting the LAN from Internet-based attacks and
break-ins.

If you enabled the Internet Firewall DHCP server, you will see a screen similar to the following:
