TX Matrix Plus Router Quick Start
TX Matrix Plus Quick Start Description
This Quick Start contains information you need to install and configure the TX Matrix
Plus Router quickly. For complete installation instructions, see the TX Matrix Plus Router
Hardware Guide at http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/hardware/.
WARNING: This Quick Start contains a summary of safety warnings in “TX
Matrix Plus Safety Warnings” on page 33. For a complete list of warnings for
this router, including translations, see the TX Matrix Plus Router Hardware
Guide at http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/hardware/.
The TX Matrix Plus router is a modular, rack-mountable system. One TX Matrix Plus
router can be installed in one standard 23-in. wide, 78-in. high, EIA telco rack. The TX
Matrix Plus router is shipped in a wooden crate. A wooden pallet forms the base of the
crate. TheTX Matrix Plus chassis is bolted to this pallet. The shipping crate contains:
One accessory box (the box to which this Quick Start is taped)
One Juniper Networks TX Matrix Plus router
One Quick Start (this document)
One tool kit
Mounting hardware
Cable management system
Step 1: Prepare the Site
TX Matrix Plus Rack-Mounting Requirements on page 3
Tools Required to Install the TX Matrix Plus Router on page 4
TX Matrix Plus Rack-Mounting Requirements
The TX Matrix Plus router can be installed in many types of racks. Follow these guidelines:
The rack rails must be spaced widely enough to accommodate the TX Matrix Plus
router chassis's external dimensions: 52.0 in. (132.1 cm) high, 36.2 in. (91.9 cm) deep,
and 21.4 in. (54.4 cm) wide. The center-mounting brackets and front-mounting flanges
extend the width to 23 in. (58.4 cm) racks.
If the horizontal spacing between the rails is wider than the center-mounting brackets
or front-mounting flanges, use approved wing devices to narrow the opening between
the rails as required.
The rack must be strong enough to support the weight of the fully configured TX Matrix
Plus router, up to 925 lb (420 kg).
We recommend that you install one TX Matrix Plus router in its own dedicated rack.

TX Matrix Plus Quick Start Description
For service personnel to remove and install hardware components, there must be
adequate space at the front and back of the TX Matrix Plus router. Allow at least 30 in.
(61.0 cm) both in front of and behind the TX Matrix Plus router.
The rack must have an adequate supply of cooling air.

TX Matrix Plus Router Quick Start
Install the Open-Frame Rack Mounting Shelf
Before mounting the chassis in an open-frame rack, you must first install the open-frame
rack mounting shelf.
To install the open-frame rack mounting shelf, (see Figure 4 on page 11):
1. On the rear of each rack rail, partially insert a mounting screw into the highest hole
specified in Table 3 on page 9 for the open-frame rack mounting shelf.
2. Install the open-frame rack mounting shelf on the rack. Hang the shelf over the
mounting screws using the keyhole slots located near the top of the shelf flanges.
3. Partially insert screws into the open holes in the flanges of the open-frame rack
mounting shelf.
4. Tighten all the screws completely.

NOTE: For detailed instructions on removing TX Matrix Plus router
components, see the TX Matrix Plus Router Hardware Guide.
To remove the components from the TX Matrix Plus router:
1. Slide each component out of the chassis evenly so that it does not become stuck or
damaged.
2. Label each component as you remove it so you can reinstall it in the correct location.
3. Immediately store each removed component in an electrostatic bag.
4. Do not stack removed components. Lay each one on a flat surface.

Install the TX Matrix Plus Router Using a Lift
CAUTION: Before installing the TX Matrix Plus router:
Read the safety information in TX Matrix Plus Installation Safety Guidelines.
Ensure that a mechanical lift and Phillips (+) screwdriver, number 2 are
available for the installation. Because of the TX Matrix Plus router's size
and weight—up to 925 lb (420 kg) depending on configuration—you must
use a lift to install the TX Matrix Plus router.

TX Matrix Plus Router Quick Start
Have a qualified technician verify that the rack is strong enough to support
the TX Matrix Plus router's weight and is adequately supported at the
installation site.
Ensure that the rack is in its permanent location and is secured to the
building.
Ensure that the installation site allows adequate clearance for both airflow
and maintenance.

TX Matrix Plus Router Quick Start
To install the TX Matrix Plus router using a lift (see Figure 7 on page 16):
1. Load the TX Matrix Plus router onto the lift, making sure the router rests securely on
the mechanical lift.
CAUTION: Do not lift the TX Matrix Plus router using the handles on the
sides of the chassis. Use these handles only to help position the TX Matrix
Plus router.
2. Using the lift, position the TX Matrix Plus router in front of the rack, centering it in front
of the mounting shelf.
3. Lift the chassis slightly above the surface of the mounting shelf, and position it as
close as possible to the shelf.
4. Carefully slide the TX Matrix Plus router onto the mounting shelf, so that the bottom
of the chassis and the mounting shelf overlap by approximately 2 inches.
5. With four people pushing on the front-mounting flanges, slide the TX Matrix Plus
router onto the mounting shelf until the center-mounting brackets (open-frame racks)
or front-mounting flanges (four-post racks) contact the rack rails. The shelves ensure
that the holes in the center-mounting brackets and the front-mounting flanges of the
chassis align with the holes in the rack rails.
6. Move the lift away from the rack.
7. Install a mounting screw into each of the mounting holes aligned with the rack, starting
from the bottom.
8. Visually inspect the alignment of the TX Matrix Plus router. If the router is installed
properly in the rack, all the mounting screws on one side of the rack should be aligned
with the mounting screws on the opposite side, and the router should be level.
