ELECTRIC AIR HEATER
FOR 3X400 V AND 3X440 V
INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
GENERAL
The electric air heater is equipped with tubular heating elements. The
air heater is available in variants without or with built-in thyristor and
stepping switch as well as with the output divided into equal steps or
binary steps.
It is permissible to install air handling units with electric air heater
in dry rooms where there is no risk of fire or explosion and in such
garages where the pouring of petrol does not normally occur. Besides
the variant for installation in dwellings, a variant conforming to degree
of protection IP55 is available.
DESIGN DATA
Max. permissible air temperature downstream of the heater: 40 °C.
The air heater is equipped with two mutually independent overheat
protections: one that automatically resets and another with manual
reset that open the operating circuit of the electric air heater if the
overheat temperature is exceeded.
The air heater conforms to the provisions of EN61000-6-2,
EN61000-6-3 and EN61000-3-11. It must not be installed as an in-duct
air heater.
INSTALLATION
Make sure that the direction of airflow through the heater agrees
with the arrow fixed to the casing. The air flow must be horizontal or
vertical upwards.
ELECTRICAL WIRING
1. The electrical installation work shall be carried out by a qualified
electrician only.

2. The partic ulars of the operating voltage, output and overheat
protection etc. of the electric air heater are specified in the wiring
diagram supplied with the air heater and on the identification plate
on the cover of the heater.
3. The air heater must be connected to the mains supply by means of
a fixed cable. The length of the cable shall be adjusted to the
relevant location and be rated for the ambient temperature.
4. The system must not permit switching on the power supply to the
air heater without first or simultaneously starting the fan that
conveys air to it.
5. The system must not permit switching off the power supply to the
relevant fan without first switching off the power supplied to the air
heater. For outputs in excess of 30 kW, a post-air discharge period
3 minutes is recommended before the fan stops. This ensures that
the overheat protections will not trip due to subsequent heat build-up.
6. All-pole switching with a minimum distance of 3 mm between open
contacts must be provided in the fixed installation.

MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION
Under normal conditions the EQEK air heater does not require any
maintenance.
Possible loss of heat may be due to an interruption in the operating
circuit.
The supply air fan will interlock the air heater’s operation circuit.
The supply air fan continues to operate after the ventilation system
has been switched off in order to cool the heating elements in the air
heater. This post-cooling period can be set on the time relay. The air
heater with built-in control and stepping switch is equipped with two or
several mutually independent overheat protections, B and C.
C opens the operating circuit of the air heater if the temperature
exceeds 120 °C. The supply air fan continues to operate to cool the
heating elements after which it stops. C must be manually reset.
Overheat protection B opens the operating circuit of the air heater if
the control temperature exceeds 70 °C and resets itself automatically
when the temperature drops again.
The installation is wired so that overheat protection C opens the
operating circuit to the contactors for the air heater and to the
contactor for the supply air fan.
Caution!
The heating elements are still hot after you have
switched off the unit. You risk getting burned
if you touch them. Switch off the unit well in
advance before cleaning.
REMOTE INDICATION OF ALARMS
Alarm functions with remote indication from the manually resettable
overheat protection C can be entered in the automatic equipment of
the air heater.
OPERATION
1. The ventilation system is started either manually by means of a
switch or automatically with a timer. The fan starts and the air
heater is gradually switched in by means of the stepping switch.
2. If the temperature in the elements reaches the limit temperature
preset in overheat protection B (70 °C), the heat heater is switched
off. The heater is automatically switched in again when the temper-
ature has dropped. If due to a malfunction in the ventilation system,
the temperature rises so high that overheat protection C trips, the
fan stops and the air heater is switched off. C must be reset manu-
ally after the malfunction has been remedied.
3. In order to prevent cold air from being discharged into the ven-
tilation system in the event of a malfunction in the air heater or its
control equipment, a thermostat should be installed in the supply
air path to stop the air handling unit if the temperature (approx.
+10 °C) drops below the preset limit, after atime delay of approx. 10
minutes from the time when the ventilation system started up.
