Tips for Uninstalling
and Re-using the RAID Controller
If you have removed a RAID controller from an iSCSI Storage Appliance and want to re-use it in a different server
environment, follow the steps in this guide to replace the Adaptec OnTarget-specific firmware and reset the RAID controller
to its default settings.

Storage Manager™ User’s Guide for Internal RAID
Step 1 Install the RAID Controller
1 Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cord. Open the cabinet, following the
manufacturer’s instructions.
2 Select an available PCI/PCIe/PCI-X expansion slot thats compatible with your RAID controller
and remove the slot cover.
Caution:
Touch a grounded metal object before handling the RAID controller.
3
Insert the RAID controller into the PCI expansion slot and press down gently but firmly until it
clicks into place. When installed properly, the RAID controller should appear level with the
expansion slot
.
4 Secure the bracket using the retention device (for instance, a screw or lever) supplied with your
computer.
5 Connect your computer’s disk activity LED cable to the LED connector on the RAID controller.
Ensure that the positive lead of the LED cable (usually a red wire or a wire marked with a red
stripe) is attached to pin 1.
6 Optional—Connect your RAID controller’s I2C connector (not available on all models) to an I2C
connector on an internal backplane or enclosure, using an I2C cable.
7 Prepare, install, and connect your internal disk drives. If you are not installing internal disk
drives, skip to the next step.
Note:
If you need help installing and connecting disk drives,
refer to the
RAID Controller Installation and User’s Guide
.
8
When all internal disk drives have been installed and connected, close your
computer
cabinet, and reattach the power
cord.
9 Prepare and connect any external disk drives, if required.
Note:
If you remove a disk drive from an iSCSI Storage Appliance, you should initialize it before re-using it in another server
environment. Adaptec provides two tools for this task: the Adaptec RAID Configuration Utility and Adaptec Storage Manager. Refer
to the Adaptec RAID Controller Installation and User’s Guide for more information.
Step 2

Step 3

Step 2 Download the Latest Firmware
Download the latest Adaptec RAID controller firmware images from the Adaptec Web site at www.adaptec.com. Image files
typically come in sets of two or more and have a .ufi file extension.
Step 3 Update the Firmware and Reset the Default Settings
To update the firmware and reset the RAID controller to its default settings, you can use either of these methods:
Using the Adaptec Storage Manager software—Requires that you have the Adaptec Storage Manager Installation CD or
have the latest version of Adaptec Storage Manager installed on the same computer as the RAID controller. See below.
Using two utilities included with the RAID controller
Requires that you have the Adaptec RAID Controller
Installation CD
and
have the Adaptec RAID Controller Command Line Utility (ARCCONF) installed on the same
computer as the RAID controller. See page 3.
Using Adaptec Storage Manager
Before you begin, ensure that:
You have the Adaptec Storage Manager Installation CD (required for computers where the operating system is not yet
installed), or
You have installed the latest version of Adaptec Storage Manager on the same computer as the RAID controller. (You can
download and install the latest version of Adaptec Storage Manager from the Adaptec Web site at www.adaptec.com.)
Ensure that you have also installed the driver for the RAID controller.
1 Open Adaptec Storage Manager, or boot from the Adaptec Storage Manager Installation CD.
2 In the Enterprise View (left side of screen), right-click Internal RAID, click Update controller images, then follow the
on-screen instructions to update the RAID controller firmware.
When the update is complete, click OK. Then, restart the computer to activate the new firmware images.
Note:
The feature set supported by the RAID controller may be different after the firmware has been updated. Refer to the
Adaptec RAID Controller Installation and User’s Guide for more information.
3 In the Enterprise View, right-click the RAID controller, then click Enable copy back mode (a toggle switch) to change
the RAID controller’s copyback setting to enabled.
4 Continue with Next Steps on page 4.
3
Using the RAID Controller Utilities
Note: This task can’t be completed on computers where the operating system is not installed. If you have not yet installed an
operating system on your computer, follow the instructions in Using Adaptec Storage Manager on page 2 instead.
Before you begin, ensure that:
You have the Adaptec RAID Controller Installation CD, and
You have installed the latest version of ARCCONF on the same computer as the RAID controller. (You can download
and install the latest version of ARCCONF from the Adaptec Web site at www.adaptec.com.)
You have at least one bootable MS-DOS floppy disk for each .ufi firmware file that you downloaded.
Updating the Firmware with the Adaptec Flash Utility
Note: You will need the Adaptec RAID Controller Installation CD and at least two bootable MS-DOS floppy disks to complete this
task. (You can’t create a bootable floppy disk using Windows 2000.)
1 Create a bootable MS–DOS floppy disk and copy these files to it:
AFU.exe (located on the Adaptec RAID Controller Installation CD)
Axxxx01.ufi (one of the downloaded firmware files)
where xxxx is the model number of your controller.
Note:
Most controller model numbers have a suffix (for example Adaptec 4800SAS). Check that the .ufi file is the correct file
for your controller before copying.
2 Create additional bootable MS–DOS floppy disks and copy each additional Axxxx0x.ufi file to a separate floppy disk.
(Some RAID controllers have two UFI files; some have four. Each goes onto its own bootable floppy disk.)
3 Shut down your operating system and reboot to DOS from a bootable MS-DOS floppy disk or from a DOS partition on
a bootable drive. (You can use a disk drive connected to the RAID controller you are updating.)
4 At the DOS command prompt, type
AFU
with no arguments.
The AFU’s main menu is displayed.
5 Select Select Controllers, then select the Adaptec RAID controller to be updated (flashed).
6 Select Select an Operation.
7 Select Update, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the task.
8 Restart your computer before trying to use the RAID controller again. (
You can not use your RAID controller while you are
flashing its firmware.)
Note:
The feature set supported by the RAID controller may be different after the firmware has been flashed. Refer to the
Adaptec RAID Controller Installation and User’s Guide for more information.
Enabling Copyback with ARCCONF
1 Start ARCCONF by entering the command for your operating system, where
<
install_dir*
>
is the directory where the
utility is installed:
2 Type this command, where
<Controller#>
is the controller number, then press Enter:
ARCCONF COPYBACK <Controller#> ON
3 Exit ARCCONF, then continue with Next Steps on page 4.
Windows
c:\<install_dir*>\ARCCONF.exe
Linux
/usr/<install_dir*>/ARCCONF
NetWare
load ARCCONF
UnixWare/OpenServer
/opt/RaidMan/ARCCONF
Solaris
/usr/StorMan/ARCCONF
4
Next Steps
Continue by installing an operating system and the RAID controller drivers—or just the RAID controller drivers, if an
operating system is already installed—as described for your RAID controller and operating system in the Adaptec RAID
Controller Installation and User’s Guide, available on the Adaptec Web site at www.adaptec.com.
Once the installation is complete, the RAID controller is ready to use.
