Introduction
Welcome tothe world of CB radiocommunication. Your Uniden PRO340XL
representsthe mostadvanced portable radio ever designedfor use inthe
Citizens Band RadioService. This powerfulunitoperates on any of the 40 AM
frequencies authorized by the Spectrum ManagementAgency ( SMA ).
Amongitsmanyfeatures,thePRO340XLincludes:
. Superheterodynecircuitryto enhance receiverquality.
. Phase Locked Loop Synthesizer techniques to assure precise
frequency control.
. Flexible operation that allows you to power the radio with 8 AA alkaline
batteries, 10rechargeable AA nickel-cadmiumbatteries (batteriesnot
included),or fromyour vehicle battery.
. Connection for an optional nickel-cadmium battery charger.
This radio has beentype accepted andfully certified bythe SMA.
WARNING
The Citizens Band RadioCommunicationService (CBRS)is underthe
jurisdiction of the Australian Spectrum Management Agency (SMA).
Any adjustment oralteration whichwill changethe performance of the
transceiver's original SMA type acceptance is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
Replacement or Substitution of poweror frequency de~ermining
components e.g. Crystals, Transistors, IC's, Diodes,or any part of a
unique nature, with parts otherthan those recommended by Uniden
may causeviolation to the SMAtype acceptancetechnical requirement.
Licensing Requirements
Before usingyour transceiver, you must obtain a Citizens Band Radio License
from the Spectrum Management Agency (SMA).Application forms and
brochures relatingto CBRS are availableat your nearest SMA office. Mail the
completed application form and the appropriatefee to the Communications
Manager of SMA, inthe State or Territory inwhich the station will be operated.

Power
ThePRO340XLisdesigned to operatewith maximum 12volt DC power. Power
can be supplied through 10 AA, 1.2volt, rechargeable nickel-cadmium
batteries; 8AA, 1.5volt alkaline batteries;or through the supplied cigarette
lighter powercord when connected to a vehicle's 12volt negativegroundpower
system.
Installing Batteries
WARNING: Do not mix alkaline batteries with nickel-cadmiumbatteries.

Note: Toinsure circuit continuity,use the twobattery spacers supplied.
1. Slide the cover off the back of the PRO340XL.
2. Insert 8 alkaline batteries into the battery compartmentas shown.
Note: Be sure to insert each battery with the proper polarity, as marked in
the battery compartment.

Note: Whenthebatteries become weak, the BATTLOW LED will light.
Be sure to replace the batteries as soon as possible. Youcan
preserve battery power by selecting the "LOW"position on the
HI/LOWswitch. The "LOW"setting has asubstantially shorter
transmission range. (See the Operationsection.)

Connecting the Cigarette Lighter Power Cord
Using the Cigarette Lighter PowerCord wheneveryou are operating the
PRO340XLin avehicle saves the radio's internalbattery life.
IMPORTANT: TheCigarette Lighter Power Cordis designed to be used
ONLY with negative ground vehicles. Do not attempt to
operate the unit with the power cord connected to a positive
ground vehicle.
To connect the Cigarette Lighter PowerCord:
1. Connectthe power cord to the POWERconnection onthe side of the
radio.
2. Plugthe powercord into the cigarette lighter of your vehicle.
Note: Power is disconnectedfrom the radio's battery compartment when
using the cigarettelighterpower cord.

Operation
Beforeoperating the PRO340XL:
1. Be surethatthe power source and antenna are properlyconnected.
2. Turn the unit on by sliding the power switch upto the ON position.

Receive
1. Use the UplDownchannel keys to select any ofthe 40channels. Press
once to change one channelat a time. Pressand holdto rapidly change
channels.
2. Setthe VOLUMEcontrol to a comfortablelistening level.
3. Adjust the SQUELCHcontrol to eliminate background noiseduring the
absenceof a signal. MoveSQUELCHto the rightuntilthe noise
disappears (nosignal should be present). Leavethe control at this
setting. The receiverwill remainquiet until a signal is actually received.
Note: Do notadvance thecontrol too far, or some weakersignals will not
be heard.
Transm it
1. Set the HIILOWSwitch.
. Inthe 'HIli (4 watt) position,the unittransmits at maximum'outputpower
and achieves maximumrange.
. Inthe "LOW' (1watt) position,transmission output power (range) is
substantially reduced; but, the battery life will be increased.
For maximum battery life, select the "LOW' position. This switch does
not affect the reception range.
2. If the channel is clear, press the Push-Ta-TalkButtonon the side of the unit.
Be sure to speak clearly into the microphone.
IMPORTANT: All channels, except channel9, may be used for normal
communication. Channel 9 is reserved for emergencycommunications
involving the immediate safety of individuals or the protection of property.

Care and Maintenance
The PRO340XLis designed to giveyou years of trouble-free service. There are
no user-serviceableparts insideand exceptfor the batteries, or the fuse inside
the cigarette lighter plug, no maintenance is required,
Note: Do not expose the unit to moisture. Rain, dew,road splash,or
other liquids may damage theinternal components.
Replacing the Cigarette Lighter Plug Fuse
Thecigarettelighterplugcontainsa 2-amperefuseto protectitfrompowersurges.
To replace ablown fuse:
1. Grasp the cigarette lighter plug's two metal contacts and squeeze.
Unscrew the cap counterclockwise.

2. Removethe fuse and replace itwith the sametype.
3. Replacethe cap by graspingthe plug's two metalcontacts and squeezing'
them while twisting the cap backon. Makesure the cap istightly secured.

Recharging Batteries
You can recharge nickel-cadmiumbatterieswhile they are installed in the
PRO340XL.Use the included Cigarette Lighter PowerCord or an optional AC
Adaptor. Be sure to observe the polarityof the Adaptor beforeconnecting itto
the radio.
Note: ThePRO340XLwill not operatewhile thebatteries are
recharging.
WARNING
Do notattempt to charge alkalinebatteries inthis radio. Make sure you
have installed 10 rechargeable nickel-cadmiumbatteries before
connecting powerto the charge connection.

Usingthe Cigarette Lighter PowerCord
IMPORTANT: The CigaretteLighter Power Cordis designed to be used
ONLY with negative ground vehicles. Do not attempt to
charge the batteries withthepower cord connected to a
positiveground vehicle.
1. Plugone endof the Cigarette Lighter PowerCord intothe CHARGE
connectionon the side ofthe PRO340XL.
2. Plugthe other end of the Cigarette Lighter Power Cord intothe v~hicle's
cigarette lightersocket.
Usingan optional AC Adaptor
IMPORTANT: Make sure you have an AC Adaptor that supplies 12VDC
power with the correctpolarity before connectingit to the
radio.
1. Plugone end of the AC Adaptor intothe CHARGEconnection onthe side
of the PRO340XL.
2. Connect the other end of the AC Adaptor to an AC power source.
Note: Forinformation on time required to rechargebatteries, consult the
manufacturer ofthe battery orAC Adaptor.

troubleshooting suggestions listed below. Ifyou cannot get satisfactory results,

Servicing Your CB
If you determine that service is necessary.contact your local dealer or return
the unit in its original carton to Uniden- Service Division. Ship the item with a
brief and concise description of the problem,your name, address, a telephone
number where you can be reached during working hours and a copy of the
original purchase receiptto the address listed in the warranty (atthe end of
this manual).
Technical information,diagrams, and charts are available upon request. It is
the user's responsibilityto see that this radio is operating at all times in
accordance with the SMA Citizens Band Radio Service regulations. We highly
recommendthat you consult a qualified radiotelephonetechnicianfor service
and alignment ofthis radio.
When orderingparts, please specifythe correct model numberand serial
numberof this radio.

ELEMENTS OF WARRANTY: Uniden warrants to the original retail owner for the
duration of this warranty, its PRO340XL CB Radio (hereinafter referred to as the
Product), to be free from defects in materials and craftmanship with only the limitations
or exclusions set out below.
WARRANTY
DURATION: This warrantyto the originalIIseronly shallterminate and be
of no further effect Two (2) years after the date of original retail sale. This warranty will be
deemed invalid if the product is (A) Damaged or not maintained as reasonable and
necessary, (B) Modified, altered, or used as part of any conversation kits,
subassemblies, or any configurations not sold by Uniden, (C) Improperly installed, (D)
Repaired by someone other than an authorized Uniden Repair Agent for a defect of
malfunction covered by this warranty, (E) Used in conjunction with any equipment or
parts or as part of a system not manufactured by Uniden, (F) Installed, or serviced by
anyone other than authorized Uniden Repair Agent, (G) Where the Serial Number label of
the product has been removed or damaged beyond recognition.
PARTS COVERED: This warranty covers for 2 years; the PRO340XL Portable
Transceiver unit only. All other accessories like Cigarette Lighter Power Cord, Flexible
Antenna, Belt Clips, BatterySpacersare coveredfor 90 days.
STATEMENT OF REMEDY: In the event that the product does not conform to this
warranty at anytime while this warranty is in effect, the warrantor will at its discretion,
repair the defect or replace the product and return it to you without charge for parts or
service. THIS
WARRANlY DOES NOT COVER OR PROVIDE FOR THE
REIMBURSEMENT OR PAYMENT OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL
DAMAGES.
WARRANTY CARD: If a warranty card had been included with this product, then please
