2. Procedure for long-term storage
This is necessary to keep the printer in optimal condition and avoid potential damage
that can be easily prevented. If the printer is left powered off for 12 hours or more,
attach a head protection cover to the carriage to protect the print head. For more
information, see "Attaching the head protection cover".
For long-term storage (powered off for 2 weeks or longer) or shipping, replace the ink
with cleaning solution and attach a head protection cover to the carriage. For more
information, see "Preparing Your Printer for Storage/Shipping".

3. Attaching the head protection cover
Installing the head protection cover will protect the print head from damage even
when the automatic maintenance function is not working because the power is off.
IMPORTANT! Turn off the printer before attaching the head protection cover.
Guide to the head protection cover
1. Left side (single frame on the top front)
2. Caps
3. Right side (two frames on the top)
1.Put a tray or paper under the head.
The tray or paper prevents solid ink, lint, and cleaning liquid from entering the

machine.
2. Move the head protection cover under the carriage.
We recommend that the head protection cover be moved under the carriage by
standing on the right side of the printer, in front of the maintenance unit, and passing
it through the guide rods from above.
To do so, hold the right side of the head protection cover (the side with the two claws
at the top) as shown below to make it easier to attach the cover to the carriage. Note
the orientation of the head protection cover.
If the carriage is in a position where it is difficult to pass through the head protection
cover when working, move the carriage slowly by hand to ensure a gap for the head
protection cover to pass through.
RICOH Ri 1000
Procedure for long-term storage

After passing through the guide rod, move the head protection cover to the bottom of
the carriage, keeping it parallel to the guide rod and carriage so that the cap is
horizontal. At this time, please keep the cap surface of the head protection cover
facing toward the upper carriage.
3. Align the left and right corners of the head protection cover with the
carriage corners.
The places to align are the right and left sides of the carriage, respectively, as shown
below.
In doing so, be careful of the orientation of the head protection cover.
[Right side]
RICOH Ri 1000
Procedure for long-term storage
9 / 22
[Left side]
When installing the head protection cover standing on the right side of the printer, in
front of the maintenance unit, the two claws can be seen from the person installing
the cover as shown below.
Align the two corners of the head protection cover, represented by the red and blue
circles, with the corners of the carriage.
The left side of the two claws of the head protection cover should be aligned so that
they are in contact against the corners of the carriage. The right-hand claw, on the
other hand, should be lifted up and aligned against the corner of the carriage so that it

rests against the corner of the carriage.
The pawl on the side of the carriage that is not visible because it is in the shadow of
the carriage should be handled with the head protection cover parallel to the guide rod
and carriage, so that when the two pawls on the right side of the head protection
cover are aligned with the mounting position, they are simultaneously aligned with the
mounting position. the two pawls on the right side of the head protection cover can be
aligned to the mounting position at the same time
4.Take the filled cleaning liquid with the head protection cover under the
carriage to prevent spillage
If cleaning solution spills when the head protection cover is pushed up, wipe it off.
After attaching the head protection cover, observe it from the front and check if the
head protection cover is not tilted.
If it is tilted, a gap may be visible between the carriage and the cap inside the head
protection cover, as shown in the NG image below. In this case, perform the
RICOH Ri 1000
Procedure for long-term storage

installation again.
Check if the claw on the side that is not visible in the shadow of the carriage when the
head protection cover is installed is properly engaged.
Removing the head protection cover
1.Check the carriage position.
If the carriage is in a position that makes it difficult to remove the head protection
cover, move the carriage slowly by hand.
2.Open the two pawls on the right side of the head protection cover
outward and remove the pawls from the carriage.
Make sure that the inside of the cap is filled with cleaning liquid.
RICOH Ri 1000
Procedure for long-term storage
12 / 22
3.Remove the head protection covers from the carriage by pushing it
downwards.
The claw on the left side of the head protection cover can be removed at the same
time when the head protection cover is pushed down.
4.Remove the head protection covers from between the guide rods.
When removing the head protection cover from between the guide rods, it is
recommended to hold the flat cable with the hand opposite to the hand holding the
head protection cover while removing the head protection cover, since the head
protection cover tends to get caught on the flat cable.
RICOH Ri 1000
Procedure for long-term storage

If it is difficult to check the position of the head, use a mirror to check the position.
Installation/removal of head protection cover with cleaning
solution
IMPORTANT! If the amount of cleaning solution to be added to the head protection
cover is not sufficient, or if cleaning solution spills out during installation, the head will
not be protected correctly.
1.Place a tray or paper under the print head.
Paper to prevent ink, lint, and cleaning fluids from entering the machine.
RICOH Ri 1000
Procedure for long-term storage
14 / 22
2.Fill all caps of the head protection cover with cleaning solution using a
dropper.
Secure approximately 2 ml of cleaning solution from the bottle of cleaning solution.
Place approximately 1 ml of cleaning solution, secured with a dropper, inside the cap.
After adding approximately 1 ml, pour the remaining cleaning solution in the dropper
one drop at a time into the cap until the liquid level is raised slightly above the rim of
the cap, as shown in the illustration below, when viewed from the side.
This should be done for all caps.
If bubbles are generated, please use a dropper to suck out the bubbles, as they may
not protect the head properly.
3.Move the cleaning solution in the head protection cover under the
RICOH Ri 1000
Procedure for long-term storage
15 / 22
carriage so as not to spill it.
When the head protection cover is tilted, the angle at which the cleaning liquid inside
the cap spills out is "left to right: approx. 30 degrees" and "front to back: approx. 10
degrees" when the head protection cover is filled with cleaning liquid to the target
state.
Therefore, when installing the head protection cover, move it carefully so that it tilts
to the left or right to some extent, but not to the front or rear.
4.Push the head protection cover up until it clicks into place.
Wipe up any cleaning solution spilled when the head protection cover is pushed up.

How to check the condition of the installation of the head
protection cover with cleaning solution
1.Install the head protection cover filled with cleaning solution.
See Attaching the head protection cover for installation instructions.
2.Remove the head protection cover about 5 minutes after installation.
See Removing the head protection cover for removal instructions.
3.Perform visual checks.
If the cleaning solution was installed correctly without spilling, the cleaning solution in
the cap appears discolored white or colored. As shown in the photo below, if the caps
on the left and right ends are discolored, the center cap is also installed correctly.
However, if the cleaning solution in all caps is not discolored, or if only the caps on
either end are discolored, they may not be installed correctly. If this is the case, install
the head protection cover again to check if it is installed correctly.

5. Prevention of habituation of bellows
1.When stored for a long period of time, the bellows at the bottom of the platen
may become distorted, causing problems when restarting. For this reason, please take
the following measures so that the bellows does not become peculiar.
(If you want to turn off the power, please do the following after turning off the
power.)
