1.1 Function of this document
These operating instructions contain the information needed during the life cycle of the
mult
iple light beam safety device.
Operating instructions of the multiple light beam safety device must be made available
to all people who work with the device.
Please read these operating instructions carefully and make sure that you understand
the content fully before working with the multiple light beam safety device.

2 Safety information
2.1 General safety notes

2.2 Intended use
The deTem4 LT Muting A/P multiple light beam safety device is an electro-sensitive pro‐
t
ective device (ESPE) and is suitable for the following applications:
Single-sided access protection
The deTem4 LT Muting A/P multiple light beam safety device must only be used within
t
he limits of the prescribed and specified technical data and operating conditions at all
times.
Any instance of improper use, incorrect modification, or manipulation of the deTem4 LT
Muting A/P multiple light beam safety device shall void any warranty provided by SICK
AG; furthermore, SICK AG shall not accept any responsibility or liability for any resulting
damage and consequential damage.
2.3 Improper use
The multiple light beam safety device works as an indirect protective measure and can‐
no
t provide protection from pieces thrown from application nor from emitted radiation.
Transparent objects are not detected.
Among others, the multiple light beam safety device is not suitable for the following
applications:
Outdoors
Underwater
In explosion-hazardous areas
At altitudes over 3,000 m above sea level
In environments with increased levels of ionizing radiation
2.4 Requirements for the qualification of personnel
The protective device must be configured, installed, connected, commissioned, and ser‐
v
iced by qualified safety personnel only.
Project planning
For project planning, a person is considered competent when he/she has expertise and
experience in the selection and use of protective devices on machines and is familiar
with the relevant technical rules and national work safety regulations.
Mechanical mounting, electrical installation, and commissioning
For the task, a person is considered qualified when he/she has the expertise and expe‐
rience in the relevant field and is sufficiently familiar with the application of the protec‐
tive device on the machine to be able to assess whether it is in an operationally safe
state.

Configuration
F
or configuration, a person is considered competent when he/she has the expertise
and experience in the relevant field and is sufficiently familiar with the application of
the protective device on the machine that he/she can assess its work safety aspects.
Operation and maintenance
For operation and maintenance, a person is considered competent when he/she has
the expertise and experience in the relevant field and is sufficiently familiar with the
application of the protective device on the machine and has been instructed by the
machine operator in its operation.

3 Product description
3.1 Setup and function
Overview
T
he multiple light beam safety device deTem4 LT Muting A/P is an electro-sensitive pro‐
tective device (ESPE) consisting of a sender and receiver unit (hereinafter referred to as
the active unit) and a deflection unit (hereinafter referred to as the passive unit). The
sender and receiver unit is located in the same housing.
The hazardous area is protected by the infrared light beams between the active unit
and the passive unit on the opposite side. The infrared beams of the active unit hit the
passive unit and are sent back to the active unit with a parallel offset.
When one or more light beams are completely interrupted, the protective device reports
the interruption in the light path to the secure output signal switching devices (OSSDs)
by a signal change. The machine or its control must safely analyze the signals (for
example using a safe control or safety relays) and stop the dangerous state.
The deTem4 LT Muting A/P multiple light beam safety device is used for muting applica‐
tions, i.e. for temporarily bridging the electro-sensitive protective device. Muting arms
are mounted on the active and passive units for this purpose. Two muting sensors are
attached to each muting arm for the active unit, and two reflectors on each muting arm
for the passive unit. The muting sensors perform the task of distinguishing between
people and materials. This enables materials to be transported into or out of a haz‐
ardous area without interrupting the work process. Depending on the number of muting
arms and the muting sensors attached to them, it is possible to perform either exit
monitoring or entry/exit monitoring.

Beam separation and number of beams
T
he beam separation is the distance between two adjacent light beams, measured
from the center of one beam to the center of the next.
Scanning range
The scanning range is the maximum dimension of the light path between active and
passive units.
The scanning range is reduced by using a weld spark guard.

3.2.2 Beam coding
Depending on its configuration, the multiple light beam safety device operates with 1 of
2 be
am codings: code 1 or code 2. In order to avoid mutual interference between 2
neighboring multiple light beam safety devices, one can be operated with code 1 and
the other with code 2.
3.2.3 Alignment aid
Diagnostic LEDs are installed in the active unit of the multiple light beam safety device.
For a simple alignment of the passive unit, diagnostic LEDs 1 … 8 indicate the align‐
ment quality once the device has been switched on.
The alignment quality of the beams close to the system connection are indicated via
the diagnostic LEDs 1 … 4. The alignment quality of the beams distant from the system
connection are indicated via the diagnostic LEDs 5 … 8.
3.2.4 Restart interlock
The multiple light beam safety device has an integrated restart interlock. The function
c
an be configured during commissioning.
A restart interlock prevents the machine from starting again once the protective device
has been triggered. First, the operator must press a reset pushbutton to return the pro‐
tective device to monitoring status. Then, in a second step, the operator can restart the
machine.
The reset pushbutton can be connected locally at the system connection or at the con‐
nection for the reset/override pushbutton.
3.2.5 Application diagnostic output
The multiple light beam safety device has an application diagnostic output at the sys‐
t
em connection and at the connection for a reset/override pushbutton.

Depending on the configuration, the application diagnostic output signals a certain sta‐
t
us of the protective device, e.g. if the reset pushbutton must be engaged.
For a signal of the protective device to be displayed, a light can be connected to the
application diagnostic output or the signal can be transmitted to the machine con‐
troller.
The following signals can be output over the application diagnostic output:

3.2.6 Muting
Muting according to IEC 62046 temporarily bypasses the protective action of the multi‐
ple li
ght beam safety device so that material can be transported to or from a machine
or system. As a result, the work process remains uninterrupted.
The function is configured during commissioning.
The distinction between people and materials is made by 2 signals that are indepen‐
dent of each other. Based on the logical evaluation of these signals, the protective
device is bypassed if a valid muting condition is present. As soon as something other
than material enters the hazardous area, the work process is interrupted.
3.2.7 C1 muting release
The protective device has an internal muting release. The C1 muting release function
c
an be configured during commissioning and is located at In4 of the system connec‐
tion.
The C1 muting release function is a supplementary signal from an external source that
is only used for muting release and is required for every muting cycle.
3.2.8 Near Field Communication (NFC)
Overview
T
he active unit of the multiple light beam safety device has an integrated NFC interface
for transmitting diagnostic data of the protective device to an NFC-capable device.
The integrated NFC interface is intended for temporary use.
Diagnostic data
T
he following diagnostic data can be displayed in an NFC-capable device:
Device information and device status, e.g. name, serial number, type code, status
of OSSDs, muting status or quality of alignment
Configuration of the device, e.g. whether the restart interlock is activated
Fault diagnosis with specification of the error code, error description, diagnostic
LED and troubleshooting
An NFC-capable antenna is integrated behind the front screen of the multiple light
beam safety device for transmitting the data. The area is marked with the NFC-symbol.

Calling up diagnostic data

o be able to call up information, you need an NFC-capable device, e.g. a smartphone
and the SICK Safety Assistant app provided by SICK.

Hold the NFC-capable mobile device near the marked NFC-area on the lower end
of the active unit to call up the diagnostic data.
Complementary information
The diagnostic data can also be read out in the voltage-free state of the protective
device. However, you will receive more information if the protective device is supplied
with voltage.

4.2 Operating entity of the machine

machine control and changes to the mechanical mounting of the multiple light

Persons and parts of the body to be protected may not be recognized in case of non-
observance.

Make sure that the following design requirements are met so that the multiple
light beam safety device can fulfill its protective function.

The active and passive units must be arranged such that persons or parts of
the body are safely detected when they enter the hazardous area.
°
Reaching under, over, and around as well as moving the multiple light beam
safety device must be prevented.
°
Check whether additional safety measures (e.g. restart interlock) are neces‐
sary when it is possible for people to be located between the protective
device and the hazardous point without being detected.

Certain types of light radiation can influence the protective device, e.g., light radiation
from fluorescent lamps with electronic ballast installed in the path of the beam, or
beams from laser pointers directed at the active unit.

dangerous.

4.3.2 Minimum distance from the hazardous point
A minimum distance must be maintained between the multiple light beam safety
de
vice and the hazardous point. This distance is required to prevent a person or part of
the body from reaching the hazardous area before the dangerous state of the machine
state has completed.

Calculating the minimum distance according to ISO 13855
T
he calculation of the minimum distance is based on international or national stan‐
dards and statutory requirements applicable at the place of installation of the machine.
If the minimum distance is calculated according to ISO 13855, then it depends on the
following points:
Machine stopping time (time interval between triggering the sensor function and
the end of the machine’s dangerous state)
Response time of the protective device
Approach speed of personnel
Type of approach: orthogonal (at right angles)
Parameters specified based on the application
For the USA (scope of OSHA and ANSI), different regulations may apply, e.g.:

tance.
Approach
The example shows the calculation of the minimum distance for an orthogonal (at right
angles) approach to the multiple light beam safety device. Depending on the applica‐
tion and the ambient conditions, a different calculation may be required (e.g., at a dif‐
ferent angle to the direction of approach or an indirect approach).
