For the design of the safety system to conform to engineer standards acc. to EN
ISO 13849-1:2015 category 2, the safety system must be tested prior to each
dangerous movement of the plant / machine. Without tesng, the operaon or
wiring of the ELMON relay 31 safety relay does not sasfy these safety requirements.
The manufacturer assumes no liability in the event of non-observance or intenonal abuse.
2. General safety regulaons and protecve measures
• Themanufacturerandusersoftheplant/machineonwhichtheproteconisbeingusedareresponsible
forimplemenngandfollowingallapplicablesafetyregulaonsandrules.
• Whenusedinconjunconwith the higher-ordercontroller, the proteconguaranteesfunconal
safety,butnotthesafetyoftheenreplant/machine.Thesafetyoftheenreplant/machinemust,
therefore, beassessedinaccordancewith machinery direcve2006/42/ECorappropriateproduct
norm before using the device.
• Theoperangmanualmustalwaysbeavailableattheplaceofinstallaonoftheprotecon.
Theymustbereadthoroughlyandobservedbyallpersonsinvolvedintheoperaon,maintenanceand
servicingoftheprotecon.
• Theproteconmustonly be installedand commissionedbyprofessionalsfamiliarwiththese opera-
nginstruconsandtheapplicableoperaonalsafetyandaccidentprevenonregulaons.Allofthe
instruconsprovidedintheseoperanginstruconsmustbeobservedandfollowed.
Allelectricalworkmustonlybeperformedbyskilledelectricians.
• AllrelevantelectricalengineeringandEmployer'sLiabilityInsuranceAssociaonsafetyregulaonsmust
be observed.
Duringworkontheswitchingunit,itistobeswitchedtozeropotenal,checkedtoensurethatitisat
zeropotenalandprotectedagainstbeingrestarted.
• Ifthepotenal-freecontactoftherelayoutputissuppliedexternallywithadangerousvoltage,make
certainthatthisvoltageisswitchedoduringworkontheswitchingunit.
• Theswitchingunitdoesnotcontainanycomponentsthatrequireservicingbytheuser.Unauthorised
conversionsand repairsmadetothe switchingunitwillvoid all guaranteesand the manufacturer’s
liability.
• Theproteconsystemistobeprofessionallyinspectedatappropriateintervalsandbedocumentedin
suchawaythatitiscomprehensibleatallmes.
Safety advice
• Theswitchingunitenablesoperaonat230 Vorat24 V.Connecngtheoperangvoltagetothe
wrongterminalscandestroytheswitchingunit.
Do not install in the immediate vicinity of strong sources of heat.
• Forcapaciveandinducveloads,ensureadequateprotecvecircuits.
• Itisnotpermissibletooperatethesafetyrelaywhilethehousingisopen.

3. General
The ELMON relay 31switchingunit,designedwithonechannel,isusedforevaluangsafetycontactmatsandfor
safeguardinglocaonswherethereisariskofcrushingandcungthroughtheuseofsafetycontactedges
andsafetybumpers(sensors).
TheELMONrelay 31switchingunitisintendedforuseonplants/machinesthatmakeatestsignalavailable
throughaprimarycontrollerpriortoeachdangerousmovement.Incombinaonwiththetestsignal,the
switchingunitsasessafetycategory 2acc.toENISO13849-1:2015"Safety-related parts of control systems".
Monitoringofthestandbycurrentismadepossiblebyanintegratedterminangresistorinthesensor.If
thespeciedstandbycurrentisowing,theoutputrelayisacvatedandtheswitchingcontactisclosed.If
thesensorisactuatedorthesensorcircuitisinterrupted,therelayswitchingcontactopens.Themonito-
ringstateofthesensorandtheappliedoperangvoltageareindicatedbyLEDs.
4. Proper use
TheELMONrelay 31switchingunitcanonlyfullitssafety-relatedtaskifusedproperly.
Properuseoftheswitchingunit isthe useas proteconincombinaonwithsafetycontactmats,safety
bumpers and safety contact edges.
Anyusesaboveandbeyondtheseusesconstuteimproperuse.Themanufacturerassumesnoliabilityfor
damages arising from improper use.
Thedevicemayonlybeusedinspecialapplicaonswiththemanufacturer’sexpressconsent.

Polycarbonatehousingwith1xM12and2xM16screwconneconsforon-wallmounnginharshenviron-
ments.
Theswitchingunitistobeprofessionallymountedatasuitablelocaon.Aerremovingthecover,thehousing
canbemountedwithfourscrews.
Theswitchingunitmaybemountedinanyorientaon.Topreventmoisturepenetraon,itshould,however,
beinstalledsothatthecableconduitspointdownward.
Version ELMON relay 31‑31W
SameasversionELMONrelay 31-31,butwithchangeovercontact(outputs12 13 14).
For technical reasons, output assignments are not the same as those of version ELMON
relay 31-31(seepage20).
6. Commissioning
6.1 Prerequisites
• Whensupplyingwith12-24 V AC/DC,the voltagemustcomplywiththe requirementsforsafetylow
voltage(SELV).
• Cablesinstalledoutdoorsoroutsideoftheswitchingcabinetmustbeprotectedappropriately.
• Theproteconclassspeciedforthisdeviceisonlyensuredifthesupplylineshavebeenproperlyclamped
tothescrewconneconsandthehousingcoverisappropriatelyscreweddown.
6.2 Electrical connecon
• Connectsupplyvoltage12-24 V AC/DCtoterminals12 24 V AC/DCor230 V ACtoterminalsPE L1 N.
• Duringusemainsvoltageit´sadvisabletoincludeadelayfuseproteconof1A.
Connect the sensor to terminals X1 X2.
Connect the control circuit that is to be monitored to terminals 13 14 or, for version ELMON relay
31-31W, to terminals 12 13 14accordingtotherequirements.
Connect the test signal supplied by the primary control to the Test Signal terminals and select the
waveformviaDIPslideswitchS1.
Uponsuccessfulcommissioning,safetyoutput13 14(ELMONrelay 31-31W12 13)isacvated(relaycontact
"closed").Actuaonofthesensorcausesrelaycontact13 14(ELMONrelay 31-31W12 13)toopen.
Sucient fuse protecon must be provided on all output contacts with capacive and
inducve loads.

Forastandard-compliantdesignoftheprotecon,theprimarymachinecontrolmustperformatestprior
toeachdangerousmovementorduringthenon-dangerousphase/movementofthemachine.Uponappli-
caonofthetestsignal,theoutputterminaloftheswitchingunitmustopen.Thischangeinswitchingstate
must be evaluated by the primary machine control. If the test result is correct, the machine control then
iniatesthemovementorthenextworkstep.Otherwise,thecontrolmustoutputanerrormessageand
thepower-drivenworkequipment(e.g.motor)mustreceiveaswitch-osignalfromthemachinecontrol.
TheavailabletestsignalcanbeselectedwiththeDIPslideswitch.

6.5 Example of use
Safety-relatedmonitoringofasensorcircuitwithprimaryPLCormachinecontrol.
Forafunconaltestoftheprotecon,thePLC/machinecontrolperformsatestpriortoeachdangerous
movement or in the non-dangerous phase/movement of the machine. If the test result is correct, the PLC/
machinecontroltheniniatesthemovementorthenextworkstep.

TheELMONrelay 31switchingunitisonlyequippedwithoneinputforsensors.Nevertheless,itispossible
toconnecttwoormoresensorstotheswitchingunit.Forthispurpose,theindividualsensorsareconnected
inseriesaccordingtogure 1.
Safety contact edges SENTIR edge:
UptoveSENTIRedgemaybeconnectedinseries.ThemaximumtotallengthotheSENTIRedgeshallnot
exceed 100 m.
ThelengthofoneSENTIRedgemaybeupto25m.ThetotalcablelengthotheinseriesconnectedSENTIR
edge must not exceed 25 m.
Safety contact bumper SENTIR bumper:
UptoveSENTIRbumpermaybeconnectedinseries.ThemaximumtotallengthotheSENTIRbumper
shall not exceed 15 m.

thearrangementistobemeasured.Theresistancemustbe8.2kΩ±500Ωwhenthesensorisinacveand
must not exceed 500 Ωwhenitisacve.
7. Taking out of service and disposal
TheproductsmanufacturedbyASOareintendedsolelyforcommercialuse(B2B).Attheendofuse,the
productsaretobedisposedofaccordingtoalllocal,regionalandnaonalregulaons.Productscanalsobe
returnedtoASO,whichwillthendisposeofthemproperly.
