1 Manual Description
1.1 Introduction
NL-8510 is a newly introduced desktop POS with thermal printer. This manual gives
descriptions on how to properly use NL-8510.
2 Start
2.1 Introduction
This chapter will introduce NL-8510 from unpacking to deeply. It includes housing,
principles, detailed description of functions, PIN definition, and the function of each interface,
settings and other relevant operation.
2.2 Familiar with POS
2.2.1 unpacking
Open the packing; get the NL-8510 and accessories. Observation of the appearance whether
broken down and cannot be used. If the damage is caused during the transport, please contact your
supplier, and keep the package. Make sure using the original package to return the
damaged product, so to ensure that your after-sale rights

2.2.3 Product's detailed functional description
Clock Display the correct time
Magcard track 1//2/3 reading;ISO7816. supports 75 BPI and 210BPI and
bi-directional swipe.
LCD
128*64 LCD, EL backlight, adjustable contrast, support standard
ASCII characters, GB18030/GB2312 Chinese Character and
graphical document.
Keyboard
12 number/alphabet keys, 6 functional hot-keys.
There are buttons of Up, Down, Menu, 10 numbers (0-9), * and #,
ESC, Backspace and Enter. Some of them can be multiplex, such as
* and., # and alphabet, menu and power. Also supports key
combination.
IC card
Supports one IC card, can read and write CPU card and memory
card which meets the standard of ISO7816, support Chinese
financial IC card criterion, and meets EMV standard.

SAM card
Supports two SAM cards, can read and write CPU card which meet
the standard of ISO7816. Support Chinese financial IC card
criterion.
RF (Optional)Built-in RF function, support type A protocol.
Peripheral interface Two RS232 serial ports, one for serial port communication, one
for PINPAD connection.
Communication
RS232 serial port: serial transfer rate is 1200-115200 bps, the
parameter of communication can be set by the
user.
Wire MODEM: built-in high speed modem
Wireless modem (optional): built-in wireless modem, supports
GPRS or CDMA.
Ethernet (optional): built-in 10M Ethernet network function.

Thermal printer can print graphics and many kinds of barcodes.

2.3 Startup/shutdown/reboot
2.3.1 Startup
Press the “menu” button for 1 sec, LCD display the light; POS is ready to use
2.3.2 shutdown
Press the”menu” button for 3-5 sec, shut the pos down.
2.3.3 Reboot
If there are some special reason to let the POS fail to use, can use startup and shut down to reboot
the POS
2.4 Main Boot Menu and its functions
Figure 3-1 is the factory default main menu, within which Download , Selftest and
Management are firmware controlled program.
By using Run option , you can start your own program. Cursor indicates
the current selected position.
After start-up, press key F1 and key F2 to move the cursor then press confirm to run
correspondent program.

Download: download user-program, Key managment program, download files to flash disk,
remote download user-program, remote download files to flash disk.
Self-check: Individual test of every function module, If you want to test whether a particular
module works before usage or development, this self-test can perform basic functional test.
Manage: To use this function, you must enter the password:”159951”. “Manage” menu is for
setting operating parameters. For example: the seventh option “language”, you can choose
Chinese or English. Save this setting then all options’ language will display according to your
choice.
Running: run the user program.
Wireless icon: If your POS is equipped with the wireless module, at the right side of the screen
will show the type of wireless modules (GPRS or CDMA) and signal strength.
2.5 Program download
When running posdownload.exe for the first time, the following window may show up, just
click on the OK button to choose the default setting.

Then the main window will be shown.
Selecting the download type
This tool supports downloading of 3 different files: user program, key program and normal
file. They will be downloaded into different storage space respectively, i.e., User Program will be
downloaded into the user program space(up to 320 kB), Key Program will be downloaded into the
key management program space(up to 64 kB), while normal files will be download into the flash
file system space(up to 2MB).
Adding a file for downloading.
Click on the Append button, a file browse window will be shown for you to locate your
download target file.
Starting a download session
Click on the Get Ready(W) button to start a download session.
Batch downloading
This tool support batch downloading of multiple files of different download type, i.e., you
can select ,

Stopping/Cancelling a download session and closing the
COM port
Click on the Stop(S) button to stop/cancel a download session or close the COM port.
Selecting the COM port
Click on the pulldown list Port to select a suitable com port for download. Notice that you
cannot change the COM port setting after a download session has been started.
Downloading time to POS
When downloading the User Program or the Key Program, the current time of the host
download machine will be sent along to the POS. This function greatly facilitates the setting of the
machine’s real time clock. Be sure to check the Download Time item to enable this function.
PinCode
PinCode is the password for download. Every maching is shipped with a default download
password: 159951. You can change the PinCode through the SETUP function of the POS. If you
change the POS’s PinCode, be sure to change PinCode setting of the POSDOWNLOAD for a
successful download.
Trouble shootings
Q: The download session doesn’t start after I click on the Get Ready(W) button.
A: Be sure to select the correct COM port for download. Make sure the download data line has
been connected to the POS’s RS232 port. Make sure the POS has been put into the download
mode by pressing Enter on the Download icon. Make sure the files you selected really exist. Make
sure the PinCode has not been changed, or you have provide the right PinCode.
Q: There is no COM port on my PC, how can I do the download?
A: You can use a USB-TO-COM cable instead.

3 The testing on functional modules
In order to facilitate the technical maintenance staff on-site maintenance for this product, problem
positioning and hardware repair. We provide this self-check program in the BIOS. Using this
program you can do all the manual testing on each of the POS’sthe functional module. .

To test the keyboard
First to test if the key name matches the key code, for example: press “2” to see if code 2 is
entered. For detail display please see the figure 3-3.

3.3 Files
Test the file system of flash disk.
Firstly, display the free space of flash disk and the number of available file handlers (the
number of files that can be opened without closing the files that have already been opened)

Press Key “backspace” to start scanning the flash disk then press any key to display the
total number of existing files and a whole file lists with file name, creation time and other
information, shown as figure 3-7 PressESCto quit and press other keys to see the next
document.

File SELFTEST, the three numbers represent: File Length (bytes), File Start Block No. and
File Property. (A means common file document, no encryption; B means encrypted File.) Other
File display format is shown as figure3-7.
3.4 Magcard Test
Perform Card Reading Test, shown as figure 3-8.

According your need, select the track numbers to be read; support bi-directional swipe; when
swiping the card, the magnetic stripe should be facing the LCD. After the swiping, the LCD will
display the detail data of each track. At the menu shown in figure 3-8 press “ESC” to quit then
enter the menu shown as figure 3-9.

Under this menu, you can manually enter MagCard Number or Insert an ICC for testing. The POS
will read the IC Card’s ATR (Answer to Request) data. Press “ESC” to quit this test, as shown in
figure 3-9.

power up/down, SAM1 card, SAM2 card, SAM4 card (ESIM card) card’s power up/down

SAM4 also known as ESIM card, during the testing will show that the ATR dataAnswer To
Request of SAM4, the random number have been read, the speed of reading and writing, time
etc.
SAM Card needs to be inserted to the card slot before testing(Power off when inserting).
When inserting IC Card, the card’s chip side needs to be facing up.

3.5.2 MIFare Card
Please put the RF Card on the cover of print cartridge orhold the MIFare Card close to the
right of the print cartridge.
Under the menu shown as figure 3-10, press Key “2”to enter MIFare Card test. Under the
menu shown as figure 3-12, if the MIFare card is at the correct reading position, press “enter” the
LCD will display its card number.
