Your battery tool should be charged in a location

where the temperature is more than 50°F but

less than IO0°F.

Under extreme usage or temperature conditions,

battery leakage may occur. If liquid comesin

contactwithyour skin, wash immediatelywith

soap and water, then neutralizewithlemonjuice

or vinegar.If liquidgets in youreyes, flush them

withclean waterfor at least 10 minutes,then

seek immediatemedicalattention.

If carrying your battery tool at your side, make

sure it is not running and your finger is not on the

switch. Avoid accidental starting.

An extensioncord shouldnotbe used unless

absolutely necessary.Use ofimproper

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RECHARGING HOT BATTERIES

When usingyour drillcontinuously,the battedes in yourbattery packwillbecome hot. You shouldlet a hot

battery pack cool down for approximately 30 minutes before attempting to recharge.

Note: This situation only occurs when continuous use of your drill causes the batteries to become hot. It does

not occur under normal circumstances. Refer to "CHARGING BATTERY PACK" for normal recharging of

batteries. If the charger does not charge your battery pack under normal circumstances, return both the battery

pack and charger to your nearest Sears repair center for electrical check.

CHARGING BATTERY PACK

The battery pack for thistoolhas been shippedina

low charge conditionto prevent possible problems.

Therefore, you shouldcharge itat least3 hoursprior

to use.

Note: Batterieswillnot reach full chargethe first time

they are charged.Allowseveral cycles(drilling

followed by recharging)for them to becomefully

charged.

TO CHARGE

• Charge battery pack onlywith the charger

provided.

• Make sure power supply is normal house

voltage, 120 volts, 60 Hz, AC only,

• Connectcharger tobatterypack byinserting

charger plugintoinputjack.As shownin figure1,

inputjack is locatedonthe backsideof battery

pack.

• Note: Battery pack can remainon your drillor be

removedwhilecharging.When batterypack isout

ofthe drill,be carefulnotto touchboth terminals

with a metalobject.Touchingbothterminalswith a

metalobjectwillshortoutthe batterypack.

• Connectchargerto powersupply.

• The charge indicatorlight(LED), locatedon the

batterypack, willlightupand glowwhen the

chargeris properlyconnectedto powersupply.

This lightindicatesthe charger isoperating

properly.Itwillremainon untilcharger is

disconnectedfrom powersupply.The light only

glowswhileyourtoolischarging,not duringuse.

• Afternormalusage,3 hoursofcharginglimeisrequired

tobefullycharged.

• "Fnebatterypackwillbecomeslightlywarmtothetouch

whilecharging.Thisisnormalanddoesnotindicatea

problem.

• Do not operatethe toolwhileitisconnectedtothe

charger.The driving abilitywillnot increase.

• DO not place charger in an area of extreme heat or

cold. It will work best at normal room temperature.

_k CAUTION: Yourdrill'sbattery pack contains

specialhigh temperature batteries to help

preventbatterydamage when lefton charge for

extended periodsoftime. However,once the

batteriesbecome fully charged, we recommend

thatyou unplugyourcharger frompowersupply

and disconnectit from the batterypack.

TWO SPEED

Yourdrill has a two speed feature in the switch.

Depressthe switchtriggerhalfwayfor driving screws

at low speed. Depress the switchtriggerall theway

for normaldrilling.Release the switchtriggertotrun

drilloff.

The switch trigger can be lockedinthe OFF position.

This feature can be used to prevent the possibilityof

accidental startingwhen notin use. To lock switch

trigger, place the directionof rotation selector in

center position.

_, WARNING: Batterytools are alwaysin

operatingcondition. Therefore, switchshould

always be lockedwhen not in useor carryingat

your side.

REVERSIBLE

See Figure 3.

Thistool has the feature of being reversible. The

direction of rotation is controlled by a selector located

above the switch trigger. With the drill held in normal

operating position, the direction of rotation selector

should be positioned to the left of the switch for

drilling. The ddlling direction is reversed when the

selector is to the right of the switch.When the selector

is in center position, the switch trigger is locked.

_1 CAUTION: To prevent gear damage, always

allow chucktocome to a completestop before

changing thedirection of rotation.

To stop, release switchtriggerand allowthe chuck to

cometo a completestop.

• Make sure the latches on each side of your

battery pack snap in place and batterypack is

securedin ddll before beginningoperation.

_b. CAUTION: When placing battery packin your

drill, be sure raised rib inside drill alignswith

groove on battery pack and latches snap in place

properly. Improper assembly of battery pack can

cause damage to internalcomponents.

TO REMOVE BATTERY PACK

• Lock switch triggeron your drilr by placing the

direction of rotation selector in center position.

See Figure 3.

• Locate latcheson end ofbattery pack and

depress to release battery pack from your drill.

• Remove battery pack from your drill.

• Lookthe switchtriggerby placingthe directionof

• Open orclose chuckjaws to a point where the

openingisslightlylarger than thebit size you

intendto use. Also, raise thefront ofyourdrill

slightlyto keep the bitfrom falling out ofthe chuck

jaws.

• Insertdrillbit intochuckthefull length ofthejaws

as shownin Figure6.

• Remove chuck key from storage. See Figure4.

• Usingonlythe chuckkey provided,tightenthe

chuckjaws. Placechuck key in each ofthe three

holesand tighten ina clockwisedirection.

• Do not use a wrenchto tightenor loosenthe

chuckjaws.

• Remove chuckkey and returnit tochuck key

storage.

DRILLING

See Figure8.

WARNING: Be prepared for binding or bit

breakthrough. When these situations occur,drill

has a tendency tograb and kickoppositeto the

direction of rotationand could cause lossof

controlwhen breakingthroughmaterial. If not

prepared,this lossof controlcan resultin

possibleserious injury.

When drilling metals, use a light oil on the drillbit to

keep itfrom overheating.The oilwillprolongthe lifeof

the bitand increasethe drillingaction.

Ifthe bit jams in workpieceor ifthe drillstalls,release

switchtriggerimmediately.Removethe bitfrom the

workpieceand determine the reasonfor jamming.

LEVEL DRILLING

See Figure 9.

Aconvenientfeature provided withyour ddll is a level.

It is recessed in the motorhousingon top ofyourdrill.

Itcan be usedto keep drillbitslevel duringdrilling

operations.

When drillinghard smoothsurfaces usea center

punch to markdesiredhole location.This willprevent

the drill bit from slipping off center as the hole is

started.

The materialto be drilled shouldbe securedin a vise

or with clampstokeep it from turningas the drillbit

rotates.

Hold toolfirmly and placethe bit at the point to be

drilled. Depressthe switchtriggerto starttool.

Move the drillbit intotheworkpieceapplying only

enough pressureto keepthe bit cutting.Do notforce

or applyside pressureto elongatea hole.

CHUCK REMOVAL

See Figures 10, 11,and 12.

The chuck must be removed in order to use some

accessories. To remove:

• Lock the switchtrigger by placing the direction of

rotation selector in center position.

• Insert a5/16 inchor larger allenwrench(hex key

wrench)into the chuck of your drill and tighten the

chuck jaws securely.

• Tap the alien wrench sharply with a mallet in a

clockwise direction. See Figure 10.This will

loosen the screw in the chuck for easy removal.

Open chuckjaws and remove allen wrench.

Remove thechuck screwby turning it in a clock-

wise direction. See Figure 11.Note: The screw

has left hand threads.

• Insertalien wrench in chuck and tighten chuck

jaws securely. Tap sharply with a mallet in a

counterclockwise direction. This will loosen chuck

on the spindle, it can now be unscrewed by hand.

TO RETIGHTEN A LOOSE CHUCK

The chuck may become looseon spindle and develop

a wobble. Also, the chuck screw may become loose

causing the chuck jaws to bind and prevent them from

closing. To tighten, follow these steps:

• Lock the switch trigger by placing the direction of

rotation serector in center position.

• Insert allen wrench into chuck and tighten chuck

jaws securely.Tap allen wrench sharply with a

mallet in a clockwise direction. This will tighten

chuck on the spindle.

• Open the chuck jaws and remove allen wrench.

• Tighten the chuck screw. Note: The chuck screw

has left hand threads.

Most plasticsere susceptibletodamage from various

typesof commercialsolventsand may be damaged

bytheir use. Use clean clothsto remove dirt,dust,oil,

grease, etc.

gasoline, petroleum-basedproducts, penetrating

Your ddll's battery pack is equipped with 5 nickel-

cadmium rechargeable batteries. Length of service

from each charging will depend on the type of work

you are doing.

The batteries in this tool have been designed to

provide maximum trouble free life. However, like all

batteries, they will eventually wear out. Do not

disassemble battery pack and attempt to replace the

batteries. Handling of these batteries, especially when

wearing rings and jewelry, could result in a serious

burn.

To obtain thelongestpossiblebattery life,we suggest

the following:

• Store and charge your batteries in a coolarea.

Temperatures above normal room temperature

will shorten battery life.

• Never store batteries in e discharged condition.

Recharge them immediatelyafter they are

discharged.

• All batteries gradually lose their charge. The

higher the temperature the quicker they lose their

charge. If you store your tool for long periods of

time without using it, recharge the batteries every

month or two. This practice will prolong battery

life.

recycleordisposeofproperly.
