A Word from STERIS Corporation on the Warming of Solutions
Your AMSCO Warming Cabinet is capable of warming fluids, however the user should ALWAYS follow the
specific instructions of the manufacturer of the solution prior to warming any fluid.
In accordance with your facility protocol and recommended practices, in order to reduce possible patient injury,
always verify the temperature of any heated fluid prior to its use or administration.
STERIS offers the following guidelines for warming irrigation and IV fluids in a warming cabinet:
Before warming irrigation and IV fluids in the warming cabinet, check with the manufacturer of the solution
or fluid for their specific recommendation. The manufacturer’s directions will vary, depending on the
composition of the bottle material, the solution and the manufacturing process.
Irrigation/IV solutions must be warmed or cooled to the temperature appropriate for the surgical need.
Infused fluids must be heated or cooled in devices intended for that purpose.
Manufacturer’s written recommendations for storage, heating and proper use of all skin prep solutions
products must be followed. If the manufacturer has not provided specific instructions on heating, the
manufacturer of the solution must be contacted for clarification before any prepping solution is warmed.
Microwaves and autoclaves must not be used as warming devices.

Overview
Main Power ON/OFF switch.
ON/Standby button for each compartment (indicator for ON).
ON/Standby button has a built-in delay when turning off to
prevent inadvertently turning the unit off. In standby mode the
heater is turned off, power indicator flashes, LED display
continues to show actual compartment temperature and all other
discrete LEDs are turned off.
4-digit red LED display that displays both setpoint and actual
compartment temperatures in °F or °C.
Up arrow/down arrow buttons to adjust setpoint from 90°F (32°C)
to 160°F (71°C).
Pre-Set temperature limit for IV Fluids 90°F (32°C) to 110°F
(43°C). Mode key for IV fluids warming section.
Pre-Set temperature limit for Irrigation/Blankets 90°F (32°C)
to 160°F (71°C). Mode button for this selection.
Fahrenheit or Celsius selection.
Key sequence temperature lockout function to prevent
unauthorized temperature changes.
Visual indicator to show door ajar warning.
Audible and visual overtemperature alarms to indicate when
actual temperature exceeds 10°F (6°C) above the setpoint.
USB peripheral connection that allows the end user to plug a
Personal Computer (PC) or laptop computer into the warming
cabinet to retrieve the stored temperature data from controls
memory. The data may be stored or printed from the computer.
This requires a special program that is provided with each
warming cabinet for the end user to install on his/her computer.
Controls have capability for user prompts and service functions
(display defined error codes).
Temperature setpoint values and programming are retained in
memory in the event of a power loss. In the event of power loss,
the control resumes the function it was in before the power loss
(the mode [Irrigation/Blankets and °F or °C] and setpoint
temperatures).
3.2 Heating Operation
Overview
Control automatically operates warming cabinet heating system.
Each compartment has electric heating element(s) and
blower/fan(s) to circulate warm air throughout the compartments.
One control per chamber. The cabinet’s door ajar wiring
removes power to the heater element whenever the door is ajar.
The same switch detects the door status.
A Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) air probe is located at
the top of each compartment to monitor internal compartment
temperature and to ensure the compartment reaches and
maintains the correct setpoint temperature. For countertop

model and upper compartment of dual compartment warming
cabinets, the controls ensure accurate compartment
temperature within ±3°F (±1.7°C) of the setpoint for temperature
settings between 90-160°F (32-71°C). The lower compartment of
dual compartment models has an accuracy within ±5°F (±2.8°C)
of setpoint for temperature settings between 90-160°F (32-71°C).
For mid-size model, the controls ensure accurate compartment
temperature within ±3°F (±1.7°C) of the setpoint for temperature
settings between 90-110°F (32-43°C) and accuracy within ±5°F
(±2.8°C) for temperature settings between 110-160°F (43-71°C).
Note that the IV solution warming mode only operates in the 90-
110°F (32-43°C) range for all units.
The overtemperature alarm activates if the actual temperature
exceeds the setpoint by more than 10°F (6°C). While this
overtemperature output is active, the displayed temperature
flashes alternately with Hi as a visual indicator. The control
resumes normal operation (after an overtemperature condition)
when the measured temperature goes below the setpoint plus
10°F (6°C), but display continues flashing alternately between
compartment temperature and Hi as a visual indicator. The error
message can only be cleared by entering and exiting Standby
mode or turning OFF and back ON main power switch.
If failure occurs that does not allow the alarm and visual display
to activate when there is an overtemperature situation, the heater
turns off. As a secondary safety feature, if the upper temperature
limit feature fails, the warming cabinet’s thermal fuse limits the
temperature range to 230°F (110°C).
For a dual compartment warming cabinet, the lower
compartment is always in the Irrigation/Blankets mode.
IV solutions can only be processed in a countertop model, mid-
size model or the upper compartment of dual compartment
warming cabinet.
3.3 Temperature
Display
Temperature display is a 3-digit (4th digit for °F/°C indication),
red LED, 0.56” high display that displays setpoints or the actual
compartment (sensor) temperature. The normal function
indicates the actual compartment (sensor) temperature.
To display the setpoint temperature – push the Up or Down
button for a second and release the button. The setpoint
temperature displays for three to five seconds then reverts back
to display the actual (sensor) temperature. Many residential
digital thermostats operate in the same way.
WARNING – BURN HAZARD:
Before warming IV and
irrigation solutions in the
warming cabinet, check with
the manufacturer of the
solution or fluid for the
specific recommendations.
