SAFETY PROCEDURES AND PRECAUTIONS FOR

REFRIGERATION AIR HANDLING EQUIPMENT

A. General Precautions

 Onlyexperiencedandqualiedpersonnelshouldinstall,operate,andmaintainrefrigerationequipment.

 Frequentvisualinspections andcontinuous monitoringshould beemployedto preventthe escapeof refrigerant.

Electronicrefrigerantdetectorsshouldbeusedforsensingandwarningofthepresenceofrefrigerantintheatmo-

sphere.

 Temperaturemonitoringinstrumentsshouldbeusedtowarnagainstlossofrefrigerationinanyareawherearisein

temperaturecouldbeharmfultopeopleorproduct.

C. Refrigerant Piping

 Avoidhydraulicshockorhammeringinrefrigerantliquidlinesthatmaycontainliquidrergerant.Hydraulicshockcan

occurinhotgaslinescausedbyliquidbuildup.Liquidslugstravelingathighvelocitycancausedamagetorefrigerant

connectionsonthecoilplusdamagetootherpipingandcontrolvalves.

 Avoidhydrauliclockupcausedbytrappedliquid.Withanincreaseinambienttermperaturearoundtheconnedliquid,

theexpansionpressurecouldcauserefrigerantlinestoburst.

 Refrigerantlinesmustbesizedproperlytoassuresatisfactorysystemoperation.Therefrigerantconnectionsizes

furnishedonthecoilsmaynotbethesamesizerequiredtomeetsystemperformancecriteria.

 ForHFCrefrigerants,pipingsystemsmustbeproperlyevacuatedtoremovenoncondensablesandmoisturepriorto

 Beforeconnectingtherefrigerantlinestothecoil,makesurethepipingandcontrolvalvesontheunitareproperly

supported.Theunitrefrigerationconnectionsarenotdesignedtocarrytheweightofvalvesandpiping.

D. Coils

 Refrigerationcoilsmustnotbeusedwithrefrigerantotherthanthatstampedonthenameplates.Coilmustnotbe

subjectedtohigherpressurethandesignedworkingpressurestampedonthenameplates.

 Thecoilsareshippedwithaholdingchargeofdrynitrogen.Iftheunithasbeendamagedintransit,resultinginthe

lossoftheholdingcharge,theleakshouldbefoundbeforeinstallingtheunit.Pressurizetheunitto150psigwith

nitrogentondtheleak.

E. Coil Cleaning

 Anysolutionusedtocleancoilsorkillbacteriamustnotbecorrosivetometalsandmaterialsusedinthemanufactur-
