Follow Instructions – All operating and maintenance instructions
should be followed and warnings adhered to.
Cleaning – Unplug this product from the wall socket before cleaning.
Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
Accessories – Do not use accessories not recommended in this
instruction book as they may be hazardous.
Water and Moisture – Hazard of electric shock – Do not use this
product near water or in rainy/moist situations.
Placing or Moving – Do not place on an unstable cart, stand, tripod,
bracket or table.The product may fall, causing serious injury to a child
or adult, and serious damage to the product. A product and cart
combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force,
and uneven surfaces may cause the product and cart combination to
overturn.
Power Cord Protection – Power cords should be routed so that they
are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or
against them. Pay particular attention to plugs and the point from
which the cords exit the product.
Lightning – For added protection of this product during a lightning
storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for long periods of
time, disconnect it from the wall socket.This will prevent damage to
the product due to lightning and power-line surges.
Overloading – Do not overload wall sockets and extension cords as
this can result in risk of fire or electric shock.
Objects and Liquid – Never allow objects of any kind or liquids to be
pushed/spilled into this product through openings as they may come
into contact with dangerous voltage or other hazards.
Servicing – Do not attempt to service this product yourself as
opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage
points or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service
personnel.
Damage Requiring Service – Disconnect this product from the wall
socket and all power sources including batteries, and refer servicing
to qualified service personnel under the following conditions:
a) When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged.
b) If any liquid has been spilled onto, or objects have fallen into the
product.
c) If the product has been exposed to rain or water.
d) If the product does not operate normally even if you follow the
operating instructions. Adjust only those controls that are covered
by the operating instructions. Improper adjustment of other
controls may result in damage and will often require extensive
work by a qualified technician to restore the product to its normal
operating condition.
e) If the product has been dropped or the cabinet has been
damaged.
f) When the product exhibits a distinct change in performance.This
indicates a need for service.
Replacement Parts – When replacement parts are required, be sure
the service technician has used replacement parts that are specified
or that have the same characteristics as the original part.
Unauthorised substitutions may result in fire, electric shock or other
hazards.
Safety Check – Upon completion of any service or repairs to this
product, ask the service technician to perform safety checks to
determine that the product is in safe operating order.
Condensation – Moisture will form in the operating section of the unit
if the unit is brought from cool surroundings into a warm room or if the
temperature of the room rises suddenly.When this happens, the unit's
performance will be impaired.To prevent this, let the unit stand in its
new surroundings for about an hour before switching it on, or make
sure that the room temperature rises gradually. Condensation may
also form during the summer if the unit is exposed to the breeze from
an air conditioner. In such cases, change the location of the unit.

Please read this page carefully before attempting to operating your DVD/VCR.
Important warning
A DVD/VCR player is a Class 1 laser product, however this unit
uses a visible laser beam which could cause hazardous radiation
exposure.
Be sure to operate the unit correctly as instructed.
The following caution label is located on the rear panel of the
unit.
When this unit is plugged into the
wall outlet, do not place your eyes
close to the opening of the disc tray
and other openings to look into the
inside of this unit.
Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures
other than those specified herein may result in hazardous
radiation exposure.
Do not open covers and do not repair yourself. Refer servicing to
qualified personnel.
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this
equipment to rain or moisture.

Compatibility information
This unit can play back both DVD discs and audio CDs.
The DVD player detects whether the disc loaded is a
DVD disc or audio CD and automatically sets the
correct playback mode.
Use only discs marked as follows:
DVD
Audio CDs
Region management information
This unit is designed and manufactured to respond to
the Region Management Information recorded on DVD
discs. If the region number of a disc does not
correspond to the region number of this unit, it will not
be able to play the disc.
The region number of this product is 2.
This unit will only function correctly with DVD discs from
Region 2. Other Region number discs cannot be played
with this unit.

Titles
When two or more movies are recorded on a DVD disc,
the disc is divided into two or more sections. Each
section is called a ‘TITLE’.
For example, trailers and
documentaries would be separate ‘TITLES’ to the
featured movie on the disc.
Chapters
A title can be subdivided into many parts. Each part of
a title is called a ‘CHAPTER’.
Tracks
As a DVD is divided into ‘TITLES’ an audio CD is
divided into ‘TRACKS’, Tracks are the individual songs
on an audio CD.

Ensure that your DVD/VCR is connected correctly (see the quick start guide) before following these instructions.
Your DVD/VCR is set to English language by default, however you can select other languages if required.
Note:
Menus will only stay on-
screen for approximately
one minute after the last

Switch on your DVD/VCR
Plug your unit into the mains and switch on at the
socket. Switch on your TV.
Press the standby button to switch on your
DVD/VCR.

Access the SYSTEM SETUP menu
Press vcr then setup/menu on your remote control.
The first time you press SET UP/MENU, your VCR
will go straight to the LANGUAGE menu.

Select LANGUAGE
Press the cursor or buttons to highlight
LANGUAGE.
Press enter/select to access the LANGUAGE
menu.

Choose a language
Press the cursor or buttons to highlight a
language from the list.
Press enter/select to confirm your selection.

Exit the menus
Press the setup/menu button on your remote
control until all on-screen menus are removed.

clock setting
You must set the correct time and date on your DVD/VCR before you make any timed VCR recordings.
Note:
Any timer
recordings may miss the
beginning or end of the
programme/s to be
recorded if the time or
date are set incorrectly.
Your DVD/VCR features a
24-hour clock.
Once set, the time will
show in your unit’s front
panel display when it is in
standby mode.
If your unit is unplugged
from the mains or you
have a power cut, your
DVD/VCR will keep the
correct time and date in
its memory for
approximately 30
minutes. If there is no
power for longer than this,
you must set the correct
time and date again.

Select CLOCK SET
Press vcr then setup/menu on your remote control.
Until the clock is set, your VCR will go straight to
the SYSTEM SETUP menu whenever
SETUP/MENU is pressed.
Press the cursor
or buttons to highlight
CLOCK SET.
Press enter/select to select CLOCK SET.

Set the DATE
The DAY digit will be flashing. Press the cursor
or buttons to select the correct date.
The three letters after the date indicate the day of the
week (i.e. MON=Monday).
The day will NOT be correct until the month and
year have been set.

Set the MONTH
Press the cursor or buttons to highlight
MONTH (which will then flash).
Press the cursor
or buttons to select the
correct month (1-12).
For example, select 3 if the month is March, or 10 if the
month is October.

Set the YEAR
Press the cursor or buttons to highlight
YEAR (which will then flash).
Press the cursor
or buttons to select the
correct year.
Once the YEAR is set correctly the DAY of the week near
the top of the screen should be correct.

Set the HOUR
Press the cursor or buttons to highlight TIME
(which will then flash).
Press the cursor
or buttons to select the
correct hour.
Please note that your DVD/VCR clock uses the 24-hour
format.

Set the MINUTES
Press the cursor button once.The MINUTES will
then begin to flash.
Press the cursor
or buttons to select the
correct MINUTES. Press enter/select to store your
clock settings.

remove all on-screen menus.

tuning channels
Before you can use all of the VCR features on your DVD/VCR,
you must tune in all available TV/Satellite/Cable channels from your TV to your DVD/VCR.
Note:
Your DVD/VCR
features a tuner that can
store up to 80 different
channels (if available).
Before you can view a
channel on your unit or
make a recording, you
must tune all available
stations into your VCR.
Switch on any external
equipment connected to
your unit (e.g. a satellite
decoder) before you start
tuning.
It is highly recommended
that you store the
channels you tune in the
order shown in the table
below.

connected via a SCART
lead to your DVD/VCR,
then press 0/AV on your
remote control to select it,
rather than tuning it into
channel 6.

Select your VCR channel
Press the standby button to switch on your
DVD/VCR.
Select your allocated VCR channel on your TV’s
remote control (usually 0, but can be stored against
any channel number).

Access the TUNING menu
Press setup/menu on your remote control to access
the MAIN menu. Press the cursor or buttons
to highlight CH TUNING then press enter/select to
access the CH TUNING menu.
You will NOT be able to access the tuning menu if your
VCR currently has AV1, AV2, or AV3 selected. Please first
tune to CH1 by pressing the channel buttons on the front
of the unit until ‘CH 1’ appears in the display.

Search for channels
Press the cursor or buttons to begin
searching for a channel.
A small arrow will move along the tuning bar and your
VCR will automatically begin searching for a channel.
This may take a few seconds/minutes.

Select a channel
When the arrow stops, a channel has been found.
If the picture is poor, repeat step 3 to continue searching.
When you have found a channel with good
reception, press enter/select to select it.
The channel number will now begin to flash.

Store a channel
You should now store the channel you have selected
against the correct channel number on your VCR.
Press the cursor or buttons to select the
correct channel number.
The table opposite shows the correct channel numbers for
stations to be stored against.
Press enter/select to save your settings.

Tune other channels
Repeat steps 3-5 until all available channels have
been tuned in.
When you have finished tuning, press the
setup/menu button
twice
to remove all on-screen
menus.

playback features
Your DVD/VCR is marked ‘HQ’ which means it incorporates VHS high quality technology.
A built in detail enhancer is used to boost the recorded signal and provide maximum picture quality.
Only use VHS video cassettes in your unit.
Note:
If you do not press
stop before a cassette
reaches its end, the auto
rewind facility will
automatically rewind the
cassette to the beginning.
Your VCR will then
automatically eject the
cassette.
Please note that no
sound is output whilst
playback is paused.

Automatic Playback
Press the standby button to switch on your
DVD/VCR. Press the vcr button on your remote
control to switch to the VCR function on your unit.
Select the VCR channel on your TV’s remote control.
Insert a video cassette.
If you insert a pre-recorded video cassette with the record
protection tab removed (for example a rented or bought film) your VCR will start to play the cassette
automatically.

Start/stop playing a tape
If playback does not begin automatically, press the
play button.
Press stop to stop playing a video cassette.The TV
channel currently selected on your VCR will be
displayed on-screen.
Press play again to resume playback.

Slow motion playback
Press slow during playback of a VCR, playback will
slow to approximately 1/5th normal speed. Press
slow a second time; playback will slow to
approximately 1/10th normal speed. Press slow a
third time; playback will slow to approximately 1/30th
normal speed.
Press
play
to resume playback at normal speed.

Pause playback
Press pause/still while a cassette is playing to
pause playback and view a still picture. Press
pause/still while a cassette is paused to advance
frame by frame.
The pause feature will automatically resume normal
playback after 5 minutes to avoid damaging the cassette.
Press play to resume normal playback.

Call feature
Press the display/call button during playback; the
current time, and any other relevant information (i.e.
tape counter, record sign) will be displayed on-
screen.
Press display/call again to remove the on-screen
display.

Eject your cassette
Press stop to stop playback. Press eject and the
cassette tape will eject from the VCR.
The TV channel currently selected on your VCR will
be displayed on-screen.

rewind & forward features
The fast forward and rewind features of your VCR help you navigate quickly through a cassette tape.
Using the search feature you can also search forwards or backwards through a cassette with the picture on-screen.
Note:
During picture
search sound will be
muted and white lines will
appear across the screen.

Fast rewind/forward
To rapidly wind a cassette backwards or forwards,
press the search or buttons when a video
cassette is NOT playing back.
If the fast forward feature reaches the end of the cassette,
the cassette will then be automatically rewound and
ejected.

Access picture search function
This feature of your VCR will enable you to rewind or fast
forward through a cassette with the picture showing on-
screen.
Insert a cassette; it should begin playback
automatically if pre-recorded (press play if it doesn’t).
Now press either of the search
or buttons.

Picture search
The first press of the search or button will
search through your cassette at the following speed
depending on which VCR setting was used during
recording:
Standard Play (SP)
5 x normal speed
Long Play (LP)
7 x normal speed

Picture search (fast)
The second press of the search or button will
search through your cassette at the following speed
depending on which VCR setting was used during
recording:
Standard Play (SP)
7 x normal speed
Long Play (LP)
13 x normal speed

Resume playback
When you have located the point at which you wish
to resume normal playback, press stop then play if
you were using the
fast forward
or
rewind
feature
(cassette in stop mode). If you were using the
picture search
feature, just press play.
Normal playback will resume from that point.

Note:
Your VCR
automatically records
index marks on the
cassette tape whenever a
recording is started.
The video index search
system will only work
once several recordings
have been made onto a
video cassette tape.
Occasionally, when a
recording has been
started at the very
beginning of a cassette
the index mark will be
missed.
When your VCR is
searching for an index
mark it will not fast
forward or rewind as fast
as normal because it is
searching for the index
marks.
A maximum of 9 index
marks can be searched
on a single video tape.
Automatic tracking:
When a video tape is
played, the digital auto
tracking system
automatically adjusts the
tracking of the VCR to
obtain the best picture
from the cassette tape.
index search feature

Select the index feature
Press the skip/index + or – button on your remote
control (in stop or playback mode).
An icon will display on-screen and your unit will begin to
search for the beginning of an index recorded programme.

Select an index position
Subsequent presses of the skip/index + or – buttons
will select the number of index positions to skip.
For example, your cassette is rewound to the beginning
and you want to watch the third recording on the tape;
press the
skip/index +
button three times.
Playback will start automatically when the index
position is found.

Set auto repeat
With a cassette loaded, press setup/menu to
access the MAIN menu.
Press the cursor
or buttons to highlight
AUTO REPEAT then press enter/select to choose
auto repeat ON (or OFF to turn this feature off).
Now, when the end of a cassette is reached, it will
rewind to the beginning and start to play again.
Press
setup/menu
to clear the on-screen display.
manual tracking adjustment

Make tracking adjustments
If white lines appear during playback or the picture
starts to shake, you can try to adjust the tracking
manually.
Press the trk+ or trk– buttons to obtain the best
picture.
An on-screen display will show you how much you are
adjusting the default tracking by.

Reset automatic tracking
If you cannot get a good picture with manual
tracking or you want to return to automatic tracking;
simply press eject to eject the cassette, then re-
insert it and play again.

When the auto repeat feature is switched ON your video
tape will play continuously.
Automatic tracking makes adjustments to ensure that you
see the best possible picture.
The video index search feature allows you to easily locate
the beginning of any recording made with your VCR.

one touch recording
With the one touch recording (OTR) feature you can make recordings quickly and easily.
Make sure your VCR is properly installed and all the channels are tuned in the correct order (see page 9).
Note:
Your VCR can record
in Standard Play (SP)
mode, or Long Play (LP)
mode.When you record in
SP, a 3-hour tape will be
able to record up to 3 hours
of programmes.When you
record in LP, a 3-hour tape
will be able to record up to 6
hours of programmes.
You may notice a slightly
lower quality of recording in
LP mode, especially when
using the pause/still or
picture search features.
If the record protection tab
has been removed from a
cassette or you try to record
onto a pre-recorded or
rented tape, the tape will
eject when you press the
rec/otr button.
OTR record time:
If you
wish to record for a set
amount of time (e.g.1 hour),
you can set OTR to record
only for that set length of
time.
Each time you press the
rec/otr button, record time
is increased as follows:
1st press continuous
2nd press 30 mins
3rd press 1 hour
4th press 1 hour 30 min.
5th press 2 hours
6th press 3 hours
7th press 4 hours
8th press 5 hours
9th press 6 hours
e.g.five presses will start
recording immediately but
stop after 2 hours.
You can add to the OTR
recording time at any point
by pressing the rec/otr
button again.

Select your VCR channel
Press the standby button to switch on your
DVD/VCR.

Insert a cassette
Insert a blank cassette into your VCR.
00:00 will appear in the front panel display.
Press the vcr button on your remote control to
switch to the VCR function of your unit.

Select a channel to record
Press the numbered buttons or the channel + or –
buttons on your DVD/VCR remote control to select
the TV channel you wish to record.
The channel numbers will show in the front panel display
as you scroll through or select them.

Select a recording speed
Press the display/call button to show the VCR on-
screen display.
Press the tape speed button to choose either
Standard Play (SP) or Long Play (LP) mode.
Press the display/call button again to clear the
VCR on-screen display.

Start recording
Press the rec/otr button to start recording.
Your VCR will begin recording.

Stop recording
Recording will end when either:
• The STOP button is pressed.
• The tape runs out.
• The VCR has finished recording for the selected
OTR time (see note).

timer recording
Timer recordings allow you to program your VCR to switch on and record a programme at a preset time.
Make sure your VCR is properly installed, all the channels are tuned in, and the correct time and date are set
before making a timer recording (see pages 8-9).
Note:
Your VCR's timer
allows up to 8 recordings
to be set up to one month
in advance.
Menus will only stay on-
screen for approximately
one minute after the last
button press. Be sure to
press another button
within one minute to
prevent the menus from
clearing from the screen.
If you make a mistake
when setting up a timer
recording, press the
cursor or buttons to
select the item to be
changed, then press the
cursor or buttons to
make your changes.
At the set time your VCR
will switch on and record
your programme then
return to timer record
mode.When all
programmes have
finished recording, your
VCR will return to
standby mode.
Tape speed:
Your VCR
can record in Standard
Play (SP) mode, or Long
Play (LP) mode.When
you record in SP, a 3-hour
tape will be able to record
up to 3 hours of
programmes.When you
record in LP, a 3-hour
tape will be able to record

of the programme you wish to record.

button to highlight the START
HOUR. Press the cursor or buttons to adjust
the START HOUR.

MINUTES. Press the cursor or buttons to adjust
the START MINUTES for your timed recording.

Set the recording end time
Press the cursor button to highlight the END
HOUR. Press the cursor or buttons to adjust
the HOUR.

MINUTES. Press the cursor or buttons to
adjust the MINUTES.

Set the channel & speed
Press the cursor button to highlight CH. Press
the cursor or buttons to select the channel
you wish to record.
Press the cursor
button to highlight SPEED.
Press the cursor or buttons to select a tape
speed for recording (see note).

Confirm your settings
Press enter/select to confirm your settings.
To programme further recordings repeat steps 2 to 5.
Press the timer rec or standby button to set
your timer recording.
If you press timer rec, your VCR will go into DVD mode allowing you to
watch DVDs while the TV programme is recording. If you press standby
your VCR will go into timer record mode (this looks like standby, but the red
timer rec symbol will appear in the front panel display).

edit timer recordings
You can easily check/change the details of, or cancel a timer recording before it takes place.
After a timer recording has taken place it will automatically be removed from the timer record menu.
Note:
Pressing the timer
rec button will only cancel
the timer record function,
it will not remove the
timed recording from the
timer record menu.
Please note that you will
not be able to access the
VCR functions of your
unit when in timer record

Your VCR features a counter which displays the amount of time that a video cassette has been playing, a 24-hour
clock and zero return for quick access to sections of video.
Note:
The counter can
be viewed both on-screen
and in the front panel
display of your unit.
The zero return feature
allows you to reset the
counter to 00:00 (on the
front panel of your unit) at
any point during playback,
and then automatically
rewind or fast-forward to
that point.

View the counter
Press the display/call button during VCR playback.
The counter displays the amount of time (in hours,
minutes and seconds) elapsed since playback began.

Counter reset
Before playback or recording, press counter reset
to reset the counter to 00:00 (on the front panel).
When you load a tape the counter will reset.
If you rewind a tape beyond 00:00, a minus sign (–) will
appear in front of the counter.

Zero return
After playback or recording, when your VCR is
switched on but stopped, press the zero return
button.The cassette will rewind or fast-forward
automatically until the counter reaches 00:00.
This feature is useful for returning to a point in a tape you
marked earlier (by pressing counter reset during
playback) and wish to view again.

Clock/counter display
You can choose to show either the CLOCK or the
TAPE COUNTER in the front panel display.
CLOCK displays the current time in the VCR display.
COUNTER displays the time elapsed (in minutes) since
playback started.
To switch between CLOCK or COUNTER, press the
clock/counter button.

NICAM stereo
Your unit features NICAM stereo, a system that allows you to watch and record video tapes in full Hi-Fi Stereo
(providing that the broadcast or recording is in NICAM or Hi-Fi stereo and your TV features NICAM stereo sound).
Note:
NICAM recordings
can only be made if TV
channel is broadcasting a
NICAM signal.
You will only be able to
hear NICAM/Hi-Fi stereo
recordings through your
TV if you have connected
your unit to your TV using
a SCART lead.
If you have connected
your unit to your TV with
only an aerial (RF) lead,
any Hi-Fi cassettes will
playback in MONO on
your TV.
By default, your unit
automatically detects a
NICAM broadcast and
switches NICAM Stereo
on whenever possible.
The AUDIO MIX playback
feature may not be
compatible with all
recordings.

When SETUP/MENU is pressed in DVD mode, the MAIN SETUP menu is shown. In the ‘Language’ option you can set your
chosen languages for DVD Menu, Subtitles and Audio and in the ‘Others’ option you can set the on-screen display (OSD)
language.The MAIN SETUP menu can only be accessed when a DVD is stopped or not loaded.
(A) MENU Languages
These are the language
options that the DVD disc

(B) SUBTITLE

To access the DVD features of your unit, you must first select
the DVD player by pressing DVD on your remote control.
Note:
Your unit is
capable of holding a still
video image or on-screen
display image on your
television screen
indefinitely. If you leave
the still video image or
on-screen display image
displayed on your TV for
an extended period of
time, you risk permanent
damage to your television
screen. Projection TVs
are particularly
susceptible.
Some DVD discs may not
display chapter numbers
correctly.
When playing DTS -
encoded Audio CDs,
excessive noise will be
heard from the analogue
stereo outputs.To avoid
possible damage to the
audio system, the
consumer should take

Press search during normal playback. Each press
will increase the playback speed to the following
factor: x2, x4, x8, x20 (with no audio).

Your DVD/VCR incorporates a repeat playback feature for repeat playback of parts or all of a DVD disc.
A-B repeat playback allows you to repeat play a section of video between two selected points.
