INTRODUCTION
The KD-XB XBlaster is a component video signal format converter for connecting
Microsofts X-Box and other video game systems to PC monitors with 15-pin VGA
inputs. It is connected between a standard personal computer (PC) and PC mon-
itor, and automatically detects when a signal from an X-Box or other video game
system is present.
The KD-XB XBlaster is the ideal solution when you want to play video games using
your existing high-resolution PC monitor and PC audio system. PC monitors
are
much less expensive than HDTV multimedia monitors and provide higher native
picture resolution.
HOW IT WORKS
The XBlaster converts component YPbPr (three-wire) video signals to component
RGBHV (five-wire) signals. Supported YPbPr video formats include 480p/60,
720p/60, and 1080i/30.*
In normal operation, video signals from your PC are passed through to your PC
monitor when your video game system is switched off.The XBlasters auto-sensing
circuit detects when the video game system is turned on and switches that signal
to the monitor. When you turn the video game system off, the video signal from
your PC is restored to the monitor.
The XBlaster can also be used to connect digital TV set-top boxes and DVD players
that use the YPbPr component video format to PC monitors. If you use the XBlaster
this way, you may need to make image adjustments to your PC monitor to obtain
the correct picture size and shape.
* Note: Many PC monitors will not accept 1080i/30 signals. Check your owner’s manual to be certain. Key Digital
Systems recommends using 480p/60 output from your game system as this format is supported by most PC monitors.
CONNECTING THE XBLASTER
Connecting your PC, XBOX game system, and PC monitor to the X-Blaster is a
simple process. You will need to use the XBOX accessory component video output
cable (XBOX part # K03-00001).
To use X-Blaster in component video mode, you must first display the XBOX dash-
board (control panel) to change settings. To view this menu, connect the XBOX
accessory component video cable to your XBOX system. The green plug of this
component video cable should be connected to the video input (yellow RCA jack)
of your regular TV so you can see the dashboard.
The XBOX dashboard should now appear in black and white on your regular TV.
Using the menu options, set the XBOX output resolution to 480p.
Make sure you use only the accessory component video cable for 480p mode.
No other XBOX accessory cables will work in this mode.
Next, disconnect the green cable from your regular TV and connect the red, green,
and blue wires to the component YPbPr video inputs on the X-Blaster, matching
color to color. Connect a 15-pin VGA/VGA computer monitor cable from the jack
marked “VGA Input to your computers video display card output.
Finally, connect the 15-pin plug from your computer monitor to the jack marked
VGA Output on the X-Blaster. Plug the supplied power adapter into the X-Blaster.
Turn on your PC and monitor. You should see normal computer video screens from
your PC. Use an RCA plug to mini (1/8”) plug adapter cable to connect audio from
X-Blaster to your PC’s sound card line level input.
Now you are ready to play the XBOX game on your VGA monitor. Load a game disk
into the tray. When the game starts, XBOX will switch to 480p automatically and
you will see the game on your PC monitor. A small red LED indicator will light when
a video game signal is detected. When you are finished playing, simply turn off
your video game system and your monitor will be switched back to your PC.
Note: You may notice that the converted image has shifted horizontally on your PC. This is normal, and can easily
be corrected by using the image position controls on your PC monitor, or by running PowerStrip, a freeware pro-
gram available for download at http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm.
Example: To correct image position with PowerStrip, run PowerStrip.exe and select the “Display Profiles tab. Then
select “Advanced Timing Options”, followed by “Position and Size Control”. After you have centered the image,
select “OK” to save your settings.
