Chapter1. Overview
1 ECDIS Overview
1-1 What is ECDIS?
ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display & Information System) is a system for safe navigation. Its scope
and performance are regulated under SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at
Sea) by IMO (International Maritime Organization). The scope reads as follows:
ECDIS, which must display all the information it posts, shall be established by an marine
surveyor who the government has appointed;
ECDIS provides reliable updates on ENC;
Its introduction shall reduce the workload in comparison with the use of conventional
paper charts;
ECDIS shall indicate any location of own ships sequentially;
ECDIS shall display additional information such as RADAR, ARPA, AIS, etc. to monitor
routes; and
ECDIS shall provide the appropriate alarms and indications for any error from the
apparatus and its displayed information.
As for the performances of ECDIS, IEC/IMO/IHO establishes their standard. The documentation for
the standard reads as follows:
Res.MSC.232(82)
S-57 Ed 3.1.2;
S-52 Ed 6.1(.1) (PL 4.0)
S-63 Ed1.1.2
S-64 Ed3.0.2
IEC-61174:2015 Ed 4.0;
IEC-62288:2014 Ed 2.0;
IEC-60945:2008 Ed 4.0; and
IEC-61162-1:2010 Ed 4.0 & 2016 Ed 5.0
SCD-2x00, an ECDIS system developed by Samyung ENC, observes all the regulations.
Currently available IHO standards are available at https://www.iho.int/mtg_docs/enc/ECDIS-

Chapter1. Overview | 1 ECDIS Overview
1-2 About SCD-2000
SCD-2000, an advanced navigation system, is developed according to IEC/IMO/IHO regulations.
Also it provides convenient user-oriented functions. This chapter explains the main functions and
conveniences of the system.
1. Main Functions
- Official S-57, S-63 ENC shall be shown on screen.
- Mercator projection used with standard datum according to WGS84;
- Links with external sensors like GPS, gyro, speed log, AIS, ARPA, echo sounder, weather
cock, wind gauge, BAM, BNWAS, Backup ECDIS, VDR, etc.;
- Inactive GPS for backup, to be triggered automatically when active GPS fails, while two
GPS sensors stay connected;
- Various monitoring functions such as [ROUTE MONITORING], [HEADING MONITORING],
[ANCHOR MONITORING], etc.;
- [ROUTE PLAN] for safe navigation;
- Storage for tracks of own ship, AIS, ARPA targets;
- Navigating tools like draw, calculator, EBL/VRM, notepad, LOP, etc.;
- Chart display modes such as [North-up], [Head-up], [Course-up], [Route-up], etc.;
- Alarms or indicators in accordance with each situation; and
- Two systems in operation for backup arrangement (option).
2. Conveniences
- Toolbar for the quick execution of frequently used functions;
- Shortcut keys for icons of each menu and toolbar;
- Easy of inputting both latitude and longitude;
- Number inputting by trackball wheel or arrow keys;
- Chart zooming with trackball wheel:
- Hiding menu and information window for a good view of the display;
- Storage of screen, track, route, target list, etc. to external files (.csv);
- [AUTO MOTION]: freely moving between pages in the works of figures drawing, chart
moving, etc. while letting the symbol of own ship disappearing out of the screen in no
work;
- As for Korea, available to indicate marine zoning map;
- In English and Korean;
- Available to adjust the transparency of menu and information windows; and
- Available to change the style of menu and information window.
