Copingwiththeirritationofeverydayobstaclescanbealleviated
somewhatbylearninghowtomanageyourwheelchair.Keepinmind
yourcenterofgravitytomaintainstabilityandbalance.

Whenassistancetothewheelchairuserisrequired,rememberto
usegoodbodymechanics.Keepyourbackstraightandbendyour
kneeswhenevertiltingthewheelchairortraversingcurbs,orother
impediments.

Donotattempttoliftawheelchairbyliftingonany
removable(detachable)parts.Liftingbymeansof
anyremovable(detachable)partsofawheelchair
mayresultininjurytotheuserordamagetothe

Aftermasteringthetechniquesoftippingthewheelchair,useoneof
thefollowingmethodstotacklecurbs,shortstairs,etc.
2.7.1Method1WheelchairWithStepTubes
Placefootonthesteptubeandbegintotiltthewheelchairtoward
you.Applyacontinuousdownwardmotionuntilthebalancepoint
isachievedandthefrontcastersclearthecurb.Atthispoint,the
assistantwillfeeladifferenceintheweightdistribution.
Rollthewheelchairforwardandslowlylowerthefrontofthe
wheelchairinonecontinuousmovementontothesidewalk.Pushthe
wheelchairforwarduntiltherearwheelsrollupandoverthecurb.
2.7.2Method2WheelchairWithoutStepTubes
Thismethodrequirestwoassistants.Thesecondassistantshould
bepositionedatthefrontofthewheelchairliftingupwardon
anon-removable(non-detachable)partofthewheelchairframe
whenliftingthewheelchairandstabilizingthewheelchairwhenthe
wheelchairisbeingloweredtotheground.
Thefirstassistantshouldstandonthesidewalkandturnthe
wheelchairsothattherearwheelsareagainstthecurb.Turnthe
anti-tipperssotheanti-tipwheelsarepointingup.Thewheelchair
shouldbetiltedbacktothebalancepointand,inonecontinuous
upwardmovement,therearwheelsshouldbepulledupandoverthe
curb.DONOTreturnthefrontcasterstothegrounduntilthe

2.8Stairways

ordownthestairs.Invacarerecommendsthat,if
possible,theuserberemovedfromthewheelchair
priortomoving.Invacarerecommendsusingtwo
assistantsandmakingthoroughpreparations.Make
suretouseonlysecure,non-detachablepartsfor
hand-heldsupports.

leverageandtiltsthewheelchairbacktothebalancepoint.
3.Afterthewheelchairhasbeentiltedbacktothebalancepoint,
theassistantbehindthewheelchairbacksthewheelchairup
againstthefirststep.
4.Thesecondassistant(positionedinthefrontofthewheelchair),
withafirmholdonanon-detachablepartoftheframework,lifts
thewheelchairupandontothenextstairaboveandsteadies
thewheelchairastheassistantbehindthewheelchairplacesone
footonthenextstairaboveandrepeatsprocess.
5.Thewheelchairshouldnotbelowereduntilthelaststairhas
beennegotiatedandthewheelchairhasbeenrolledawayfrom
thestairway.
6.Ifnecessary,rotatetheanti-tipperssothewheelsarefacing
down.

transferringonto.Alsobecertainthewheellocksare
engagedtohelppreventthewheelsfrommoving.
Whentransferring,positionyourselfasfarback
aspossibleintheseat.Thiswillpreventdamaged
upholsteryandthepossibilityofthewheelchairtipping
forward.
Thisactivitymaybeperformedindependentlyprovidedyou
haveadequatemobilityandupperbodystrength.
