Troubleshooting guide
Activation Error - The activation error means one of three possibilities:
A. The user account does not have permission to write to the scanmarker.license file. Make this change and retry.
1. On your keyboard press the Windows key and R at the same time to bring up the run dialog.
2. Type or paste this text into the window and click OK:
1. C:\ProgramData\IRISpen
2. This takes you to the folder where the IRISPen license file is stored.
3. Right click on the scanmarker.license file and choose Properties
4. Go to the Security tab and click on Edit
5. Highlight your user account and check the box for full control.
B. The scanmarker file referenced above does not exist. Remove and reinstall the software to resolve.
C. Software or Hardware firewall is blocking communication with the Activation Server. Temporarily disable any
security software while performing the activation.
Blank Output – No text output being produced
Open the software and go to the Other Options Practice screen tab and test the scan in that window.
The source of the difficulty is revealed by what is not happening in each pane of the practice screen.
1. Top - If nothing appears here then the Scanner is not connected or there is a driver issue
2. Middle - If blank reactivate again using the 'Validate activation' utility" in the Start menu/Start screen
3. Bottom - If blank remove reinstall the pen software.
Drivers - The light does not come on in the pen.
Assure that the software has been installed and the pen is plugged into a USB port directly on the computer. Use of
hubs, extension cables or docking station ports may cause unreliable operation.
1. Go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT)
2. Right click on the Pen Scanner 1.30 and choose Uninstall
3. When asked if to delete the driver, click No.
4. Restart the computer and verify the red light is activated in the pen
No CD drive on Computer.

Text to Speech – No speech heard
1. Start the IRISPen Executive and click the gear icon on the bottom left and verify a voice has been set.
2. If it is not working: go to Control Panel > Speech Recognition > Advanced speech options. Test and verify the
voice is working. If it is still not working: contact Microsoft support for assistance.
3. If it is working in there, then look for the software update icon next to the gear icon in the IRISPen Executive
software. If not present, leave the software open until the icon appears then perform the update.
Translation – No translation taking place
Change the translation engine from Bing to Google. This requires editing the registry and may call for outside
assistance.
1. Go to Windows search or Cortana and type or paste in; regedit
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
3. Go to Software
4. Go to Topscan
5. Go to settings
6. Right click on "Use google translation", and choose Modify. Change the default value data 0 in 1
7. Press ok
Scanning tips
1. Hold the pen upright to scan text. Do not scan in a 45 degree angle or less.
2. Make sure both sharp ends of the scanner tip always touch the page during scanning.
3. Scan one line of text at a time. Make sure the line is approximately in the middle of the two scanner tips.
4. Avoid scanning too slowly. Slide the IRISPen smoothly, in a fluid motion.
5. Avoid applying excessive pressure. Otherwise, the scanning may result in jerky, uneven motions.
