3 INTRODUCTION
3.1 General
The MEI 20 is a wire feed unit for
mechanized TIG welding. It is
designed for u se with the
MECHTIG 315 and PROTIG 315.
The unit consists of the
following components:
1. Tube frame
2. Feed unit
3. Drive motor
4. Reel holder
5. Cable
6. Wire conduit

The tube frame (1) is fitted with a handle, which is positioned so that the wire feed
unit balances when lifted.
The MEI 20 is designed for wire diameters Æ 0.6 to Æ 0.8 mm.
The reel holder (4) will accept reels with an outer diameter of 200 mm and a width of
60 mm. T he cover, which is removed to check or change the wire, is held by snap
fasteners.
A DC motor (3) with gearwheel drives the two feed rollers through a cog.
The motor is equipped with a tachometer generator which is connected to the power
supply for accurate control of feed speed. The feed rollers have two grooves for wire
and each groove is intended for a given wire size.
Two pressure rollers, which provide the necessary friction between the wire and the
feed roller, are mounted in a spring mechanism that allows the pressure to be
adjusted.
A cable (5) is provided for connecting the MEI 20 to the power source.
The MEI 20 has no controls of its own. It is controlled by means of the MECHTIG
315 or PROTIG 315 power source.

4 INSTALLATION
4.1 General
The installation sh all be executed b y a professional.
WARNING!
Rotating parts can cause injury, take great care.
4.2 Connecting the wire conduit
S Unscrew the bolt on the output side of the wire feed unit.
S Connect the wire conduit and tighten the bolt.
S Make sure the wire conduit is fitted correctly and that the end bottoms in the
socket.
S Undo the quick connector on the wire feed hose.
S Screw the holder onto the welding tool.
S Push the teflon liner into the tapered hole in the holder. Screw the liner in place.
S Screw the wire helix onto the holder on the tool. Screw the contact tip onto the
wire helix. Screw the contact tip holder onto the tool but do not fit the contact tip
into the holder yet.
S Open the feed rollers and pull the wire through far enough so that it will re ach the
full length of the wire feed hose to the tool.
S Straighten the end of the wire and file the end round.
S Insert the wire through the quick connector and push it through the teflon liner,
wire helix and contact tip holder.
S Refit the quick connector.
S Fit the contact tip in the holder.
4.3 Replacement / Insertion of filler wire
S Release the feed roller pressure spring.
S Rewind any existing wire out of the wire feed unit and remove the wire reel.
S Straighten the first 10--20 cm of the wire. File off any burrs or sharp edges on the
wire before feeding it through the wire feed unit. Make sure the wire passes
correctly through the grooves in the wire feed roller and through the contact tip /
wire conduit.
S Retension the spring.
S Press the reel cover in place.
S Start wire feed using the switch on the control unit / power source.

5 MAINTENANCE
5.1 General
Note:
All warranty undertakings given by the supplier cease to apply if the customer
attempts to rectify any faults on the machine during the warranty period.
5.2 Inspection and cleaning
Regular maintenance is important for reliable and safe operation.
S Cleaning and replacement of the wear parts of the wire feed mechanism should
take place periodically to ensure trouble--free wire feed.
S Note that an excessive pressure setting can result in abnormal wear on the
pressure roller, feed roller and wire liner.
6 ORDERING OF SPARE PARTS
MEI 20 is designed and tested in accordance with the EN 60974-- 1 (IEC
974--1) international standard.
It is the obligation of the service unit which has carried out the service or re-
pair work to make sure that the product still conforms to the said standard.
Spare parts are ordered through your nearest ESAB representative, see back cover.
When ordering spare parts, please state machine type and number as well as desig-
nation and spare part number as shown in the spare parts list on page 77.
