BCM Expansion Module and Central Answering Position (KIM,
KEM, CAP) Documentation Clarification.
Introduction
This document is intended to clarify the configuration options for the terminal (telephone
set) expansion modules that are supported by the BCM family of products. This
document will clarify both the limitations of the physical devices that can be attached to
the terminals as well as the administrative setting that can be applied to terminals with
expansion modules.
The physical expansion devices for each of the terminals will be described first followed
by the configuration option that can be applied.
This bulletin is clarifying the information in the following end user documents regarding
the Central Answering Position (CAP), the Key Indicator Modules (KIM) and the Key
Expansion Modules (KEM). For the remainder of this document, all key expansion
modules (KIM’s & KEM’s) will be referred to as KEM’s (unless otherwise indicated).
This document is to be used in the interim until the end user documentation is updated
with this information during the next major release.

Physical Terminal Expansion Modules
The terminals portfolio supported by BCM includes a number of hardware accessories
that expands the number of programmable keys available on the terminals. This allows
for fast access to speed dial or auto dial functionality, as well as allowing a central
attendant or secretary / administrative assistant to view the call status of a large number
of people or departments.
When an expansion module (KEM) is connected to a terminal (default configuration),
they are also referred to as ordinary KEM’s (or oKEM).
The specific characteristics of each of these accessories is summarized in the following
table and covered in more detail in the following sections.

The BST Central Answering Position is an expandable desktop telephone that allows
administrative assistants and emergency contact centers the ability to centralize and
efficiently distribute calls. By attaching the T24 Key Indicator Module (KIM) directly to the
T7316E, office administrators and emergency contact centers can transform the pace
and efficiency of their operations while maintaining an exceptional level of customer
service.

The IP Key Expansion Module (IP KEM) is a hardware accessory that expands the
number of programmable keys on the IP 2002 and the IP 2004. This allows fast access
to speed dial functionality, as well as allowing a central attendant or secretary to view the
call status of a large number of people or departments. The IP KEM is supported on all
releases of BCM50 & 450 but requires Release 4.0 for the BCM200/400 platforms.
The IP KEM provides:
Hardware module to expand line/feature buttons
Self-label display to customize desktop
Connects via accessory port on IP 2002 or IP 2004 phones
Powered by host phone via accessory port
BCM will support up to 4 KEMs per 2000 Series IP phone
A maximum of 12 IP phones with IP KEMs per BCM system can be operated in
the advanced mode.

The IP Phone 1200 Series includes two Key Expansion Modules to provide flexibility for
adding more keys to the IP Phone 1220 and IP Phone 1230. The extra keys can be
programmed as auto-dialers for one-touch calling, and will provide busy lamp field
indication for users on the BCM system. This allows these phones to better serve the
needs of attendant and receptionist functions, and increase productivity for any user.
Key features include:
LCD Expansion Module for the IP Phone 1200 Series offers 12 keys per module,
scalable to 7 LCD KEMs on an IP Phone 1220 or 1230
LED / Paper Label Module for the IP Phone 1200 Series offers 18 keys per
module, with LED indicators for line status and an easy-to-use paper labeling
system, scalable to 2 LED Paper-Label KEMs on an IP Phone 1220 or 1230.
Re-setting the KEMs to default (Coldstart).
You can press a sequence of keys (on the KEM) to trigger a cold start of a single IP
Phone KEM, or all IP Phone KEMs attached to the same IP Phone. The sequence must
be performed while the icons are flashing.
• To coldstart a single IP Phone KEM, press the ‘Single’ Cold star sequence
below.
• To coldstart all attached IP Phone KEMs, press the ‘All’ Cold star sequence
below

The IP Phone 1100 Series includes a Key Expansion Module that provides up to 18
additional line/programmable feature keys per module. The module is supported on the
IP Phone 1120E and the IP Phone 1140E.
Configuration Options – CAP Assignment
A CAP (Central Access Point) station acts as a central answering and monitoring point
for a group or a business. Any terminal that has an expansion module attached (oKEM)
can be configured to be a CAP. When a terminal is assigned to be a CAP, the expansion
module is now referred to as an enhanced KEM (eKIM or eKEM).
Assigning a station to be a CAP enhances the expansion modules capability to also
include access to and monitoring of lines in addition to stations.
You can configure a total of 12 CAP stations on a BCM50 or 24 on a BCM450 using the
CAP assignment setting. Please note that the CAP's can be any mixture of terminal type
as this assignment is independent of the hardware type.
The table referenced earlier in this bulletin is repeated here with an additional column to
show the maximum number of eKEM's that are supported on each terminal type.

In summary, the main difference between oKEM's and eKEM’s is the following:
- oKEM’s provide additional buttons to access & monitor stations.
- eKEM’s provide additional buttons to access & monitor status and lines.
- oKEM’s and eKEM’s provide additional buttons for fast access to auto dialers and
speed dialers.
- Assigning a station with KEM's attached as a CAP (in OAM), changes the KEM's from
oKEM’s to
eKEM’s.

Configuring CAP assignment
1. Ensure that the telephone you want to use for a CAP station is configured and
working.
2. Ensure that the CAP/KIM module has been installed on the appropriate telephone.
3. In the Element Manager, open the Telephony folder followed by Global Settings,
and select Cap Assignment.
4. The CAP # window appears.

5. Type the DN in the Set DN field for the telephones that you want to designate as a
CAP station.
6. Click on the next CAP to add another CAP station, or click elsewhere on the
navigation tree to save the setting.
