Smart-1 Installing and Removing

This document is for Smart-1 205, 210, 225, 3050 and 3150 models.
Important - We recommend that only experienced personnel install or
remove hardware components. Installing or removing components
incorrectly can permanently damage the Security Management
Appliance.
Preparing the Security Management
Appliance
Before you start to install or remove DIMMs, make sure that:
• You can connect to the WebUI or CLI to shut down the Security Management
Appliance.
• The Security Management Appliance is in a clean environment and on a
level surface.
• You can physically access and open the cover of the Security Management
Appliance.
• You have the Check Point DIMM upgrade kit.

Important
• To protect the Security Management Appliance and the memory modules
from electrostatic discharge damage, make sure that you are properly
grounded before you touch these components. For more, see the Health

• We recommend that you use the grounding wrist strap that is included in
the upgrade kit. The grounding plug on the rear of the Security Management
Appliance provides a chassis grounding point.
Upgrade Kit Contents
• Installation guide - Smart-1 Installing and Removing Memory
• Expansion DIMMs
• Upgrade kit sticker
• ESD grounding strap (anti-static)
• Screwdriver
To prepare the Security Management Appliance:
1. From the WebUI or the CLI, shut down the Security Management Appliance.
2. Use the power switch to turn off power to the Security Management
Appliance.
3. Remove the power cords from the Security Management Appliance.
4. Put on the ESD strap and attach the other end to a grounding point.
5. Loosen the Security Management Appliance cover screws.
6. Remove the top cover from the Security Management Appliance.

The diagram shows how to remove the Smart-1 3150 cover. The Smart-1
205, Smart-1 210, Smart-1 225, and Smart-1 3050 covers are similar.

The Security Management Appliance has a default memory configuration of
32GB: 8x4GB, with eight DIMMs.

Removing the RAID Card on Smart-1 3050
The RAID Card on the Smart-1 3050 can interfere with the insertion of DIMMs.
To make room, manually remove the card.
To manually remove the RAID Card

1. Remove the top cover.
2. Find the RAID card.
3. Release the RAID retention crew.
4. Open the swivel bracket to release the card.
5. Carefully pull the RAID card out of the PCI connector.
Note: Do not remove the SAS cable from the card.
Removing DIMMs
Make sure that you prepare the Security Management Appliance before you
remove DIMMs. For more information, see Preparing the Security Management
Appliance.
To remove DIMMs from the Security Management Appliance:
1. Put on the ESD strap and attach the other end to a grounding point.
2. Press the two retaining clips outward.
3. Carefully pull the DIMM up.

Important - Only touch the rear corners of the DIMM. Pressing on
the heat sink or other DIMM components can damage the hardware.
If necessary, pull one end of the DIMM, then the other, to gradually release
it from the contact pins.
Important - Make sure that there are no leftover parts inside the Security
Management Appliance.
4. Make sure the DIMMs are installed correctly.
a) Replace the Security Management Appliance cover without tightening
the appliance cover screws.
b) Connect the power cords to the Security Management Appliance.
c) Turn on the Security Management Appliance.
d) Make sure that the LCD screen shows the Security Management
Appliance model.
5. Tighten the Security Management Appliance cover screws to secure the
cover on the Security Management Appliance.
Installing DIMMs
You can add more DIMMs to the Smart-1 expansion memory sockets.
Important - The Security Management Appliance contains sharp
metal parts such as the heat sink fin and bracket that can cause
injury or damage the DIMMs.

To install DIMMs in the Security Management Appliance:
1. Find the DIMM slots on the system board.
The basic memory configuration of the Security Management Appliance
ships with these DIMMs installed:
• Smart-1 205: 2
• Smart-1 210: 2
• Smart-1 225: 2
• Smart-1 3050: 8
• Smart-1 3150: 8
2. Press on the two white retaining clips outward.
3. Align the new DIMM above the socket.
The top of the DIMM is smooth. The bottom edge has two different-length
sets of contacts, which connect to the slots on the socket.
Important:
• Only touch the top corners of the DIMM. Pressing on the heat sink or
other DIMM components can damage the hardware.

• DIMMs are not symmetrical. Use the hole in the DIMM to guide the
DIMM into the raised tooth in the slot.
4. Press the new DIMM into the socket until it clicks into position.
The retaining clips move into the lock position as you press the DIMM into
position.
5. Do steps 1 - 4 again for the other DIMMs.
6. Make sure that there are no leftover parts in the Security Management
Appliance.
7. Make sure the DIMM(s) are installed correctly.
Important - If you removed the RAID Card, replace it and secure the card
with its retention screw.
8. Replace the Security Management Appliance cover without using the
Security Management Appliance cover screws.
9. Connect the power cords to the Security Management Appliance.
10. Turn on the Security Management Appliance.
11. Make sure that the LCD screen shows the Security Management Appliance
model.
12. Use the Security Management Appliance cover screws to secure the cover
on the Security Management Appliance.

Attaching the Upgrade Sticker
After you install new DIMMs, attach the upgrade sticker on the Security
Management Appliance.
To attach the upgrade sticker:
1. Make sure that the Security Management Appliance operates correctly.
2. Attach the upgrade sticker on the Security Management Appliance cover.
Make sure that the upgrade sticker does not block the ventilation holes.
Verifying the Memory Configuration
To make sure that the memory configuration is correct:
1. In the CLI, enter Expert mode.
2. Run: # free –g –o
Example for Smart-1 225 with 16GB of memory:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 15 0 15 0 0 0
Swap: 16 0 16
Note - The amount of installed memory is shown in the row named
Mem
under the column named total.
For reasons related to available memory address space, the total
installed memory shown in the free utility is similar but not identical
to the actual installed memory.
In the above example, 16GB of RAM are installed on the system. This
corresponds to the 15GB of total memory shown in the free utility.
