Preparation

1. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawheretheequipmentisto be

used.Removeallstones,sticks,wire,and otherforeign

objectswhichcouldbetrippedoverandcausepersonal

injury.

2 Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclosefitting

slacksandshirt. Loosefittingclothesor jewelrycan be

caughtin movableparts.Neveroperatethismachinein bare

feetor sandals.

3. Disengageclutchleversandshift(ifprovided)intoneutral

("N")beforestartingthe engine.

4. Neverleavethismachineunattendedwiththe engine

running.

5. Neverattemptto makeanyadjustmentswhile engineis

running,exceptwherespecificallyrecommendedinthe

operator'smanual.

6. Toavoid personalinjury orpropertydamageuseextreme

carein handlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremelyflammable

andthevaporsareexplosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan

occurwhengasolineisspilledonyourselforyourclothes

whichcanignite.Washyourskin andchangeclothes

immediately.

7. Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.

Operation

the rotatingpartscanamputatehandsandfeet.

2. Donotoperatemachinewhileunderthe influenceofalcohol

or drugs.

3. Neveroperatethismachinewithoutgoodvisibilityor light.

Alwaysbesureof yourfootingand keepafirmhold onthe

handles.

4. Keepbystanders,helpers,pets,and childrenat least75feet

fromthe machinewhile itis inoperation.Stopthe machineif

anyoneentersthe area.

5. Becarefulwhentillinginhardground.Thetines maycatch

in the groundand propelthetillerforward.Ifthisoccurs,let

goof the handlebarsanddo notrestrainthe machine.

6. Exerciseextremecautionwhenoperatingonor crossing

gravelsurfaces.Stayalertforhiddenhazardsor traffic.

Maintenance & Storage

1. Removethe star handle knobs andcarriage

boltsfrom the lowerhandle, Figure3-1.

Before Starting

Gas And Oil Fill-Up

Servicetheenginewithgasolineandoil asinstructedin

theenginemanualpackedwithyourtiller.Readinstruc-

tionscarefully.

gasoline. Gasolineisextremelyflammable

and thevaporsare explosive.Neverfuel machine

indoorsor while the engineishot or running.

againstupperhandletoengagethefinedrive.Release

Wheel Position

Thetillerisshippedwiththewheeladjustedsuchthat the

unitsitslevel.Beforetilling,thewheelmustberaised.To

dothis,removetheclevisandcotterpins,raisethewheel

tothedesiredposition,thenreattachpinsto secure,

Starting the Engine

_L ARNING:Besureno one isstandingin

front ofthe tiller while the engineisrunning

or being started.

Referto the enginemanualshippedwith yourunit for

engine-specificinstructions.

1. Attachsparkplugwireto sparkplug.Makesurethe

metalcapontheendofthesparkplugisfastened

securelyoverthemetaltipon thesparkplug.

2. Makesurethatthefineclutchcontrolisdisengaged.

3. Forunitswith Briggs& Strattonengine,placethe

throttlecontrolinthe FASTposition.

ForunitswithTecumsehengine,moveleveronengine

toRUNposition.

4. Forfirsttimestart-up,firmlypressengineprimerfive

(5)times.Forall futurestarts,pressthree(3) times.

Waitabouttwo secondsbetweeneachpress.

5. Placelefthandongastank.Grasprecoilstarterand

pullropeoutslowlyuntilenginereachesthebeginning

ofitscompressioncycle(ropewillpull slightlyharder

atthispoint).

6. Pullropewith a rapid,continuous,fullarmstroke.

Keepa firmgripon handle.Letroperewindslowly.Do

notletrecoilstartersnapbackagainstengine.Repeat

untilenginestarts.

Stopping the Engine

1. MovethecontrolleverontheenginetotheSTOPor

OFFposition.

2. Disconnectsparkplugwirefromsparkplugand

groundagainsttheengine.

Using Your Tiller

Yourtiller(alsoknownas acultivator)isa precisionbuilt

machinedesignedforseedbed preparation,cultivating,

furrowing,andmulching.It isengineeredtominimize

thehardestworkinthevegetableorflowergarden,to

tillthesoilforplantingandcultivating,andtoperform

Fortilling,thedepthstakemustbeloweredandthe

wheelmustbe raised,Figure4-4.

Byincreasingthedepthof thedepthstake,theforward

speedofthemachineis reducedandtheworkingdepth

isincreased.Whenthedepthstakeis raised,theworking

depthofthemachineisreducedandtheforwardspeed

isincreased.Theworkingdepthofthemachinemay

bepredeterminedbysettingthedepthstakesothatthe

wheelsareaboutfourinchesfromthegroundwhenthe

tinesanddepthstakearerestingontheground.This

settingwillpermitaworkingdepthofaboutfourinches.

Whenpresettingtheworkingdepth,thehandlesshould

beadjustedsothehandgripsarea littleabovewaist.

Thetillerwillbelowerwhenthetinesand depthstake

penetratetheground.

Controlling Speed and Tilling Depth

Whentilling,leaveapproximatelyeightinchesof

untilledsoilbetweenthefirstandsecondtillingpaths,

thenmakethethirdpathbetweenthefirstandsecond,

depthisobtainedbygoingoverthegardentwoorthree

times.Passesshouldbe madeacrossthelengthand

widthof thegardenalternately.Rockswhichareturned

upshouldbe removedfromthegardenarea.

Thetypeof soilandworkingconditionswilldeterminethe

actualsettingofthedepthstakeandthehandlepressure

required.

Cultivating

Forcultivating,a twotothreeinchdepthisdesirable.

Thethrottle(ifequipped)shouldbesettocontrolforward

movementtoa slowwalkingspeed.Withtheoutertines

installed,theworkingwidthofthemachineis22or 24

inches.

Forcultivation,thismaybereducedto 13inchesby

removingtheoutertines,refertotheAdjustmentSection.

Whenlayingoutplantrows,be suretoallowenough

widthto permitcultivationbetweentherows.Ingrowing

cornor similarcrops,check-rowplantingwillpermitcross

cultivationandpracticallyeliminatehandhoeing,Figure

4-6.

Handle Pressure

Furthercontroloftillingdepthandtravelspeedcanbe

obtainedbyvariationofpressureonthehandles.

A downwardpressureon thehandleswillreducethe

workingdepthandincreasetheforwardspeed.An

upwardpressureon thehandleswillincreasethe

workingdepthandreducetheforwardspeed.

Thetillerhasmanyusesotherthantillingandcultivating

a garden.Oneoftheseisthepreparationoflawnarea

forseeding.Thetillerwillprepareadeepseedbedwhich

willbefreeofharduntilledspots,allowinga betterstandofgrassto grow.Thetillerisveryusefulforlooseninghard

soilforexcavationwitha shovel;Notedioushandworkwillbenecessary.Yourtillermaybe usedformixingcompost

in thepileorfor mixingitwiththesoilinyourgarden.Thisshouldbe doneafterthesoilhasbeenbrokentothefull

workingdepth.Thecompostshouldbe workedintoa depthofsix toseveninches.Thismaybedonebyworkingthe

lengthofthegardenandthenbymakingseparatepassesacrossits width.Theadditionofdecayedorganicmatterwill

substantiallyincreasethefertilityofyourgarden.Forproperdecayingaction,fertilizershouldbeappliedandworkedin

withthemulchmaterials.Breakingupleavesandstrawandmixingitwith severalinchesof soilallowsproperaeration

oftheplantrootsystemand retardsthegrowthofweeds.

Transporting and Storing the Tiller

Totransportthetiller,lowerthewheeland movethedepthstaketothehighestposition,Figure4-7.

Making Adjustments

Tine Width Adjustment

The tilling width ofthe unit is22 inches.Tilling

width can increaseto 24 inchesby removing

the clevis and cotter pins,sliding each outer

tine out one inch,and securing in this position

with the pins. Forcultivation,reduce thetine

width to 13inches byremovingthe outer tines

completely,Figure5-1.

preventrustingorwaterdamage.

to cleanyourtiller. Water canpenetratetight

Replacing the Belt

Yourtillerhasbeenengineeredwitha beltmadeof

specialmaterialforlongerlifeand betterperformance.

It shouldnotbe replacedwithanoff-the-shelfbelt.See
