SERVICE NOTES AND PRECAUTIONS:

Service notes:

1. Make sure that the power lead is connected properly to

Power source, otherwise damage to radio may result. If a

Battery, eliminator is used as a power source in place of a

Battery, it must be filtered and regulated. (The power sup-

ply capacity should be more than 5 amps).

2. Integrated circuits (ICs) are used in this unit. Because the

ICs are direct-coupled devices, as to all electronic equip-

ment, reading within 10% of the indicated values are acc-

eptable. Allowance must also be made for variations in

supply voltage. It is expected that any breakdown within

the IC results in drastic changes of the operating voltages

at the terminals.

3. When replacing a power output IC, remember to use the

IC specified in the parts list; Coat the IC-fin with silicon

grease.

WARNING

In using meters, signal generator and any tool in servicing

ICs, extreme care is needed.

DO NOT SHORT THE IC TERMINALS TO THE PATTERN

ON THE PC BOARD OR TO EACH OTHER. THE IC WILL

BE INSTANTANEOUSLY DESTROYED.

Adjustment procedure:

Alignment is performed at factory with laboratory equipment.

Therefore, before alignment is attempted, the unit should be

thoroughly checked for circuit troubles.

Notes:

1. Check for specified source voltage-DC, 14.4 volts.

2. Connect an AC voltmeter (AC VM) across speaker or

dummy load (4 ohms. 20W, wire wound resistor)….see

fig. 1-3. (ELECTRICAL ADJUSTMENTS).

3. Signal input must be kept as low as possible to avoid

overload and clipping (use highest sensitivity of output

indicator).

4. Repeat adjustment to ensure good results.

5. Non-metallic alignment tools, must be used (especially

at FM alignment).

6. for alignment location details, refer to CIRCUIT BOARD

PARTS LOCATIONS

Installation procedure:

1. To prevent a short circuit, remove the key from the ignition

and disconnect the battery.

2. Make the proper input and output wire connections for

each unit.

3. Connect the wiring harness wires in the following order:

ground, sealers, battery, ignition.

4. Connect the wiring harness connector to the unit.

5. Install the unit in your car.

6. Reconnect the battery.

7. Disentails by reversing the installation procedure.

CAUTION

● The rear-panel which also heat sink is very hot. Don’t

burn!!

● If your car’s ignition does not have an ACC position,

connect the ignition wires to a power source that can

be turned on and off with the ignition key. If you connect

the ignition wire to a power source with a connect voltage

supply, as with battery wire the battery may die.

● If the console has a lid, make sure to install the unit so

that the cover will not hit the lid when closing and open-

ing.

● If the fuse blows, first make sure the wires aren’t touch-

ing to case a short circuit, then replace the old fuse with

one with the same rating.

● Do not let unconnected wires or terminals touch metal

on the car or anything else conducting electricity. To

prevent a short circuit, do not remove the caps on the

ends of the unconnected wires or the terminals.

● Connect the speaker wires correctly to the terminals to

which they correspond. The unit may be damaged or

fair to work if you share the wires or ground them to

any metal part in the car.

● After the unit is installed, check whether the brake lamps,

blinkers, wipers, etc. On the car are working properly.

● Insulate unconnected wires vinyl tape or other similar

material.

SERVICE NOTES AND PRECAUTIONS

LASER BEAM SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

NOTES FOR TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

1. The pickup should always be kept in its conductive bag

until use.

2. The pickup should never be subjected to external pres-

sure or impact.

REPAIR NOTES

1. The pickup incorporates a strong magnet, and so should

never be brought close to magnetic materials.

2. The pickup should always be handled correctly and care-

fully, taking care to avoid external pressure and impact. If

it is subjected to strong pressure or impact, the result may

be an operational malfunction and/or damage to the

printed circuit board.

3. Each and every pickup is already individually adjusted to

a high degree of precision, and for that reason the adjust-

ment point and installation screws should be absolutely

never be touched.

4. Laser beam may damage the eyes!

Absolutely never permit laser beams to enter the eyes!

Also NEVER switch ON the power to the laser output part

(lens, etc.) of the pickup if it is damaged.

5. Cleaning the lens surface

If there is dust on the lens surface, the dust should be

cleaned away by using an air brush (such as one used for

camera lens). The lens is held by a delicate spring.

SERVICE NOTE AND PRECATUTIONS

Static Electricity

The CD pickup might suffer destruction by static electricity during spare-parts maintenance or replacement, although it is stable

when connected to the circuit in the CD unit. The destruction might caused because the laser diode terminal will be electrically

open. To prevent the terminal from being open, do the following steps.

1. When you replace the CD pickup, or remove the CD unit from the car stereo unit for any maintenance purpose, solder the

copper foil pattern indicated in Fig. 1 below to short-circuit the connector PCB and flexible wire of the CD unit. Perform your

intended maintenance work with the flexible wire short-circuited.

2. If the original CD pickup may possibly be reused, make a short circuit in the area indicated in Fig. 2 first. Then remove the

pickup and perform the work.

3. The CD pickup OPTIMA-725C2, which is supplied as one of the spare parts, is already short-circuited with the copper foil

pattern pre-soldered indicated in Fig. 2 below. To handle this CD pickup, keep the short circuit as it is. Then attach the pickup

to the unit and connect the flexible wire to the connector.

4. After performing the work, eliminate the short circuit by removing the solder at its respective short-circuited area described in

1, 2 and 3 above.

5. Insert a CD. If the E-01 or E-02 error should appear on the display on the face plate, check the area mentioned in 4 above,

where the short circuit may not have been eliminated.

6. Note that the semi-fixed VR equipped with the CD pickupOPTIMA-725C2 must not be turned. You can’t make any

Adjustment to the semi-fixed VR, which is completely adjusted when shipped at the factory.

Press SOURCE button 1 to select radio mode, the radio mode appears in the display together with the memory

band and frequency.

SELECTING THE FREQUENCY BAND……………..2

At radio mode, press BAND/LOUD button 2 shortly to select the desired band.

The reception band will change in the following order:

Press the TUN/SEK/TRK or button 3 shortly to activate automatic seek function. Press for several

seconds until “MANUAL” appears on the display, the manual tuning mode is selected. If both buttons have not

pressed for several seconds, they will return to seek tuning mode and “AUTO” appeared on the display.

AUTOMATIC MEMORY

STORING & PROGRAM SCANNING…………………4

- Automatic memory storing

Press AS/PS button 4 for several seconds, the radio searches for 6 strongest stations and stores them into

the presets of the currently selected band. While searching, ”LOC” appears on the display.

- Program scanning

Press AS/PS button 4 shortly to scan preset station. When the field strength level is more than the threshold

level of stop level, the radio is holding at that preset number for several seconds with release mute, then

searches again.

STORING PRESET STATIONS .................................5

The preset buttons 5 can be used to store 6 stations in each band (FM 1, FM 2, FM 3 and MW, LW) for convenient

access to your favorite stations.

• Programming stations ..... 1. Select the desired band, then tune in the station you want to store in memory.

2. Press and hold one of the preset buttons 5 for more than 2 seconds until the

corresponding preset button number appears. Repeat steps 1. and 2. to program additional stations.

• Quick tuning .................... Select the desired band, then press one of the six preset buttons 5.

Press LOC button 6 to set local or distant stations.

Use local position (LOCAL/LOC appear on the display) for reception of strong station, and distant position (DX

appears on the display) for reception of weaker stations. This function is effective during AUTO SEEK operation.

FREQUENCY SCAN OPERATION.......................….7

Press SCAN button 7 to set the function to frequency scan mode, which scans stations and stop for several

seconds at each receivable signal. Press SCAN button 7 again to stop

RDS (RADIO DATA SYSTEM) OPERATION FOR FXD-MP690R

SETTING RDS MODE………………………………1,2,3

- Turning RDS on

Turn the power on, then press AF/REG button 1 and release immediately to switch on or off RDS mode.

Whenever RDS is switch on, symbol “AF” appears on the display.

Select FM band, then program name is displayed on receiving a RDS station.

“AF” starts blinking if the broadcasting signal getting worse.

“ALARM” will be displayed when an emergency broadcasting is received, meanwhile sound output level will

be adjusted to the preset output level automatically when the volume control is set at minimum.

- Regional Program Operation

Press and hold the AF/REG button 1 for several seconds to switch on or off region mode.

Some broadcasting stations change their program from normal broadcasting to regional broadcasting for a

certain time period. When region is on, the current listening program remains unchanged. When region is off,

it allows the reception moves to the regional station.

- Using PTY to Select Program

PTY button 3 is operated as follows:

PTY MUSIC group PTY SPEECH group PTY off

While selecting PTY engagement, its selection is implemented by preset buttons as described in notes.

When PTY is selected, the radio starts to search corresponding PTY information, and stops if the

corresponding PTY information is detected.

If corresponding PTY information is not existed any more, PTY engaging is automatically exit to normal

mode.

Notes:

When PTY mode is engaged, the PTY switch is shared as follows:

PTY MUSIC group PTY SPEECH group PTY off

According to above 2 allotted group, the preset number is used for PTY selection as follows:

- Listening to Traffic Announcement

Traffic announcement can interrupt CD (MP3) play, AUX or radio listening when broadcast.

Briefly press the TA button 2 to select the TA mode on or off.

When TA mode is on, you will hear the Traffic Announcement when broadcast.

During traffic announcement, you can interrupt it by short press of TA button 2 without switching off the TA

mode.

By doing so, the set will return to the previous operating mode.

Long press on TA button 2 allows ON/OFF selection of TA LOCAL/TA DISTANT mode.

TA LOCAL will only allow traffic announcement from strong station to come through, TA DISTANT selection

will allow all received announcements to interrupt CD (MP3) play, AUX or radio listening.

The RDS data used are the PI, PS, AF, TP, TA, EON and PTY data.

 SEARCHING TRACK DIRECTLY...................………….…3,4,5

Press the AS/PS/MP3 button 3 for one time. It enters into “Searching track directly” in Digital Audio CD.

Set desired track by rotating VOL A-Z/0-9 dial 4, and then press BAND/LOUD/ENTER button 5 shortly.

Note:

The unit searches the track after few seconds, even if the BAND/LOUD/ENTER button

5 is not pressed.

 SEARCHING DIRECTORY OR FILE NAME.......……...3,4,5,15

Press the AS/PS/MP3 button 3 for two times. It enters into “Searching Directory or File Name” in Digital

Audio CD. The unit searches files and directories by name which is designated by the user with the VOL

A-Z /0-9 dial 4.

Explain as follows:

- Use rotary encoder VOL A-Z/0-9 dial 4 to select the characters A to Z, blank, 0 to 9, _, -, +.

- Press AUD/SEL/SET button 15 to confirm entry of each characters.

- Press BAND/LOUD/ENTER button 5 to start the title search.

In case the selected title is a directory name, display will show (‘ ‘), then

- Use rotary encoder VOL A-Z/0-9 dial 4 to list all songs under this directory and select

the title.

- Press BAND/LOUD/ENTER button 5 to confirm and start the play.

- Repeat the above steps if the newly selected title is again a directory.

 SEARCHING FROM ROOT DIRECTORY......….………3,4,5

Press the AS/PS/MP3 button 3 for three times, the unit searches file or directory from root directory by

VOL A-Z/0-9 dial 4. (D-DIR icon turns on if the name is directory). Display will list all available

directories and songs. Select the desired directory/songs by using rotary encoder VOL A-Z/0-9 dial 4 and

BAND/LOUD/ENTER button 5 to confirm.

If the selected title is a song, it starts to play.

If the selected title is a directory name, display will show

(‘ ‘), then

- Use rotary encoder VOL A-Z/0-9 dial 4 to list all songs under this directory and select the title.

- Press BAND/LOUD/ENTER button 5 to confirm and start the play.

- Repeat the above steps if the newly selected title is again a directory.

 SEARCHING FROM CURRENT DIRECTORY.………..3,4,5

Press the AS/PS/MP3 button 3 for four times, the unit searches file or directory from current directory by

VOL A-Z/0-9 dial 4. (D-DIR icon turns on if the name is directory). The current directory name is

displayed for a second and the currently playing file name is displayed. The user can select the directory

or file in the directory by VOL A-Z/0-9 dial 4. The selected file can be played by pressing

BAND/LOUD/ENTER button 5.

Note:

Press PAU button 11 to pause MP3 player. Press it again to resume play.

Press RPT button 13 to continuously repeat the same song. Press again to cancel repeat function.

The scan function enables you to listen to the first few seconds of the song. Press SCN button 12 to

activate/deactivate scan function.

During MP3 operation, press SHF button 14 to play songs in random order. Press again to cancel the function.

Press DISP button 9, and the following information is shown in sequence:

Clock → ID3 TAG (if available: song title, directory name, artist name, other contents…)

→ Radio frequency → PTY

“MP3” icon turns on when MP3 disc is played and blinks when search mode.

This unit can play the mixed-CD disc (the disc contains both CD audio tracks and MP3 files).

When you insert a mixed-CD disc into the CD slot, the “

” appears in the display and it starts to play the CD

audio tracks. And the operation is the same as that of the CD operation described in page 14.

If you want to switch to play MP3 files, press DIR

button 1 or DIR button 2, it will search the disc and start to

play the MP3 files. And the operation is the same as the MP3 operation described in page 16.

If you want to revert to play CD audio tracks, press DIR

button 1 or DIR button 2 repeatedly, until it reaches to

the end (i.e. when it selects the first directory or the last directory), and then press DIR

button 1 or DIR button

2 again, it will start to play the CD tracks again.

In this way, you can switch between playing CD audio tracks and MP3 songs repeatedly.

If a problem should occur while operating the CD player, one of the following error signs may be displayed. Refer

to the table below to identify the problem.

The unit has a pair of auxiliary input terminals (see WIRING figure on page 25). This allows you to listen to an

auxiliary audio source (MP3, portable cassette player, etc).

Press the SOURCE button 1 with the power on to switch from radio mode or CD (MP3) mode to AUX mode.
