4.
Drill a 9/16" (15mm) hole for the power switch at least 1"
above the DC power hole and in the center of the ammo
box. If using a 9/16" drill bit you may have to ream it out
a little for the switch to fit. Make sure it’s a tight fit. Wait
to install the switch until the wires are ready.
5. Correctly install the 18650 batteries by matching the
polarity of the board to the polarity of the batteries.
The dimple in the battery is the + side.
6. Install the battery board to the aluminum L-bracket
with the 2.1 x 5.5mm DC jack facing away from the L
side of the bracket and the batteries facing the bracket
with 10mm standoffs and included M3 screws.
7. Place two 3" strips of the included double-sided tape to
the L-bracket and install the bracket so it lines up with
the DC jack on the battery board. Stack two to three
small strips of double-sided tape together and use a
paper hole punch to make a hole in the stack. Place the
tape between the DC jack and the hole in the ammo
box to help keep it sealed. Once the battery board
is securely installed, place a piece of paper over it to
prevent any metal from touching the board.
8. Install the speakers by carefully placing the terminals
in first. Drill 1/32" pilot holes for the included #6 black
screws. Tighten the screws in a cross pattern.
1. Start by cutting two 2" holes for each speaker. The
bottom of the speaker hole should be 1-7/8" from
the bottom of the ammo box. The holes should also
be 5/8" from the outside edge of the ammo box. A 2"
hole saw works well if available.
2. At the top of each hole cut out 1-1/2" W x 3/8" to
make room for the speaker terminals. Use a Dremel
tool for this cutout if available. Jigsaw might crack the
plastic. Insert speakers to make sure the hole is large
enough, but don’t permanently install the speakers
until the battery board is in place.
3. In the rear of the ammo box drill a 1/4" hole 3-1/2"
from the right edge of the ammo box and 1-1/2" from
the bottom of the ammo box. This will line up with the
power jack on the battery board when it’s installed.
9. Use the 18 gauge
speaker wire and
crimp the large quick
disconnect to the red
wire and the small
quick disconnect to
the black wire. Always
strip at least 1/4" of
the insulator off to
expose the bare wire
and twist the bare
strands together
before crimping. One speaker wire should be around
11" and the other wire around 8". The bare wire ends
will go into the left and right speaker terminal screws
on the amp board.
10.
Use the black and red power wire with the black plug
that came with the battery board to wire to the switch.
Cut 5" away from the black plug both the red and black
wire. Crimp a quick disconnect to the red 5" wire. Place
both bare wire ends of the black wire into one quick
disconnect and crimp it. Identify the bronze terminal on
the switch and push the switch into the hole you made
in the ammo box. The black wire hooks to the bronze-
colored terminal on the switch and the other black
bare wire end hooks to the – power screw terminal
on the amp board. The red wire hooks to the center
silver terminal. Crimp the remaining quick disconnect
to the remaining red bare wire and hook it up to the
outer silver terminal. The other end of the bare red
wire goes to the +
power terminal screw
on the amp board.
Remove the paper
that was suggested
to cover the battery
board. Connect the
black power plug
to the black power
socket on the
battery board.
Make sure
all the wires
are securely
crimped inside
the quick
disconnects.
Soldering is
always better, but to make this kit solderless we had to
use quick disconnects. Secure the amp board to the lid
of the ammo box with the remaining double-sided tape.
Lift and carefully twist the IR silver receiver so the black
dot faces the front of the ammo box.
11.
Plug the power supply into the DC power jack in the
back of the ammo box to kick start the batteries. Turn
the power switch on and sync your Bluetooth device to
the amp board. Turn the volume up to 3/4 and close
the ammo box lid making sure none of the wires get
pinched. Pull the battery protect tab out of the remote
and play your favorite song. Point the remote at the
front of the ammo box to adjust the volume and EQ
settings. Make sure you charge the batteries all night.
You can turn the ammo box off with the remote, but
you’re in standby mode which still slightly drains the
batteries. Turn the power switch in the ammo box off to
reserve battery power. If you turn the power switch on
and noticed that the box has no power, plug the power
supply in for 5 seconds to kick start the battery board.
Additional Options
12. Additional things can be done to improve the sound.
Adding Acousta-Stuf Polyfill might help to prevent a
hollow-sounding ammo box. Small base ports might
give you a little extra bass.
13. To protect the speakers use a small speaker grill or
metal fan guard.
14. Cut holes in the front of the ammo box to manually
increase volume, use the line input, and insert flash
drives externally. The only mounting support would
be from the volume shaft nut and you would lose the
sound seal.
