e) Exhaust System
The generator set is equipped with an Airless Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.
The SCR system is used to decrease the mono-nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from the
engines exhaust pipe. The system is composed of several main components:
1. After-treatment diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) dosing unit.
2. After-treatment DEF dosing valve
3. After-treatment SCR catalyst.
NOTE: It is unlawful to tamper with, modify, or remove any component of the SCR system. It
is also unlawful to use DEF that does NOT meet the specifications provided or to operate the
equipment without any DEF. Either of these actions will also result in the ECM de-rating the
engine and eventually prevent the unit from running at rated speed and thus not producing
acceptable power. See Cummins documentation and website for more information.
DEF is required for an engine equipped with an SCR system. DEF is a fluid that is sprayed
into the exhaust gas prior to the after-treatment SCR catalyst. The DEF vaporizes and
decomposes to form carbon dioxide and ammonia. The ammonia reacts with the NOx
emissions over the after-treatment SCR catalyst to form nitrogen and water.
The after-treatment DEF dosing unit pumps DEF from the DEF tank to the after-treatment
dosing valve. The DEF dosing unit is electrically heated, and contains a filter that is a
maintenance item.
The after-treatment DEF dosing valve is coolant cooled, and sprays DEF into the exhaust.
The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the amount of DEF that is sprayed into the
exhaust. It also controls the DEF tank heater and DEF line heaters.
Even though the DEF freezes at approximately -12°C (11°F), the SCR system is designed to
be frozen and thawed. The DEF tank is heated by engine coolant, and the DEF lines and
dosing unit are electrically heated. No operator interaction is needed when operating in cold
temperatures; heating and thawing are controlled by the ECM.
The SCR system cleaning (also referred to as after-treatment regeneration) occurs to reduce
DEF deposits and condition the after-treatment system. The SCR system cleaning utilizes
the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) to build heat in the after-treatment system. The SCR
system cleaning occurs at semi-regular intervals during operation of the unit. The exact
interval between cleaning cycles depends on the loads the unit carries during operation.
While the cleaning cycle increases the temperature of the exhaust (up to 650°C) it does not
affect the stability of the output voltage of the unit.
6) Canopy
A composite enclosure, identified as a canopy, provides protection for the engine, generator and
electrical controls. The canopy is also designed to reduce the operational noise level in the immediate
area of the machine. The canopy is equipped with a bolted latch on the back left corner, which will require
the use of a wrench to remove the canopy. Once the bolt is loosened the canopy can be slid to the rear
and removed by two people for easy access to all engine and generator components.
We recommend using Simple Green® Industrial Cleaner & Degreaser or an equivalent to clean the
canopy and cable trays.
