Wire Feeder Set Up for Mig Welding
WARNING
Before connecting the work clamp to the work make sure the mains power supply is switched off.
CAUTION
Loose welding terminal connections can cause overheating and result in the male plug being fused in
the terminal. Remove any packaging material prior to use. Do not block the air vents at the front or
rear of the Welding Power Source.
NOTE
Depending on the type of wire you will be using the MIG Torch polarity may need to be switched. Follow
the wire manufacturers recommendation.
Connection to Transmig 350i,450i,550i for MIG (GMAW) Welding with Gas Shielded Mig Wire
When using a Gas Shielded wire with the 4RT or VAF4 Wire Feeder, you need to have an external gas source at-
tached to the 4RT or VAF4 Wire Feeder.
For most Gas Shielded wire, connect the Work Lead to the negative - terminal on the front of the Transmig Power
Source and connect the Welding Power Cable from the back of the 4RT or VAF4 to the positive + terminal on the
front of the Transmig Power Source. Check with wire manufacturer for recommended polarity. Welding current
ows from the Power Source via heavy duty bayonet type terminals. It is essential, however, that the male plug is
inserted and turned securely to achieve a sound electrical connection.
The 4RT or VAF4 Wire Feeder requires an interconnection cable assembly to connect from the back of the 4RT or
VAF4 to the front of the Transmig welding power source. 2, 8 and 15M lengths are available. The 4RT uses a 10
pin interconnection cable assembly and the VAF4 Wire Feeder uses a 19 pin interconnection cable.
Connect the MIG Torch to the front of the 4RT or VAF4. See Figure 1 and Figure 2.

Connection to Transmig 350i,450i,550i for MIG (FCAW) Welding with Gasless MIG Wire
When using a gasless ux cored wire, you do not need to have an external gas source attached to the 4RT or VAF4
Wire Feeder. If one is, then make sure it is turned off.
For most Self Shielded Flux Cored Wire, connect the Work Lead to the positive + terminal on the front of the Power
Source and connect the Welding Power Cable from the back of the 4RT or VAF4 to the negative - terminal on the
front of the Power Source. Check with wire manufacturer for recommended polarity. Welding current ows from
the Power Source via heavy duty bayonet type terminals. It is essential, however, that the male plug is inserted
and turned securely to achieve a sound electrical connection.
