_ Safe Operation Practices for Ride-On Mowers

FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY tNSTRUCT!ONS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH°
I. GENERAL OPERATION
• Read, understand, and follow all instructionsin the manual
and onthe machine before starting.
= Only allow responsible adults, who are familiar with the
instructions,to operate the machine_
o Clear the area of objects such as rocks, toys, wire, etco,
whichcould be picked up and thrownby the blade,,
. Besure thearea isclear ofotherpeopfebefore mowing, Stop
machine if anyone enters the area°
° Never carry passengers_
o Do notmow in reverseunlessabsolutelynecessary, Always
lookdown and behind before and whilebacking.
• Be aware ofthe mower discharge directionand do notpoint
it at anyone., Do not operate the mower without either the
entire grass catcher or the guard in place.
o Slow down before turning.
- Never leave a running machine unattended. Always turnoff
blades, set parking brake, stop engine, and remove keys
before dismounting,,
° Tum off bladeswhen not mowing,,
o Stop engine before removing grass catcher or unclogging
chute°
• Mow onlyin daylightor good artificiallight°
o Do not operate the machine while under the influence of
alcohol or drugs_
• Watch fortrafficwhen operatingnear orcrossingreadways_
o Use extra care when loading or unloadingthe machine into
a trailer or truck.
iI. SLOPE OPERATION
Slopes are a major factor related to loss-of-control and
tipover accidents, which can result insevere injury or deatho
All slopes require extra caution. If you cannot back up the
s!ope or if you feel uneasy on it, do not mow it.
DO:
• Mow up and down slopes,not across,
° Remove obstacles such as rocks,tree limbs, etc,,
,, Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Uneven terrain could
overturnthe machine. Ta//grass can hide obstac/es,,
° Use slowspeed. Choose a lowgear sothatyouwillnothave
tostop or shiftwhile on theslope.
° Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for wheel
weightsor counterweightsto improve stability,
° Use extra care with grass catchers or other attachments,,
These can change the stabilityof the machine.
•, Keep al! movementon the slopes s/owand gradua/o Donot
make sudden changes inspeed or direction.
° Avoid starting or stoppingon a slope,, tf tireslose traction,
disengage the blades and proceed slowlystraightdownthe
s!ope.
DO NOT:
. Do notturnonslopesunlessnecessary, andthen, turnslowly
and gradua!]ydownhill,if possible, '
. Do not mow near drop-offs,ditches, orembankments. The
mower could suddenlyturnover if a wheel isover the edge
of a cliffor ditch, or if an edge caves in,
o Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced tractioncould cause
sliding°
° Do not trytostabilize themachine byputtingyourfoot onthe
ground°
. Do not use grass catcher onsteep slopes.,

III. CHILDREN
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the
presence of children. Children are often attracted to the
machine and the mowing activity. Never asstime that
children will remain where you last saw them_
. Keepchildrenoutof the mowingarea and under the watchful
care ol another responsible adult.
• Be alert and turn machine off if children enter the area,
° Before and when backing, look behind and down forsmall

° Never carry children_ They may fall off and be seriously
injuredor interfere with safe machine operation,,
• Never allow childrento operate the machine_
° Use extra care when approaching blind comers, shrubs,
trees, or other objectsthat may obscure viston,,

SERVICE
Use extracareinhandlinggasolineand other fuels. They are
flammable and vaporsare exptostva.
Use only an approved container°
Never remove gas cap or add fuel with the engine
running. Allow engine to cool before refueling,, Do not
smoke.
Never refuelthe machine indoors_
Never store the machine or fuel container inside where
there isan open flame, suchas a water heater.
° Never run a machine inside a closed area.
o Keep nutsand bolts,especially blade attachmentbolts, tight
and keep equipment in gooa condition,
• Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper
operationreguladyo
° Keepmachine freeof grass, leaves, orotherdebris build-up,,
Clean oll or fuel spillage_ Allow machine to cool before
storing°
• Stop and inspect the equipment if you strike an object°
Repair, if necessary,before restarting,
° Never make adjustmentsor repairswiththe engine running.
° Grasscatchercomponents are subjecttowear,damage, and
deterioration, which could expose moving parts or allow
objects to be thrown. Frequently check components and
replacewithmanufacturer's recommended parts, when nec-
essary.
° Mower blades are sharp and can cuL Wrap the blade(s) or
wear gloves,and use extra cauUonwhen servicing them,=
• Check brake operation frequently,_ Adjust and service as
required,,
