Introduction 1
Congratulations!
Congratulations and thank you for having purchased Generalmusic’s PK5 Oriental, a
workstation packed with features and functions that unite Oriental and Western music.
PK5 Oriental offers high quality sounds, automatic accompaniments, an easy-to-oper-
ate user interface, a dedicated Arabic Scale panel section, two Sound Groups with 8
Arabic Sounds each, three Style Groups, each with 8 Oriental Styles, an Arabic Drumkit
and a special Oriental Demo Style.
THE OWNER’S MANUAL
Don’t use it as a paperweight: read it. It helps to understand how PK5 Oriental operates,
saving much time.
The first part of the manual is divided into several User Guides while the second part
contains the Appendix with various tables and MIDI specifications.
SPECIFICATIONS
Polyphony & multitimbricity
PK5 Oriental is 32 note polyphonic (maximum), 8 part multi-timbral (Style and
Song Style mode). Each part is assigned to a track. In Real Time mode, 4 tracks
(maximum) are assigned to the keyboard.
Sound Generation
The Sounds are based on PCM and Wavetable technology. The Sounds are based on
elaborated sampled waveforms. The instrument’s 32 oscillators generate “single”
(32-note polyphonic) or “layer” sounds (16 note polyphonic).
ROM Sounds
The PK5 Orientals ROM (Read Only Memory) contains 273 Sounds including
Arabic sounds and an Arabic Drumkit.
Arabic Scale/Memory
A special section consisting of twelve buttons arranged in keyboard octave style and
a set of buttons which provide several associated functions. Each Arabic Scale but-
ton lowers the corresponding note of the keyboard by 1/4 of a tone in real time. The
Memory section provides 3 locations for preset Arabic Scales, a general Cancel but-
ton and a Store command.
Digital Signal Processor
PK5 Oriental features two on-board Digital Signal Processors, controlled in real
time, which enrich the sounds with effects (reverbs and modulations). Two different
effects (1 Reverb and 1 Modulation/Delay) can be assigned and memorised to each
Performance.
Sequencer
An on-board 8-track Sequencer that allows the recording of Song Styles (real time
recording method). User-programmed sequence data are conserved in the battery-
backed System-RAM.
Automatic Accompaniments
PK5 Oriental features 96 ROM Styles (including 3 groups of Oriental Styles) which
provide automatic accompaniments for the three real time keyboard sections (Upper
1, Upper 2, Lower). Each Style has 2 Variations consisting of Basic, Intro, Fill and
Ending patterns, totalling 20 different patterns.
2 Introduction
MIDI
Thanks to the fully implemented MIDI features, PK5 Oriental can act as a Master
controlling device, or as a 16 part multi-timbral slave device, regardless of the cur-
rent playing mode.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
1. The PK5 Oriental should contain the following items from the factory:
a) Instrument;
b) Music stand;
c) Owner’s manual.

USER INFO
The Manual Bass track corresponds to the Bass accom-
paniment track of the current Style. When the Styles are
not playing, you can choose to play the Bass accompani-
ment track manually by “disconnecting” the Bass accom-
paniment track from the Styles.
10 User Guide
A fourth sound (PickBass) is now added to the other three. You will hear a layered
combination of two sounds on the right and a layered combination of two sounds on
the left (below note F#3).
5. Deactivate LOWER (if on) and play on the left part of the keyboard.
The LED of the Lower button goes off and the Lower keyboard sound is cancelled,
leaving the “Bass” Sound on its own.
It is also possible to set PK5 Oriental to power up with the Manual Bass active (by
memorising the panel situation with Arrange ON/OFF = ON). Manual Bass is also
governed by the AUTO MANUAL BASS option found in the ARRANGE MODE
function (see page 43). The default setting of AUTO MANUAL BASS is ON.
PLAY WITH A PRESET ARABIC SCALE
The Arabic Scale Memory section contains 3 preset (ROM) Arabic Scales (factory-set
which cannot be permanently erased from memory).
1. Press one of the 3 Memory buttons (1, 2 or 3) to select a preset Arabic Scale
The button pressed is identified by a red led above the button which lights up. Each
button activates a different Arabic Scale.
At the same time, one or more buttons of the “Arabic Scale” activate (a red led lights
up above the active pad). Each active button identifies the note affected on the key-
board. The pitch of the affected note will be lowered by 1/4 of a tone. Recalling an
Arabic Scale affects the keyboard regardless of how it is currently set to play; in Split
or Layer mode.
To recall a different preset Arabic scale, simply press one of the other Memory but-
tons. The currently selected button will cancel and the Arabic Scale will change
configuration according to which Memory button is pressed.
2. To cancel the selected Arabic Scale, press the Cancel button.
The preset Arabic Scale cancels and restores the instrument to the normal (equal)
playing scale.
ADJUST THE VOLUME
General volume
1. Adjust the overall volume with the VOLUME slider.
The VOLUME control (slider) regulates the general volume of the instrument. A
comfortable level is about two thirds of the maximum course of the slider.
Individual sound (track) volumes
The volume of the Sounds assigned to the keyboard sections (or tracks) can be adjusted
with respect to the overall volume of the instrument.
2. Press Function button F9 corresponding to the Upper 1 keyboard section.
The track starts to flash (“Upper 1” is shown flashing).
3. Use the Tempo/Data +/– buttons to adjust the volume of the Upper 1 keyboard section.
The bar graphs shown under the flashing keyboard section change with a change of
volume. The lower the volume, the less bars appear.
Use the same procedure for other keyboard sections (or tracks).
The part of the display above the Bass
track (usually dedicated to the Measure
counter) shows the letters “BAS” indi-
cating that Manual Bass is active (shown
only when the sequencer is off).
Note: When the sequencer is on (Playback or Record
mode), Manual Bass is automatically disabled.
Note: Refer to the Arabic Scale chapter 3 for full details
of the Arabic Scale/Memory section.

• recall different Styles.
Select Oriental (or Western) Styles and play with automatic
accompaniments

4. Press START/STOP (the big red button under the display).
The Drum accompaniment (drum track) starts to play.
5. Play a chord with the left hand (below split point F#3) and a melody with the right.
You’ll hear a fully orchestrated arrangement accompanying the keyboard sound(s).
The combination of sounds that play and the keyboard mode will depend on the
Style selected.
You can change the combination of keyboard sounds by intervening on the key-
board activators (Upper 2, Upper 1 and Lower).
Add Pitch Bend to your playing
While you play, you can modify the pitch of the keyboard sounds by using the Bender,
that is, the wheel located to the left of the keyboard.
To obtain Pitch Bend, move the Bender Up or Down.
Pitch Bend is a “glide” (or glissato) effect which simulates the effect heard in certain
instruments (trombone, guitar, violin, etc.).
Add Modulation to your playing
While you play, you can add Modulation to the keyboard sounds by pressing the Modu-
lation button, located above the Pitch Wheel.
To obtain Modulation, hold down the MODULATION button.
Modulation is an oscillating effect which simulates the vibrato of a violin, a clarinet, the
human voice, etc..
Play with Effects or bypass them
One or both effects (REVERB and CHORUS) will be active (shown by the corre-
sponding display indicators), according to how the current Performance is programmed
(in Style or RealTime modes).
You can temporarily modify the way in which a Performance or Style is processed by
changing the On/Off configuration of the REVERB and CHORUS panel buttons.
When the corresponding display indicator is on, the sounds of the current Performance
are being processed by the effect; when the display indicator is off, the effect is by-
passed.
Bypass
1. To bypass an effect, press the corresponding panel button.
The corresponding display indicator goes off, indicating that the current Perform-
ance is not processed by the relative effect.
To activate an effect
2. Press the corresponding panel button.
The corresponding display indicator turns on to show that the current Performance
is processed by the relative effect.
Note: If the Manual Bass is currently active, it will can-
cel automatically (‘BAS’ indicator turns off in the dis-
play) when you press START/STOP.
Note: 22 Reverbs (Reverb) and 22 Modulation/Delays
(Chorus) are available in the PK5 Oriental.
Note: Modulation will be generated for as long as the
button is held pressed.
