Welcome to ORiNOCO, the easy way to wireless computing. Building your
own wireless network has never been easier.
This book introduces you to the ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II Access Point (AP),
and will help you to get your network “on the air” within a snap. It describes
the most common configurations and a quick start set-up.
To install and manage ORiNOCO products, it is assumed that you have a
working knowledge of installation procedures for network operating systems
under Microsoft Windows.

About the WavePOINT-II AP 1
The ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II AP bridge is a modular unit with an integrated
ethernet interface and two PC Card slots, that enable you to use your access
point with ORiNOCO PC Cards.
The dual slot design allows you to configure the access point to operate with
almost any combination of the wired and wireless network interfaces listed
above. This way your access point provides easy migration paths between
various generations of ORiNOCO products.
The ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II AP is a transparent Media Access Control
(MAC) bridge that exists in two versions:
ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II AP.
ORiNOCO Outdoor Router.
ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II Access Point 1
The access point is a wired to wireless bridge that you can use to connect
wireless cells to one another or to a wired (ethernet) Local Area Network
(LAN). The access point can serve mobile wireless stations roaming
between various locations within a network premises.

ORiNOCO Outdoor Router 1
The ORiNOCO Outdoor Router bridge

has been designed to serve a
wireless backbone between wireless cells and/or wireless (outdoor) antenna
link.
The ORiNOCO Outdoor Router device is based on the same hardware
design as the ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II AP. Besides its wireless point-to-
point bridging functionality, the ORiNOCO Outdoor Router also supports the
access point features as described on the previous page.

The ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II AP, together with ORiNOCO PC Cards,
enables you to build a variety of network configurations:
A wireless LAN environment for mobile computers.
A flexible network, that allows for adding and/or relocating workstations
quickly and easily.
A migration path between various generation ORiNOCO infrastructures.
An inexpensive alternative to leased lines for building-to-building links
(an outdoor solution).

ORiNOCO Range Extender Antenna
An omni-directional antenna for indoor use that enables you to extend
the wireless range of the access point when connected to an ORiNOCO
PC Card (see Figure 2-5 on page 2-11).
ORiNOCO Vehicle Mount Antenna
A more ruggedized omni-directional antenna for outdoor use that allows
for mounting an external ORiNOCO antenna in an industrial
environment.
ORiNOCO Outdoor Antenna kit
A complete outdoor antenna kit that includes an ORiNOCO Outdoor
Router, Lightning arrestor, Outdoor antenna cable and antenna.

WavePOINT-II AP

This chapter describes how to:
Install the ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II AP hardware.
Install the ORiNOCO network interface(s).
Power up the device to start operation in Basic Access mode.
To install the ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II AP you will need:
One ORiNOCO WavePOINT-II AP unit.
One or more ORiNOCO PC Card(s).
(Optional) An Ethernet backbone
(either 10Base-T or 10Base2).
