Brakesaredesignedtocontrolthespeedandtostopthebike.Maximumbrakingforcefor
eachwheeloccursatthepointjustbeforethewheelstopsrotatingandstartstoskid.Once
thetireskids,youlosemostofthestoppingforceandalldirectionalcontrol.
Youneedtopracticeslowingandstoppingsmoothlywithoutlockingupthewheel.The
techniqueiscalledprogressivebrakemodulation.Insteadofjerkingthebrakelevertothe
positionwhereyouthinkyouwillgenerateappropriatebrakingforce,squeezethelever,
progressivelyincreasingthebrakingforce.Ifyoufeelthewheelbegintolockup,release
pressurejustalittletokeepthewheelrotatingjustshortoflockup.
Itisimportanttodevelopafeelfortheamountofbrakeleverpressurerequiredforeach
wheelatdifferentspeedsandondifferentsurfaces.Tounderstandthis,experimentby
walkingyourbikeandapplyingdifferentamountsofpressuretoeachbrakelever,untilthe
wheellocks.
CAUTION:Somebicyclebrakes,suchaslinear-pullanddiskbrakes,areextremely
powerful.Youshouldtakeextracareinbecomingfamiliarwiththesebrakesand
exerciseparticularcarewhenusingthem.Applyingthesebrakestoohardortoo
suddenlycanlockupawheel,whichcouldcauseyoutolosecontrolandfall.
CAUTION:Suddenorexcessiveapplicationofthefrontbrakemaypitchtherider
overthehandlebars,causingseriousinjuryordeath.
ApplyingBrakes
Whenyouapplyoneorbothbrakes,thebikebeginstoslow,butyourbodywantsto
continueatthespeedatwhichitwasgoing.Thiscausesatransferofweighttothefront
wheel,or,underheavybraking,aroundthefrontwheelhub,whichcouldharmyou.
Awheelwithmoreweightonitwillacceptgreaterbrakepressurebeforelockup;awheel
withlessweightwilllockupwithlessbrakepressure.
Dothefollowingasyouapplybrakesandyourweightshisforward:
•Shiyourbodytowardtherearofthebike,totransferweightbackontotherearwheel;
•Atthesametime,decreaserearbrakingandincreasefrontbrakingforce.
•Thisisimportantonsteepdescents,becausedescentsshiweightforward.
Thekeytoeffectivespeedcontrolandsafestoppingarecontrollingwheellockupand
weighttransfer.Practicebrakingandweighttransfertechniqueswherethereisnotrafficor
otherhazardsanddistractions.
Everythingchangeswhenyourideonloosesurfacesorinwetweather.Tireadhesion
reduces,sothewheelshavelesscorneringandbrakingtractionandcanlockupwithless
brakeforce.Moistureordirtonthebrakeshoesreducestheirabilitytogrip.Thewayto
maintaincontrolonlooseorwetsurfacesistogomoreslowly.
AdjustingBrakes
IfeitherbrakeleveronyourbikefailstheMechanicalSafetyCheckyoucanrestorebrake
levertravelbyturningthebrakecableadjustingbarrelcounterclockwise,thenlockthe
adjustmentinbyturningthebarrel'slocknutclockwiseasfarasitwillgo.Iftheleverstillfails
theMechanicalSafetyCheck,orifyouhaveanyquestionaboutwhetheryourbrakesare
