Addendum to Export Unit Installation Instructions
Split Systems & All Packaged Equipment
This addendum is applicable to all units manufactured for export-only and intended for use with
R-22 refrigerant. As of January 1st, 2010, all equipment manufactured of this configuration will
be shipped with a Nitrogen holding charge in compliance with U.S. Code of Federal Regulations
(CFR) Title 40 part 82.
Customer orders may contain equipment manufactured in both 2009 and 2010. All units
manufactured prior to 1 Jan, 2010, have been factory charged with the amount and type of
refrigerant as shown on the unit rating plate. No actions should be necessary on these units.
ONLY units manufactured AFTER December 2009 will need to be charged
in the field with R-22 refrigerant.
To determine if a unit will require a field charge of R-22, inspect the unit rating plate and serial
#. The serial number is shown at the top of the unit rating plate and consists of a 12 digit code
with 5 parts.
Export Only Equipment
Any unit with a Year of Manufacture code in the unit serial # of 10 (or greater) and shows R-22
as the factory charged refrigerant, will require that the unit be charged with the procedure below
prior to operation.
WARNING: DO NOT operate any unit while it contains a Nitrogen holding charge. Doing
so may damage the units compressor.
To properly charge these units:
1) Read all Installation Instructions first.
2) Complete any brazing operations. (e.g. Split system line-sets)
3) Purge the nitrogen holding charge.
4) Evacuate the unit to 350-500 microns.
5) Allow the unit to remain under vacuum for at least 30 min.
6) Weigh-In the proper amount of new (or reclaimed) R-22 refrigerant. Refer to the Unit Rating
