Startup Checklist
Check over the installation.
Can you access the detector box easily enough so you can make adjustments inside it?
Is the analyzer standing straight, on a horizontal run of process pipe?
Does the analyzer have/need a sun shade?
Is there anything else that may obviously be a problem?
Check the sample tap area for adequate heat (anges, steam-jacketed ball valve, steam-jacketed spool
pieces, if any).
To test for adequate heat, rub a piece of solid sulfur on any of the anges or any other area under the analyzer. If the
sulfur melts quickly, it is hot enough.
If it is not hot enough:
Make sure that power to the analyzer is removed and then remove the sheet metal cover plate and insulation. Place the
sulfur on the surface of the ange inside the cell oven all the way at the bottom.
Take measurements for installation of the probe.
Measure from about 1.5” above the compression tting on the ange inside the cell oven to the center of the process
pipe. If the measurement is less than 3 feet, cut off the straight-cut end of the probe supplied with the analyzer to the
required length. If the measurement is more that 3 feet, the customer will have to supply the required length of 1/2” OD
SST tubing (preferably 316) x 0.035” wall. Angle cut one end, which will go into the process pipe. If the probe tube has
to be greater than 5 feet, use tubing with a wall thickness heavier than 0.035”.
Install the probe.
Separate the main sample inlet ball valve from the demister (packed separately).
Be careful not to lose the small “cross stopper” inside the valve where it attaches to the demister. This cross stopper
sits on a “ledge” just inside the upper part of the valve. The only thing that holds it in place is the demister connection. It
is important for this piece to be in place when you re-install the demister to prevent the lower demister pad from working
its way down into the ball valve and possibly damaging the valve seal.
Swage the probe tube to the 1/2” compression tting on the bottom of the valve.
Rotate the tube with respect to the handle side of the valve so that the “long” side (referring to the angle cut on the
process end) opposes the process gas ow. See installation instructions in the manual.
If the probe is more than about 2 feet long, you will have to remove the rectangular access plate at the top of the cell
oven, close the valve and remove the handle. Then follow the probe installation instructions in the manual.
After the probe has been installed.
Check that all removed parts have been re-installed and all ttings should be checked for tightness. You can continue
with the startup.
First, make sure the main sample inlet and sample return valves in the cell oven are closed.
