Legrand HUSM8SS Universal Switch Interface Module is a device used to connect conventional, non-dataline switches to a Lighting Integrator panel fitted with an Automation Card. DESCRIPTION
Introduction
The Universal Switch Interface Module (USM) is used to connect conventional,
non-dataline switches to a Lighting Integrator panel fitted with an Automation Card.
The USM emulates a dataline switch, allowing any standard switch or other dry
contact closure device to control relays in an LI network.
Any standard 2- or 3-wire switch may be wired to each of eight inputs of the
HUSM8SS (USM). The USM converts conventional switch open/close conditions to
digital signals and transmits them over twisted pair wiring to the Automation Card
for processing. Each input terminal on the USM operates just like the button of a
Dataline Switch. Each input can be smartwired to control any relay, group of relays
or channel in any panel on the LI panel network. Smartwiring is a Wattstopper
innovation that simplifies wiring and programming by using a short sequence
of simple push button presses at the panel, the Network Clock (HCLK8SS),
Automation Appliance (AA-BASE) or WinControl software, to assign a switch to a
relay or group of relays.

OPERATION
In a Lighting Integrator panel system, relays with their associated lighting loads may be “smartwired”— or grouped for common control
— to a channel in the panel. A relay or channel of relays may be controlled by a digital signaling switch such as a Wattstopper Dataline
Switch. A standard switch wired to an input of the USM gives it the same functionality as a Dataline Switch button. A standard switch
wired to one of the USM input terminals can be smartwired to control any relay or relay channel in any panel on the network, or any
channel across the network.
WIRING
Up to 63 dataline devices can be connected to each panel. The USM counts as one dataline device, even though it contains 8 inputs.
Likewise, each Dataline Switch counts as one device, regardless of how many buttons it contains.
Lighting Integrator panel networks are based on LonWorks
®
technology. The network wiring can be connected in any configuration
(daisy chain, star, others).
Up to 12 Lighting Integrator panels can be networked via the Automation Card. A maximum of 1,500 feet of unshielded twisted pair wire
can be used to connect the panel network. Repeaters can be used to increase total wiring distance.
If using repeaters, care must be taken to design the network properly. Call 1-800-852-2778 for application assistance.
For larger networks, up to 500 panels equipped with a Communications Card can be networked and configured using WinControl
software. See the panel specifications for further information and WinControl software documentation for programming and smartwiring
instructions.
NOTE: To ensure good communications, the installer must comply with the dataline wiring specification. Legrand /Wattstopper will not
warrant a system using wiring that does not meet our specifications. To avoid questions, use HDLW4(P) unshielded dual-twisted
pair wire (plenum rated).
When wiring Dataline Switches to a Lighting Integrator panel both twisted pairs are used; one pair for power, and the other pair for
signaling. This type of connection is often refered to as a local dataline, since it only connects Dataline switches or a USM to a single
panel. Up to 63 devices can be connected on a local dataline.
The same HDLW4P wire is also used to network up to 12 panels through their automation cards, but only one twisted pair is used. This
type of connection is referred to as a global dataline. Do not run the dataline wiring in conduit or wiring trays with power wires. Do not
connect the local datalines from two different panels.

INSTALLATION OVERVIEW
The USM is installed at the same time as other
switches connected to the system. A typical Lighting
Integrator panel system installation is as follows:
1. Mount enclosure and rough-in wiring.
2. Install relay interiors and wire to appropriate
circuits, as documented on the Relay Schedule
forms.
3. Connect switches.
Connect Dataline Switches to the Local
Dataline of the nearest relay panel or
accessory box, and smartwire to the
appropriate relays, as indicated on the
Dataline Switch documentation.
Install the USM as instructed below. Record
its number as if it were another 8-button
switch unit.
Connect standard low-voltage switches to the
panels — to channel inputs and to the relay
inputs on panel interiors — as needed.
4. Connect control devices, such as the Network
Clock or BMS Interface Module, and program the
system as indicated on the Clock or BMS forms.

USM INSTALLATION
Step 1: Mount the Universal Switch
Interface Module. The USM snaps onto
the accessory DIN rail in any Lighting
Integrator panel or HACCBOX accessory
enclosure which is near the switches to be
connected.
Step 2: Wire the switch inputs and
status contacts for each terminal.
Input Contacts (red/black/white):
Any 2- or 3-wire maintained or momentary
Status Contacts (yellow/yellow):
Ratings: 1 amp, 24 VAC
Contact = Closed, if any relay in the group
is on (or if a programmed Pattern is “True”)
Contact = Open, if all relays in the group
are off (or if a programmed Pattern is “Not
True”)
Step 3: Connect the USM to the local
dataline. Plug the included cable into the
Dataline Connector at the top of the USM
(Figure 4a), or alternately you can wire to
the terminals at the bottom of the USM
(Figure 4b). Make the panel connections
at the LOCAL DATALINE terminals on the
automation card in any LI panel (Figure
5). The local dataline provides power and
communication signals. On power-up, the
LEDs on the face of the unit turn red briefly,
then off.
Step 4: Smartwire each switch input
to its associated relays or channel.
(Alternatively, the HCLK8SS Network
Clock can be used in Programming
Mode to smartwire the inputs of a USM.
For instructions, see the Network Clock
Installation manual.)
1. Press the Service Pin at the top of
the USM as shown in Figure 6 on
the next page(this is like pressing
the SMARTWIRE tab on a Dataline
Switch). The LED next to the Service
Pin flashes once, then the eight
switch input button LEDs on the unit
begin to flash on/off.
2. Press the switch input button you
want to smartwire. The LED for that
button continues to flash; LEDs for
the other buttons stop flashing. LEDs for the relays currently controlled by that switch
button also begin to flash.
3. Select the relays to be controlled. In the relay panel, press the associated relay control
button to add/delete that relay to/from the group. To smartwire a switch to a Channel,
press the channel button instead of the relay control button.
4. Press the Service Pin again. All LEDs stop flashing. The selected switch input now
controls the selected group of relays.
Step 5: Test the switch inputs. Press the selected switch input button to toggle the relay
group on/off/on. Next, press each relay control button to turn the relay(s) off. The switch input
button LED goes from red (all relays on) to green (mixed group) to off when the last relay in the group is turned off.

Step 5: Test the switch inputs. Press the selected switch input button to toggle the relay
group on/off/on. Next, press each relay control button to turn the relay(s) off. The switch input
button LED goes from red (all relays on) to green (mixed group) to off when the last relay in the
group is turned off.
PATTERNS OR SCENES
As on a Dataline Switch, any input of the USM may be configured as a normal
On/ Off Group switch or a Pattern switch. The Patterns Mode allows the selected group of relays
to be forced to a combination of on/off states to provide a lighting “scene.” For more information on
Patterns, refer to the Dataline Switch Installation manual. To program a Pattern either the Group
Switching card, the Network Clock, or the Automation Appliance must be installed. The following
describes programming a pattern via the Group Switching card. (For information on programming
patterns using the Network Clock or Automation Appliance, refer to the respective Installation
manual). Smartwiring a switch input button of the USM in Patterns Mode is similar to that described
in Step 4 previously, with one additional step as noted below:
1. Press the Service Pin.
2. Press the switch input button.
3. Then, press the PATTERNS button on the Group Switching card (Figure 5).
4. Select the relays to be controlled.
This time, pressing the relay control button will toggle the relay’s LED from red to green to
off and back. Select the desired relay state as follows:
LED Red: Relay is IN the group and ON (turns on when the switch is activated)
LED Green: Relay is IN the group but OFF (forced off when the switch is activated)
LED Off: Relay is NOT IN the group
5. Press the Service Pin again.
