Safety Instructions
The instructions and especially the safety information must be read care-
fully prior to assembly, commissioning, operation and maintenance.
All plants and components must be installed in accordance with the applicable
accident prevention rules.
The machine must be shielded correctly in relation to the current Machinery Directive
and as such making it impossible to get in touch with moving parts. The shields may
only be removed by using tools. All shields must be fitted before the machine is put
into operation.
The motor must be properly protected through overload equipment, and the Grain
Pump must be properly fitted with a suitable potential equalization.
For any repair or maintenance, disconnet the power source from the drive motors, and
the safety switch must be locked in the o position.
When the Grain Pump is running, do not put your hands or your fingers into the drive
device or elsewhere.
There must always be shielding of in- and outlet, and there is a required mesh size of
up to 120mm, with a safety distance of min. 850mm.
This must be observed in relation to DS/EN ISO 13857.
Shields such as shaft shields and cover of backstop unit for prevention or elimination
of risks must be maintained on a regular basis.
The machine must be installed in a way that provides good ergonomic conditions for
service on the machine.
The safety equipment that has been removed during repair, cleaning or maintenance,
must be re-established before the plant is put back into service.
All screws, bolts and attachments must be properly tightened.
If the machine is stuck/clogged, the transmission might be overheated.
The Grain Pump must only be put into operation when it is assured that it is not
defective and that there are no people in the machine or silos. The user is obliged to
only operating the plant when it is in perfect condition.
77
SØBY is not liable for damages arising from abuse or technical modifications of the
plant and breach of the instructions given in this user guide.
Ensure that all electrical parts comply with the EMC-Directive.
The Grain Pumpe type SG is constructed in accordance with the 2014/34/EU Direc-
tive (ATEX), and can be used for transportation of the materials listed in this manual.
If the Grain Pump is used for transportation of types of materials, which have chara-
cteristics that cause the material when blending into air immediately can cause an
explosion if ignited, attention should be drawn to the fact that such materials mus t not
contain foreign objects such as steel or stone, which during transportation through
the Grain Pump may cause mechanical sparks, with the risk of ignition of the explosive
atmosphere inside the Grain Pump. This could damage the Grain Pump and in worst
case harm human beings, animals and property.
If the Grain Pump is used for transportation of the above combination of explosive
material and foreign objects, SØBY cannot guarantee the safety of the Grain Pump in
relation to explosion.
If the Grain Pump is placed in areas classified as potentially explosive, specially
approved motor and gearbox must be used for the zone in question. If you have any
questions, please contact SØBY for further information. It must be ensured that the
ambient temperature in the area, where the equipment is installed remains within the
permitted limit values of the equipment -20°C ≤ TA ≤ 4. Therefore, when installing
the unit, it is necessary to consider any external heat sources that may aect the
ambient temperature in the area where the equipment is installed.
During any work with the Grain Pump there must be sucient work lighting.
Respiratory masks, safety shoes, hearing protection and other required safety
precautions that may be required by the local workplace assessment should be used
during any work with the machine, where the Grain Pump is installed.
Furthermore, a helmet must be used during installation, service and assembly/
disassembly.
When assembling the machine, heavy lifting might occur. Persons setting up the
machine must read the assembly/user manual first. Suitable lifting equipment must be
used in connection with installation and assembly.
Gloves must be used while handling the machine as there is a risk of sharp edges.
The equipment must not be exposed to larger dust loads (dust layer) than permitted in
EN60079-14.
88
Inappropriate empty running should be avoided.
Personnel not instructed properly must not operate the machine.
The electrical connection to the supplied machines may only be carried out by
specially trained personnel.
99
Use of the machine
The Grain Pump is designed for transport of grain and almost all crops within
agriculture (see material specifications in general references). Transport with materials
beyond the above must not be used for this machine. The Grain Pump is designed as
a closed pipe system.
The machine is driven by an electrical motor combined with a helical bevel gear.
The collection point of the Grain Pump is located in the bottom horizontal tube with an
inlet, where the grain comes in. The Grain Pump can replace up to several traditional
machines, which in many cases simplifies and saves in design, assembly, installation,
electrical control, energy consumption, operation and maintenance.
As an option, dierent end outlets and rotation sensor for monitoring chain break
failure can be ordered.
Platforms can be provided to facilitate access to service at the top of the Grain Pump.
If the grain can run uncontrollably to the Grain Pump, install a shutter between the
Grain Pump and the inlet funnel .
The Grain Pump is usually fitted with a conveyor or tip box, and with up to several
discharge points. It is ideal for filling and emptying of flat storage buildings and silos,
and can move grain and other agricultural crops between silos.
When the Grain Pump is in operation it may be possible to get in physical contact with
moving parts if the shields are incorrectly installed.
The complete installation must be observed in accordance with the applicable
regulations in this manual and in accordance with the applicable Machine Directive
2006/42/EC.
The Grain Pump may not be used for tasks beyond the scope of this manual.

When designing a SØBY Grain Pump, there are a number of things to be considered.
1. Silo size and number of silos.
2. Distance between the silos.
3. Clearance height above the silos.
4. Should you re-circulate crops between siloes and over which distance.
5. Should it be possible to extend the Grain Pump in the future.
(i.e. purchase of an extra silo)
6. Total length of the Grain Pump.
7. Total height of the Grain Pump.
8. Transport direction.
9. How should the Grain Pump be fed.
10. How many intermediate outlets are required.
11. How many silo outlets are required.
1111
Calculation of motor size (kW):
The measurements A, B, C, D and E can be seen on the drawing on previous page.
1. Determine the total height (A) of the Grain Pump. (Usually it is the total height of the
silo +1,2 m to intermediate outlet + possible clearance height under intermediate
outlet.
2. Total height (A) x the vertical kW factor shown in the table below. (Example 14,50
m x 0,85 kW = 12,32 kW) This is the kW consumption for the vertical conveying
length.
3. Determine upper(B) and lower (C) or (D) horizontal conveying length. (The length
with grain, in the horizontal tubes) (In this case (D) has been chosen)
4. (B) + (D) x the kW factor (0,19 kW) in the table below. (Example (25 + 13,5) m x 0,19
kW = 7,31 kW) This is the consumption for the horizontal conveying length.
5. Add the vertical (A) kW consumption and the horizontal kW consumption (B) + (D) .
(Example 12,32 kW + 7,31 kW = 19,63 kW)
This is the total kW consumption for this Grain Pump system, chose next size of motor.
In this case 1 pcs. 22kW
Calculation table for gear motor size:
Vertical conveying length: A x 0,85 kW = kW
Upper horizontal conveying length: B x 0,19 kW = kW
Lower horizontal conveying length: C or D x 0,19 kW = kW
Total kW consumption: = kW
