FAIRBANKS MORSE
"TRAIN-MASTER"
Rev. C
This Lionel “Train-Master" Diesel Engine is a replica of the Fairbanks Morse 2600 horse power “Train-
Master"Engine, used by several famous American railroads for both freight and passenger service.
Your Lionel model of this engine is designed for “O” track but its appearance will be improved even more by
the use of the wide “072” curves. Although this engine will clear the “027” track curves it will interfere with the
“027” track switches’ and for this reason cannot be used with “027” track layouts that have “027” switches.
The engine is powered by dual A.C. Pullmor® motors which enable it to pull as many as 24 cars along a
straight section of track. On regular “O” curves the number of cars should be limited to about half that number
to avoid derailment. The operating voltage of this engine is from 9 to 15 volts depending on the train load.
The Fairbanks Morse engine is equipped with “Magne-Traction”. This means the wheels are held onto the rails by mag-
netic attraction, enabling the engine to pull heavier loads and climb steeper grades without slipping on the track. Be car-
ful not to let pins, paper clips, carpet tacks or other small metal objects come into contact with the engine or they will be
attracted to the wheels, gears or axles and interfere with the action of the engine. NOTE: “Magne-Traction is not effective
on aluminum, brass, or other non-magnetic rails.

Both ends of this engine are provided with operating knuckle-type couplers, so that the train can be coupled to the
engine from either end. The engine can be coupled to the train along any straight stretch of track provided that at least
one of the mating couplers is open. The engine couplers are of the “electro-magnetic” type which are opened by the cen-
tral electromagnet of a Remote Control Track Section . To open the coupler, move the engine to the remote control sec-
tion so that the trigger disc of the coupler is directly over the track electromagnet; then press “uncouple” button. The cou-
pler can also be opened while the engine is in motion by pressing the button at the right moment.
If you uncouple the engine from the train while the train is in motion, keep one hand on the voltage control of your trans-
former and be ready to cut down the voltage since the engine will speed up immediately when its train load is released.
Place decal in position shown, one per side.

This engine is illuminated by two 12 volt miniature lamps.(See figure 2). Take
off the engine body by removing the screws at the ends of the engine.
Replacement lamps can be obtained from your local Lionel Authorized Service
Station or the Consumer Service Department. The replacement lamp number
is 161-300.
The engine is stopped, started and reversed by activating the electronic
reversing unit inside the engine. This unit is designed to start the engine in
the Forward direction when power is first applied. The reversing unit is a
solid state device which trips whenever current to the engine is interrupted.
This can be done by triggering the "Direction" control on the transformer, or
by moving the transformer throttle control to the OFF position and then ON
again. The sequence of its operation is Forward, Neutral, Reverse, Neutral,
Forward, Neutral, etc. The device will reset itself automatically to the
“Forward” position if power is interrupted for more than three seconds.
If you want to operate the train in one direction only, you must deactivate
the reversing unit by moving the reversing unit switch to its OFF position.
Make sure the engine is moving in the desired direction, stop it without
operating the “Direction” control (either turn down the power or lift the
engine slightly without losing contact between the wheels and rails), then
move the switch to the “OFF” position. If the reversing unit is deactivated
while it is in the neutral position, your engine will be locked in neutral and
the engine will not run at all.
The life and performance of the engine depend to a considerable extent upon proper care and lubrication of the motor and other
moving parts. Be sure to lubricate your engine according to the lubrication chart in figure 4, before running it for the first time. Put
a small dab of Lionel lubricant at all points marked “L”. Using the point of a pin or a thin wire put a drop of Lionel Oil at points
marked “O”. Lubricate carefully but never to excess. A small amount of oil or lubricant, properly applied, goes a long way. Be
careful not to get any oil or lubricant on the running surfaces of the wheels or on the rails, or your engine will lose traction. Do not
lubricate engine rollers.
The engine’s horn is activated by the horn/whistle button or lever on the transformer, or by the 5906 Sound Activation
Button. (not included). The horn will sound as long as the button/lever is depressed. If the horn doesn’t sound, reverse the
leads to the track. Please make sure that the horn switch located on the underside of the fuel tank is switched to the “ON”
position. (See figure 3).
