Chapter II Basic Structure and Work Principle of Mini Excavators
Section I Overview on Mini excavators
The Mini excavator is composed of a power train, work implements, swing mechanism, control mechanism, drive
system, traveling mechanism and auxiliary equipment, as shown in fig. 1-1. Mounted on the rotary table
full-swing base are the main components of the drive system, swing mechanism and auxiliary devices, which are
referred to as the upper rotary. So, our Mini excavator is divided into work equipment, upper rotary and traveling
mechanism.

Section III Basic structure of Mini excavators mechanical system
1 Power system
The Mini excavator is equipped with single-cylinder air-cooling diesel engine.
2 Drive system
The Mini excavator's drive system transfers the output power from the diesel engine, through the hydraulic system
to the work equipment, swing mechanism and traveling mechanism.
3 Swing mechanism
The Swing mechanism turns the work equipment and upper rotary in left and right directions, to allow excavating
and unloading. The Mini excavator’s swing mechanism fixes the rotary table onto the frame allowing it to swing
without any inclining risk. The machine is equipped with slewing supports and a slewing drive (power of turntable
slewing), known as the swing mechanism.
3.1 Slewing support
The Mini excavator has its rotary table supported with a rolling bearing, allowing the swinging of upper
rotary.
3.2 Rotary drive
The Mini excavator adopts a direct drive system. Namely, the output shaft of the low-speed high-torque
hydraulic motor is mounted with a driving pinion which meshes with the slewing gear ring.
4 Traveling mechanism
The Traveling mechanism supports the complete weight of excavator and drives it to operate.
The Mini excavator has a crawler traveling mechanism similar to other crawlers, with one hydraulic motor driving
one track. This excavator adopts a low-speed high-torque motor. When two hydraulic motors run in the same
direction, this machine goes straight forward; when one motor is engaged and the other is braked, the excavator
steers around the braked track; when the two motors run in reverse, the excavator rotates in situ.
Each part of traveling mechanism is mounted on an integral traveling frame. Pressurized oil from the hydraulic
pump goes through the multi-directional valve in the central swing joint, into the hydraulic traveling motor that
changes the pressure energy into output torque, which then goes to the sprocket to drive the excavator.
The Mini excavators sprockets are integrally casted and able to correctly engage with the track, to achieve a
balanced drive. Sprockets located at the rear of the excavator, shorten the tensioner and reduce track abrasion,
wear and power consumption.
5 Work equipment
The hydraulic excavator can use multiple work implements.
The excavator boom, arm and bucket are articulated with each other, as shown in figure and swing around their
articulated points respectively with the aid of the hydraulic cylinder.
5.1 Boom
As the main component of the excavator, the integrated skewed boom is adopted on to the Mini excavator,
allowing the excavator to dip deeper and to achieve a lower unloading depth.
9
5.2 Bucket
5.2.1 Basic requirements:
1) The longitudinal profile of the bucket allows a variety of materials to be moved with the bucket.
2) Bucket teeth are fitted to increase the linear specific pressure of the bucket onto the material, with
the cutting resistance relatively low, making it easy to cut in and break soil. In addition, the teeth
are resistant to wear and easy to replace.
3) The collected load is easy to unload, shortening the unloading time and increasing the effective
capacity of the bucket.
5.2.2 Structure:
The bucket shape and size of the backhoe are specific to the material being worked. In order to meet
various excavation requirements, one excavator could be equipped with multiple types of buckets, with
the backhoe being the most popular.
The connection between the bucket and hydraulic cylinder is through a linkage mechanism, with the
bucket being directly articulated with the hydraulic cylinder, which drops the rotation angle of the
bucket, but still enables the torque to change greatly.

Chapter III Service Technologies of Mini Excavators
Under normal operating conditions, the Mini excavators hydraulic oil temperature can reaches as high as 85,
and the engine silencer temperature can reach as high as 700. The hydraulic pressure can reach as high as
16-18MPa. So the operator should be properly trained with the appropriate certification, and should be familiar
with the contents of this manual before operation. In addition, maintenance and repair of excavator should be
strictly in line with the regulations in this manual to avoid any accident or damage.
Section I Basic construction knowledge
There are four basic movements: bucket rotation, arm stretching / backing, boom lifting / lowering and turntable
swinging.
In general, pulling/pushing of the hydraulic cylinder and rotation of the hydraulic motor is controlled with a
three-way axial slide valve and the operating speed is controlled by operator.
1.1 Basic requirements on control system
Basic requirements on control system include:
1) The control system should be centralized in the driving area of upper rotary to allow for comfortable
operation of the excavator.
2) Startup and stop should be easy and accessible to the driver.
3) Easily accessible visual operations. In general, the operational force on the handle does not exceed 40
60 N and the handle travel does not exceed 17cm.
4) The control mechanism should minimize the deformation of its lever, as well as the inside clearance and
the idle travel.
5) Ensure the operational performance does not change in temperatures between -4050℃.
Section II Preparation for work
1. Inspection before startup
In order to prolong its service life, check the following before startup:
. Check if there is dirt around or below machine, any loose bolts, any leaked oil and if any part damaged or
worn.
. Check if all switches, lamps and fuse box operate normally.
. Check if the work equipment and hydraulic parts operate work normally.
. Check if all engine oil levels and fuel level are correct.
The above must be checked before every use.
2. Maintenance before startup
Before startup each shift, it is required to grease the work equipment and the slewing bearing.
3. Preheating of machine on cold days
If it is cold, the engine will be difficult to start, or the fuel may be frozen and hydraulic oil may increase its
viscosity. Therefore, selection of fuel is dependent on environmental temperature.
When hydraulic oil is less than 25℃, you must preheat the machine before any work; otherwise the
machine may not respond or react very quickly, leading to possible accident.
18
Therefore it is needed to preheat the machine if it is cold:
. Adjust the manual accelerator so the engine runs at medium speed, and then slowly move the bucket back
and forth for 5min.
Caution: do not operate any other actuators other than the bucket.
. Adjust the manual accelerator so the engine runs at high speed, and then move the boom, the arm and the
bucket 5-10min.
Caution: operations are strictly on the boom, arm and bucket, not on slewing or traveling.
. Each complete action of excavator should be carried out for a few times, thus completing the preheating
process so the machine is then ready to operate.
Section III Operational essentials
1. Traveling
Use the traveling levers.
(1) Straight
Moving the lever forwards or backwards, operates the machine forwards or backwards.
(2) Steering
A. Left turn in situ: backward shift the left lever and forward push the right lever.
b. Right turn in situ: backward shift right lever and forward push the left lever.
c. Left turn with left track as axis: forward move the right lever
d. Right turn with right track as axis: forward move the left lever

2.2 Basic excavation
1. Before excavation, the arm cylinder should be at 90° to the arm, and the bucket 30° to the ground being
excavated. Only in this situation, can each cylinder achieve maximum power.
2. To excavate any soft soil, the bucket should be angled with the soil at 60°, thereby increasing work
efficiency.
2.3 Lower excavation.
Keep the angle between bucket base and the bevel at 30°, and retract the arm to start work.
2.4 Upper excavation
Keep the bucket blade vertical to the ground, and retract the arm to start work.
2.5 Ditching is carried out in seven steps, as shown in figure.
