TheSP4V2OSintroducestheabilitytoloadProgramsandSetupsfromtheKurzweilPC3K,
PC3,andPC3LE.Withinthelimitsmentionedbelow,convertedprogramsandsetupswillsound
thesameontheSP4astheydoonthePC3K,PC3,orPC3LE.(SeeThe“Load(fill)”
Dialogue on page 4forfulldetails.)
Program Conversion Overview
WhenloadingaprogramfromthePC3KorPC3,theprogramwillsoundthesameontheSP4
asidefromthefollowinglimitations.TheSP4has64voicepolyphonyandcannotplayasmany
notesatthesametimecomparedthetothe128voicepolyphonyofthePC3KandPC3.TheSP4
cannotloadsomeeffectsfromthePC3KorPC3iftheyusemorethan10DSPunits.TheSP4does
notloadsamples.IfyouloadaPC3Kprogramthatcontainsusersamples,keyrangesthat
containusersampleswillnotplayproperly.
WhenloadingaprogramfromthePC3LE,theprogramwillsoundthesameontheSP4.When
loadingaprogramfromthePC3LE,theprogram’sarpeggiatorsettingsareloadedtotheSP4.
OnceaPC3LEprogramisloadedtotheSP4,thereisnowaytoenableordisabletheprogram’s
arpeggiatorontheSP4.
Setup Conversion Overview
WhenloadingasetupfromthePC3K,PC3,orPC3LE,thesetupwillsoundthesameontheSP4
asidefromthefollowinglimitations.WhenloadingasetupfromthePC3K,PC3,orPC3LE,only
thefirstfourzonescanbeloaded.TheSP4has64voicepolyphonyandcannotplayasmany
notesatthesametimecomparedthetothe128voicepolyphonyofthePC3KandPC3.Also,
setupfeaturesfromthePC3K,PC3,andPC3LEthatdonotexistintheSP4(suchasarpeggiators
andriffs)willnotbeavailable.Thesoundofconvertedsetupswillalsodependonthesoundof
convertedprogramsthatyoumustloadtoloadasetup.

The Save Button
TheSavebuttonisusedtosaveeditedprogramsandsetupstotheProgrammodeorSetup
modeUserbank(seetheSP4Musician’sGuidefordetails).NewintheV2OSistheabilityto
deletesingleUserbankprogramsandsetupsbyusingtheSavebutton.
TodeleteaUserbankprogramorsetup,firstselecttheprogramorsetupthatyouwishtodelete
intheUserbankofProgrammodeorSetupmode.Next,presstheSavebutton,thenpressthe
Chan/Paramupbuttontwice.Thedisplaywillread“Deletexxx?”(xxxwillbetheIDnumberof
theprogramorsetupbeingdeleted).Tofinish,presstheNextbuttonbelowthedisplayandthe
programorsetupwillbedeleted.ThedisplaywillshowtheIDnumberoftheprogramorsetup
thatwasdeletedfollowedby“Empty”.
DeletingUserbankprogramsandsetupsisusefulincombinationwiththenew“Load(fill)”
dialogue(seeThe“Load(fill)”Dialogue on page 4fordetails.)Forexample,youcoulddelete
certainUserbankprogramsandsetupsthatyounolongerusebyusingtheSavebutton,then
usethe“Load(fill)”dialoguetoloadpreviouslysavedUserbankprogramsandsetupsintothe
EmptyUserbankIDs.
Group Favorites
Using The Group Select Buttons
InProgrammodeandSetupmode,youcanbrowsethroughgroupsofeightprogramsoreight
setupsbyfirstselectingaBankwiththeBankselectbutton,thenselectingoneoftheGroup
Selectbuttons(thesebuttonsarelocatedtotherightofthedisplay).Afterselectingagroupwith
oneoftheGroupSelectbuttons,oneoftheeightprogramsorsetupsinthegroupcanbe
selectedbypressingoneoftheeightSoundSelectbuttons(locatedtotherightofthedisplay,
belowtheGroupSelectbuttons).InProgrammode,theeightprogramsineachgroupmatchthe
instrumenttypeofthegroupname(Piano,String,Synth,etc.)InSetupmode,theeightsetupsin
eachgroupdonotalwaysmatchtheinstrumenttypeofthegroupname,buttheGroupSelect
buttonscanstillbeusedtobrowsethroughgroupsofeightsetups.

programsandsetupsintheSP4.
Setting Group Favorites
InProgrammodeandSetupmode,youcansetoneoftheeightprogramsorsetupsineach
groupasafavoriteprogramorsetup.Afavoriteprogramorsetupistheprogramorsetupthat
isautomaticallyselectedwhenagroupisselectedusingoneoftheGroupSelectbuttons.For
example,inProgrammodeyoucouldsettheprogram“10ClassicWurlyasafavoriteprogram
thatwillautomaticallybeselectedwhenyoupresstheE.PianoGroupSelectbuttoninBank1.
Tosetafavoriteprogramorsetupforthecurrentlyselectedgroup,firstpressoneoftheeight
SoundSelectbuttons(totherightofthedisplay)tochoosethefavoriteprogramorsetupfor
thatgroup.NextpresstheGlobalmodeFunctionbuttontoenterGlobalmode,thenpressthe
ProgrammodeFunctionbuttonorSetupmodeFunctionbuttontoreturntoProgrammodeor
Setupmode.FavoriteprogramsandsetupsareautomaticallystoredwhenexitingGlobalmode.
AfterexitingGlobalmode,favoriteprogramsandsetupswillberememberedbytheSP4evenif
itispoweredoff.

The Zone Specific Parameters
Aux Send Level
TheAuxSendLevelparameterdeterminesthesendlevelfortheauxiliaryeffectsofthe
currentlyselectedZone.Youcanselectanylevelfrom0to127.PressingbothValuebuttons
simultaneouslywillsetthisparameterto20.
NewintheV2OS,youcannowsettheAuxSendLevelparameterto1.Asettingof1setsthe
AuxSendLeveltousethevalueoriginallyusedbytheprograminProgrammode.Thisisa
convenientwaytosetagoodAuxSendLevelifyouareunsureofwhatleveltoset.

Global Mode
Global Mode Stored Parameters
Globalmodecontainsparametersthatallowyoutocustomizetheoverallperformanceand
MIDIsettingsoftheSP4(seeChapter9inTheSP4Musician’sGuidefordetailsoneachGlobalmode
parameter).SomeGlobalmodeparameters(suchastuning)areresettoadefaultsettingeach
timetheSP4isturnedon.ForotherGlobalmodeparameters,theSP4remembersthesettingyou
chooseandstoresyoursettingsintheSP4.TostoresettingsforGlobalmodeparameters,you
mustexitGlobalmodebypressingoneoftheProgram,Setup,orEditSetupFunctionbuttons.
GlobalmodesettingsaresavedwhenexitingGlobalmode.StoredGlobalmodesettingswillbe
usedbytheSP4thenexttimetheSP4ispoweredon.

The “Load (overwrite)” Dialogue
The“Load(overwrite)”dialogueisnewintheV2OS,andreplacesthe“LoadAll?”dialogue
fromtheV1OS.The“Load(overwrite)”dialoguehasthesamefunctionasthe“LoadAll?”
dialoguefromtheV1OS.
Usethe“Load(overwrite)”dialoguetoloadpreviouslysavedSP4Userbankprogramsand
setupsfroman.SPXfile.The“Load(overwrite)”dialoguedeletesallUserbankprogramsand
setupsintheSP4andreplacesthemwiththeUserbankprogramsandsetupsfromthe.SPXfile
youareloading.FilescanbeloadedtotheSP4fromacomputerviaUSB.
Note:The“Load(overwrite)”dialoguedeletesallUserbankprogramsandsetupsintheSP4.
Beforeusingthe“Load(overwrite)dialogue,makesuretosaveabackupcopyofanyUser
bankprogramsandsetupsintheSP4thatyouwouldliketosaveusingthe“SaveAll”dialogue
(seepage97oftheSP4Musician’sGuidefordetails).
Tobegintheloadingprocess,firstturnontheSP4andyourcomputer,thenconnectaUSBcable
fromtheSP4’srearpanelUSBporttoaUSBportonyourcomputer.Next,with“Load
(overwrite)”selected,presstheNextValuebuttonbelowthedisplay.Atemporarydrivenamed
“SP4”willmountonthecomputerandtheSP4displaywillshow“Putthefiletobeloadedinto
thetemporarydrive”.PressingPreviouswillcanceltheloadoperationandrecallthe“Load
(overwrite)”dialogue.PressingNextwillloadthefileandthedisplaywillshow“Fileloaded”.
IfnofileisintheSP4temporarydriveduringtheload,thedisplaywillshowthemessage
“Nothingloaded”.Ifanerroroccursduringtheloadoperation,thenthedisplaywillshowthe
errormessage“LoadError”.
IftheSP4isnotconnectedtoacomputer,thedisplaywillshowtheerrormessage“Please
connecttheunittothecomputer”.PressingPreviouswillrecallthe“Load(overwrite)”
dialogue—pressingNextwillretrytoconnect.

The“Load(fill)”dialogueallowsyoutoloadpreviouslysavedSP4Userbankprogramsand
setupsfroman.SPXfile.TheSP4canalsoloadsavedprogramsand/orsetupsfromtheKurzweil
PC3K,PC3,andPC3LEfrom.P3K,.PC3,and.PLEfilesrespectively.Beforeloadingaprogram
orsetupfroma.P3K,.PC3,or.PLEfile,readthesectionsbelowfordetailsonproperlysaving
andloadingfilesaswellasdetailsonprogramandsetupconversion.
The“Load(fill)”dialogueonlyloadstounusedIDnumbersintheSP4’sUserbanksanddoes
notdeleteanyexistingprogramsorsetupsintheSP4’sUserbanks.FilescanbeloadedtotheSP4
fromacomputerviaUSB.
Tobegintheloadingprocess,firstturnontheSP4andyourcomputer,thenconnectaUSBcable
fromtheSP4’srearpanelUSBporttoaUSBportonyourcomputer.Next,with“Load(fill)”
selected,presstheNextValuebuttonbelowthedisplay.Atemporarydrivenamed“SP4”will

PC3LE Program Conversion
WhenloadingaprogramfromthePC3LE,theprogramwillsoundthesameontheSP4.When
loadingaprogramfromthePC3LE,theprogram’sarpeggiatorsettingsareloadedtotheSP4.If
theprogramwassavedonthePC3LEwiththearpeggiatorenabled,thenthearpeggiatorwillbe
enabledforthatprogramontheSP4.IftheprogramwassavedonthePC3LEwiththe
arpeggiatordisabled,thenthearpeggiatorwillbedisabledforthatprogramontheSP4.Oncea
PC3LEprogramisloadedtotheSP4,thereisnowaytoenableordisabletheprogram’s
arpeggiatorontheSP4.Programswitharpeggiatorsenabledwillnotbearpeggiatedifusedin
Setupmode.

WhenloadingaprogramfromthePC3LEtotheSP4,anyprogramparametersthatwere
assignedtoknobs1through5onthePC3LE(labeledTimbre,Mod,Envelope,Effect,and
Reverb)willbecontrollableontheSP4.OntheSP4,controleachprogramparameterthatwas
assignedtotheseknobsonthePC3LEbyusingtheSP4’sControlknobandselectingrespectively
the1TimbreLED,the2ModLED,the3EnvelopeLED,the4EffectLED,orthe5ReverbLED.

Tutorial: Save A Setup From The PC3K, PC3, Or PC3LE To Load To The SP4
ToloadasetupfromthePC3K,PC3,orPC3LE,theobjectfilecontainingthesetupmustalso
containtheprogramsusedinthesetup.ThiscanbedoneonthePC3K,PC3,orPC3LEbysaving
thesetupobjectfilewith“dependentobjects”.Inordertosavesetupobjectfilewith“dependent
objects”,thesetup’sfirstfourzonesmustcontainusereditedprograms.Toensurethatsetups
createdonthePC3K,PC3,orPC3LEcanbeloadedbytheSP4,followthesesteps:
1. OnthePC3K,PC3,orPC3LE,presstheExitbuttonuntilyoureachtheProgrammode
mainpage.FromtheProgrammodemainpage,presstheSetupmodebuttontogotothe
Setupmodemainpage(seebelow),thenselecttheSetupthatyouwishtosave.
2. Withthedesiredsetupselected,presstheEditbuttontotheleftofthedisplay.Thiswill
bringyoutotheSetupMode:CH/PROGpagewhereyoucanviewtheprogramselected
forthecurrentzoneintheProgram field(seebelow).

3. IfyouareusingaPC3KorPC3,seestep3(ForPC3K/PC3)below.Ifyouareusinga
PC3LE,seestep3(ForPC3LE)below.
3(ForPC3K/PC3).OntheSetupMode:CH/PROGpage,thenumberofthecurrentzone
canbeviewedinthetoprightcornerofthedisplay.Changethezonethatyouare
currentlyviewingusingtheChan/Layerbuttonstotheleftofthedisplay.Selectzone1
andlookattheProgramfield.IftheprogramIDnumberandnamehaveanasterisk(star
symbol)attheirleft,thenthezoneusesauserprogramandyoucanskiptostep6.Ifthe
zonedoesnotuseauserprogram,youmustedittheprogramandsaveitasauser
program.Todothis,selecttheProgramfieldontheSetupMode:CH/PROGpageandpress
theEditbuttontotheleftofthedisplay.ThisbringsyoutotheEditProg:KEYMAPpagein
theProgramEditorfortheprogramofthecurrentzone.Presstheleftmoresoftbuttonto
findtheSavesoftbutton,thenpresstheSavesoftbutton(seebelow).Thiswillbringyou
totheEditProg:Savepage.Continuetostep4.
3(ForPC3LE).OntheSetupMode:CH/PROGpage,thenumberofthecurrentzonecanbe
viewedinthetoprightcornerofthedisplay.Changethezonethatyouarecurrently
viewingusingtheChan/Zonebuttonstotheleftofthedisplay.Selectzone1andlookat
theProgramfield.IftheprogramIDnumberandnamehaveanasterisk(starsymbol)at
theirleft,thenthezoneusesauserprogramandyoucanskiptostep6.Ifthezonedoes
notuseauserprogram,youmustedittheprogramandsaveitasauserprogram.Todo
this,selecttheProgramfieldontheSetupMode:CH/PROGpageandpresstheEditbutton
totheleftofthedisplay.ThisbringsyoutotheEditProg:PARAMETERSpageinthe
ProgramEditorfortheprogramofthecurrentzone.PresstheSavebuttontotherightof
thedisplay,thiswillbringyoutotheEditProg:Savepage.

4. OntheEditProg:Savepage(seebelow),anunuseduserIDnumberisautomatically
selectedtosavetheprogram.(YoucanchooseadifferentIDnumberifdesired.)Pressthe
SavesoftbuttontosavetheprogramattheselectedIDnumberasausereditedprogram.
Thedisplaywillquicklyshowthemessage“Savesuccessful”,thenyouwillbereturnedto

IftheSP4’sLCDdisplayappearsblankorhardtoreadwhentheunitispoweredon,theLCD
contrastmayneedtobeadjusted.ThereisasmallcontrastknobfortheLCDdisplayonthefront
paneloftheSP4,abovetheChan/Parambuttons.Thecontrastknobisnotlabeled.Slowlyturn
thecontrastknobuntiltheLCDbecomesreadable.ThecontrastknobissensitiveandtheLCD
mayonlybereadablewiththecontrastknobsetwithinacertainrange.
