Information for Canadian Users
The Industry Canada label identifies certified equipment. This
certification means that the equipment meets certain
telecommunications network protective, operation, and safety
requirements. The Industry Canada does not guarantee that the
equipment will operate to a user's satisfaction.
Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that it is
permissible to be connected to the facilities of the local
telecommunications company. The equipment must also be
installed using an acceptable method of connection. In some
cases, the company's inside wiring associated with a single line
individual service may be extended by means of a certified
connector assembly. The customer should be aware that the
compliance with the above conditions may not prevent
degradation of service in some situations.
Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized
Canadian maintenance facility designated by the supplier. Any
repairs or alterations made by the user to this equipment, or
equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications
company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment.
For their own protection, users should ensure that the electrical
ground connections of the power utility, telephone lines, and
internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected
together. This precaution may be particularly important in rural
areas.
Caution
Users should not attempt to make such connections themselves,
but should contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority,
or electrician, as appropriate.
Note
v
This digital apparatus does not exceed the class A limits for radio
noise emissions from digital apparatus set out in the radio
interference regulations of Industry Canada.

2 The Phoneline Ethernet Converter
2.1 General Description
The converter is designed for signal conversion between 1 Mbps
phoneline networking and Ethernet.
The 1 Mbps phoneline networking is a new technology that
provides network connectivity over existing telephone wires
without any impact on the voice service.
The converter is a plug-n-play device requiring no configuration
and is also fully compatible with all network protocols. Moreover,
the rich set of LEDs on the front-panel provides the operating
status of the individual ports and the system.
The converter can use the following types of cables:
Ÿ 10Base-T, Category 3, 4 or 5 UTP for the Ethernet port.
Ÿ Twisted-pair telephone wires for the 1 Mbps Phoneline port.
2.2 Key Features
Ÿ Compliant with 1 Mbps HomePNA specification 1.1
Ÿ Compliant with 10Base-T specifications of the IEEE802.3
standard
Ÿ One 1 Mbps phoneline networking port with two RJ-11
connectors
Ÿ One 10 Mbps Ethernet port
Ÿ Store-and-forward architecture filters fragment & CRC error
3
packets
Ÿ Extensive LED indicators for network diagnostics
Ÿ External power adapter
Ÿ FCC Class A
2.3 The Front Panel
The front panel of the converter is shown below. There are three
LED indicators on the front panel that show the operating status of
the converter.
2.3.1 Power LED
This green indicator is on when power is applied to the converter .
2.3.1.1 Link/Act LEDs
Each port has a Link/Activity LED. Steady green indicates that the
link between the port and the connected device is up and ready.
The LED blinks when the port is transmitting data.
If the port is connected but the Link/Activity LED is off, check the
following:
1. The converter and the connected device’s power are on.
4
2. The port’s cable is firmly seated in its connectors on the
converter and on the connected device.
3. The cable is good and is of the correct type.
4. The connected device, i.e., the network adapter, is
functioning.
2.4 The Rear Panel
The rear panel of the converter is shown below.
2.4.1 Network Connections
The 1 Mbps phoneline networking port has two RJ-11 (smaller)
connectors. To connect the converter to the phoneline network,
connect the IN port to the wall jack and connect a telephone set to
the OUT port.
To connect the converter to the Ethernet network, insert one end
of UTP cable with RJ-45 (bigger) connectors to the LAN port and
the other end to the Ethernet adapter on a computer.
OUT IN LAN PWR
5
2.4.2 Power Connection
To make the power connection, insert the round end of the power
adapter to the PWR receptacle on the converter and the other end
to an electrical outlet.
6
3 Installation
The converter does not require any configuration. You can start
using the converter by simply attaching the cables and applying
power. Please note that the maximum distance between the
converter and a phoneline networking switch is 500 feet (150
meters).
3.1 Desktop Installation
Place the converter on top of a clean, flat surface close to a power
outlet. Connect all the network cables and the power adapter.
Please ensure that:
Ÿ It is accessible and cables can be connected easily.
Ÿ Cabling is away from sources of electrical noise such as
radios, transmitters, broadband amplifiers, power lines and
fluorescent lighting fixtures.
Ÿ Water or moisture must not enter the unit.
Ÿ Airflow around the unit and through the vents in the side of the
case is not restricted (a minimum of one inch clearance is
recommended).
To prolong the operational life of your units:
Ÿ Do not stack the converter more than eight units if
freestanding.
Ÿ Do not place any object on top of the converter.
Ÿ Do not obstruct any vent at the sides of the case.
7
If you wish to wall-mount the converter, the distance between the
mounting holes is 89 mm as shown in the above diagram.
