4 About this product
4.1 Performance description
Marex 3D is a simple and intuitive tool for easy docking at slow
speeds. Its main operating element is a joystick which the
operator can rotate and/or push. Marex 3D converts the
movement of the joystick into movement of the ship by actuating
the available drives in an intelligent way. Marex 3D is suitable
for ships with fixed propellers.
Marex 3D features three operation modes:
In the 3D-mode, the operator uses the joystick to control the
main engines and thrusters. If an optional heading sensor is
connected, the control is able to compensate effects due to

crosswind or current and keep the heading of the ship in a
constant direction as the joystick is moved.
In the thruster mode, the joystick is used to operate the
thrusters only while the main engines are operated via a control
head.
In addition, Marex 3D features a Heading Mode function which
can be switched on by the Heading Mode key at the joystick. The
function is available only if an optional heading sensor is
connected. It allows to hold the bow of the ship automatically in
a constant direction while the joystick is released and in the
Neutral position.
Marex 3D can be operated from up to six joystick stations.
No further operating elements for thrusters are required on the
control station. The joystick combines the operation of bow and
stern thrusters so that all maneuvers can be performed with
more comfort and precision.
A software tool is available to adapt the settings of Marex 3D to
the ship’s requirements. Individual adjustments can be made
for every maneuver. For the protection of electric ON/OFF-
thrusters, it is possible to define that turning maneuvers which
are made when the ship is already in motion are executed by
using the main engines only. Warnings from alternative thruster
controls can be processed.
Trolling is also available in the 3D mode.

2000 bus cable is connected between the 3D Controller and the
heading sensor (NMEA 2000 bus).
In applications with Marex ECS, the 3D Controller is connected
to the STATION bus line between Marex ECS control unit and the
first control head. The connection of joysticks and the heading
sensor is identical to applications with Marex OS III.
The following figures show the system setup with Marex OS III
and Marex ECS.
